  1. Is rod knock a "cureable" disease... how/what involved? How to diagnose on a stand?
  2. Absolutely no idea, that is why I posted... I am not real engine savvy...
  3. A HUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEE thanks to Subi81 (aka Cody). Thanks to him, a couple of my buddies, a harbor freight hoist, a few incidents that will make great stories, we ended up getting it pulled and back to my garage (we dismantled in my work parking lot) Wrecker was supposed to pick up at 2pm but they had to push me back to 9:30pm tonight... Thanks again to Cody... between him and 'sko this week I have really seen firsthand the extent of how far our community really reaches; I also saw firsthand that this is a true community. More info when I have time. Thanks to all who have had input and offered there time and advice...
  4. Short version of story- after not starting it for a long time, and starting it for the first time with hood removed, I started it yesterday before beginning to dismantle. Motor sounded "weird". Cannot describe the noise so I videotaped it running. Any ideas, diagnoses? Want to know what I might be in for before I am able to throw it in my ea81 wagon. Thanks. 92 ej22t, aw4, 161k http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=1165809&fr=yvmtf You can kind of here it in different ways, but I think around 55 seconds there is a good example, as well as right towards the end.
  5. No JY it is at my place of employment, hence the need for it to be gone today. Check your PM for details. Thanks.
  6. Have the harness almost pulled (had to stop because of rain-- figures first rain storm in three years is the one weekend that I have a HARD deadline), but I cannot get to the harness behind the hvac box... I tried to pull the box but it isn't budging... took all nuts/bolts off that I saw, but still nothing... Any advice/tips/tricks to get this last part of the harness? Thanks.
  7. Hope to use it myself if I actually get everything pulled; but may also end up selling if the time constraints catch up to me. Big thing right now is just getting it pulled...
  8. Anyone near Ventura County want to help me out tomorrow/Saturday pull an ej22t, harness, etc? I'll start early and then watch Notre Dame at 1pm? I know, I know, I've heard enuff about the Irish, keep it to yourselves.. If anyone can lend assistance, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
  9. I have browsed the USRM considerably and have not seen this addressed... maybe it is under my nose and I am missing it, but nothing I saw addresses a new gen (ie Legacy) awd 5mt swap into an ea81 (or ea82 for that matter).
  10. Just thinking ahead here for way down the road, but I like to have time to read and plan. Si I was wondering what things need to be accounted for in swapping in a 5mt into an ea81... what axles would have to be used? DOJ cups swapped? Any ideas on a crossmember... try and reuse the 5mt x-member as the base, and modify as needed, or...? Transmission tunnel have to me massaged at all? Other things to consider? Any good links, pics, details are appreciated. I am visual by nature, so pics help, but so do descriptions. Thanks.
  11. Well I am in the midst of parting my 92 SS. On Saturday a guy came and grabbed some parts off the front end. It started on Saturday during the time he was here, but I did not start it when he left. Went to pull more parts yesterday. When I was done went to start it to move it, and now it doesnt start. Battery is fine. When I turn the key I hear a very slight sound (click?) inside the cab, but it doesnt sound like it is even close to trying to start. I also notice some noise coming from near the abs stuff in the psgr front engine compartment area when the key is turned as well. Only thing I can guess is something got disconnected between Saturday and yesterday. I was trying to removed the shifter asembly to get to the carpet and wiring underneath, so I am wondering if it has to do with the automatic shifter. I believe I have the shifter back the way it is supposed to be, but it made no difference. Any ideas/suggestions? I really need to move the car from where I have been storing it at work. My boss wants it gone (funny how a stripped vehicle isn't really desired). Thanks, I appreciate it.
  12. Sounding good... one last thing. I saw before someone mentioned possibly needing something for the lower steering column for this swap? Anyone know about that? Thanks again.
  13. I just picked up a perfectly running 99 Outback. It has 128k on the clock. I am unsure if the Original Owner ever replaced the headgasket. However, coolant is perfect, no sludge or color in the reservoir, and oil is clear. What advice would you give in regards to this engine. Should I bite the bullet and replace the headgaskets? Should I still have a machine shop check the heads? Aside from the machine shop checking the heads, and using the new OE head gaskets, I should be good, right? Thanks for the insight.
  14. I have searched and come up empty; nothing really definitive... what exactly do I need to convert my non-ps ea81 to ps. Thanks in advance.
  15. So, following this logic, one would not be able to run stock ea81 rims then after this upgrade?
  16. Again, thank you for the great info, and for treating a noob with kindness. Hopefully I can check it out tomorrow and get my tranny!
  17. Can I get a second opinion on these... after looking at them, to me it appears the third pic down shows the vac on the top with the cable going to the rear. Correct me if I am wrong. While I am at it, can anyone provide pics of what a 4spd d/r 4wd, 5spd d/r ft4wd, pushbutton 4wd, and ft4wd with diff lock looks like outside of the car? I think I am going to buy one of these trannies, but I need to know what I am looking at when I go to the shop. The guy says he believes they are supposed to be for 79-87 subarus. But they are brand new, and I am guessing I will be able to pick one up for $200. However, I need to make sure I know what I am grabbing, and don't pick up a tranny that isn't an improvement over my puny d/r 4spd. Thanks.
  18. Gloyale, thanks for all of the information. Are the shift solenoids specific to this trans? Right now I have a d/r 4spd. Also, the pushbutton 4wd shifter for the center diff lock sounds like a pretty trick solution, and help maintain a stock lock.
