(Crazy Idea thread) What'll happen if...
Monte replied to fbh's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here's an article on dual Webers on a VW. It also mentions the UniSyn Carburetor Syncronizer tool. I used something else, but this is the same sort of tool, looks like $25 or so. Monte -

Monte replied to fbh's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've run dualies on VW's before, not a big deal. Run the throttle cable to one carb (master) and run linkage to the other (slave). There's a tool used to balance them, basically you adjust the throttle linkage to the slave carb to open or close the throttle and get a reading on the intake air flow and make them match. There wasn't any balancing piping or anything like that. The carbs were small so the mileage didn't suffer, but you still get more flow and power. Monte -
The thing with Bars Leaks and stuff like it is that it is stopping the leak from the higher pressure side of the leak. Stopping a headgasket leak is trying to stop the leak from the wrong side, the lower pressure side of the leak. The pressure from the combustion chamber is just going to keep blowing the stop leak stuff back into the coolant passage. Good luck whatever you do, Monte

Will my car Overheat without a Thermostat?
Monte replied to LuckyPistol's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No, you're car won't overheat without a thermostat, it'll run cooler then it would with one. So as the others posted, you can take it out to see if it's the problem without worries of the engine overheating because of taking the thermostat out. Monte -
Does the smoke smell sorta sweet? Might be coolant getting in somewhere. Monte

Subaru FSM for '86 shows it near the passenger headlamp. Looks like a lipstick/chapstick thingy, 2 wires. Monte -

What makes compression ratio diff. btwn carb and spfi?
Monte replied to Monte's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh bummer. Monte -
I'm looking at the FSM for the '86 GL wagon and find that the carb compression ratio is different than the spfi. A couple posters told me so, but I also read at a couple different places that they were the same. Now I know for sure that they're different. Anyway, what makes the difference in the 2 engines? Is it just the heads? Displacement, bore and stroke are the same for carb, spfi, mpfi (turbo and non-turbo). I'm thinking of doing a head job on the heads from the '88 donor car then tossing those and the spfi into the '86. Keep the '88 (short)block and rebuild it later. Good thinking, or bad? Monte

If you want an EJ22, why not get a Legacy?
Monte replied to Monte's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So, is this page wrong? It says both at 9.5:1. Any additional power would be better than what it has now. Monte http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/general/1986glwa.html -

Monte replied to Monte's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I guess I should have known the answer I'd get on this board, "it's the car to have", why not get a bit more power for it since it's fairly easy to do. I like mine, but it's a little underpowered. We have the '88 with the spfi that I want to toss in the '86, I just want to verify the compression ratio of the '86. I've heard they're different "for sure", but I've also read that they are the same. Just bought the Subaru FSM's, should be here in the next few days. Monte -
http://aaronsauto.com/ I just Googled it, they have a nice looking web site. Monte

'86 GL Wagon, what's the micro switch on the heater?

Thanks. Later, Monte -
'86 GL Wagon, what's the micro switch on the heater?
Monte replied to Monte's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I couldn't find anything in the harness to hook up to the switch. I asked about it incase I buried the harness connection when I reinstalled the dash. The car doesn't have A/C, so there shouldn't be anything to hook up, right? If there is, it's buried/caught on something and I need to dig around for it. Next time I'll tape and mark wires as I disconnect them. :-\ Monte -

Thanks, Monte -
There's a micro switch on the driver side of the heater, near the throttle pedal, anyone know what it hooks up to? I just pulled the dash and heater because of a mouse nest inside the heater below the heater core, the car was sitting for a few years. Dash and heater are back in the car, but I can't remember if this switch was hooked up to anything and I can't find it in Haynes or Chilton wiring diagrams. 2 wires, white -| connector. Maybe something for A/C, which this car doesn't have. Thanks, Monte

Look at Arlington too, way better commute from that direction. Unless being "in town" is important, not much in the town of Arlington. Monte Bellingham -
or something else with that engine in it? Not trying to stir the pot, but just curious. Is it just a cash issue? I suppose it could be that for some. We have an '86 and an '88 GL wagon. The '86 only has 130k on it. I'm thinking about dropping the spfi system from the '88 onto the '86 engine. Now I'm looking around at the EA82/EJ22 swaps and thinking about doing that at some point. But I'm asking myself, why not just find a good deal on a Legacy wagon and drive that? Maybe it's something like my wife is going through, she bought the '88 new. She's put over 350k on it. We dropped a "japanese import" engine in it a couple years ago, so that engine has less than 200k on it. It developed the TOD shortly after the warranty ran out, but we're still driving it, but never very far from home. Monte
-
Well, I have to ask, are you sure? I've been looking around after you first mentioned this and I can't find anything other than the 2 compression ratios for Turbo'd and non-Turbo'd EA82's. I don't have a manual, I guess I could go to Schuck's. Edit: I found this page, it shows that the carbie and spfi have the same CR http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/general/1986glwa.html I'm assuming that the '88 spfi has a 9.5:1 CR too. Monte

Are you talking about this: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42069 Thanks, Monte
-
Oh, that's a little bit of information I've never heard. Well, I guess there's always rebuilding the motor in the donor car and putting everything in the other one. The engine in the donor is a "Japanese engine", should only have less than 130k on it. Thanks. Monte
-
Thanks, this is just what I'm looking for. I've got an '88 donar car and an '86 carbie with 130k on it. Monte

Hi, new to the group. I've gotten some good info from here now and then, never posted. Anyways, we have a couple GL Wagons, an '86 and an '88. The '88 is fuel injected, the body/drivetrain has over 350k on it. The '86 only has 130k, but is carburated. Can I transplant the fuel injection system from the '88 engine to the '86 engine? What are the major parts that need to get transplanted that might not be obvious from just looking under the hood? Thanks, Monte
