Can anyone ID this tranny?
cyberbackpacker replied to cyberbackpacker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So if I were to pickup the ft4wd with the diff lock, I need to find a 3.70 rear diff, correct? Thanks again. -
I think I have to buy it...

Can anyone ID this tranny?
cyberbackpacker replied to cyberbackpacker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here is my dilemma: I had planned on putting in a full ej driveline into my ea81, but there is a guy local to me that listed 5 trannies, which he says are brand new,for sale. His lease is not being renewed so he is blowing them out. He says that he has single range and dual range trannies. If I go check them out, is there any way to identify the tranny. Can I count the splines for the axles to determine if it is a n/a or turbo tranny? -
I was told this is an older (ea81-ea82) transmission. Can anyone identify it for me: Thanks. Edit: added extra pics

Thanks for the headsup on that, but was hoping someone that provided the xt6/wrx crossmember info could chime in. I am more inline for using as much of the lego principle as possible, before resorting to busting out steel and a welder. I trust myself for small jobs (rad supports, exhaust, etc), but not necessarily to fab up such an integral thing as a tranny crossmember.... that could be bad juju if my welds aren't up to snuff. So, bump for people running the xt6/wrx x-members.

I have been pouring over the ea2ej.pdf file getting ready to throw in an ej22t. I am looking for someone who has thrown in the ej 5mt tranny to elaborate a little more on the process than is mentioned in the pdf file. Namely, do I have to alter linkages, shifter, etc? I know it states I need the front/rear xt6, and middle wrx crossmember pieces. Is that it? Anyone have pics of theirs installed? And yes I searched, but got very few returns for "awd", and nothing for "ej*". And I poured throw posts back to '02 about trannies in ea81's, but could not find specifically what I was looking for. Thanks.

Well I hope to have the motor in by July 1, with the wiring to follow afterwards. However I am most likely going to swap in a different tranny at the same time, and swap in a steering rack with power steering too. I am also hoping to keep the A/C. So... I will have to see. But July 1 is the goal to have it actually all bolted in. I will be glad to share whatever I can, and I am sure will be asking many more questions before this is over.

Well I have a little wagon that is going to get a lightly modded ej22t in it with hopefully awd if I can find a 5mt to mate to it. I am stoked for this project.

I have read the ea2ej pdf a good dozen times so far, but was wondering if anyone has put in an ej22t (or ej20t) into an ea81? I know suberdave has done it on an ea82, but I want to find out any potential hiccups/things to look for. I will have the entire donor car, so hopefully this will help. Also, what are your thoughts on running the ej22t without a hood scoop? I was thinking of trying to reroute the chimney so it vents outside of the engine compartment, but do not know how feasible/reasonable that is. While I am at it, will I be able to add power steering to my ea81 using the turbo legacy bits? I have tired multiple searches on adding power-steering, but haven't produced what I am looking for. Thanks in advance.

Just added another subaru to the family... She is a charmer... I cannot wait to start to work on her. Just thought I would share! EDIT: The car is showing the ECS light, so I checked the codes. It is throwing a code 73 (Cali specific). The stove that connects onto the exhaust (where the tube goes on and then into the air cleaner assembly) is missing. Does this sound like a logical possible cause? Anyone have one:) The car has a non-op registration, and for it to pass smog out here for a regular reg, I need to clear this up. Thanks.

Not sure what to do with my wagon
cyberbackpacker replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I need a good dash pad if you part it out -
Some ea81 numbers would be great to have too...

I want to see a better pic of that wagon in the background... I may have found a color I like

What is the distance from the firewall to the radiator support in an SVX? And/or what is the length of the engine from front to back? My '95 Legacy (BD) measures out to 35" from firewall to radiator support for comparison. I have seen quotes stating the eg33 is 6" longer than the ej22, but have also spoken with a guy who put one into an Impreza who said it fit with the radiator, but there was literally no space between the rad and engine components, so he cut out the radiator support between the headlights and welded in box tubing to remount the rad further forward. Just in the information/research phase of a possible eg33 swap and this would be some valuable information. Thanks.

That to me would say look into getting the tranny fixed or replaced... you have done, or had done, some pricey maintenance already (if you paid someone else to do it) and are unlikely to find another car with definitive knowledge that maintenance has been done to it. But as said earlier, if you are getting the itch for a different car, yes this could be a good reason to dump it. If you enjoy it, a tranny really is not that big of a deal. My .02

Any updates on this? BTW in regards to earlier post where you said you were getting the wiring harness from the engine to ecu, is that all that would be needed? To anyone, what if you were trying to swap in the eg33, would you just need the wiring harness from the engine back to the ecu in order to integrate it into the rest of the stock electronics?

This buildup has been well documented over on nasioc. It is a LONG thread, and it has started/ran, but he is still chasing down gremlins. It has been on hold due to his being in school, without direct access to the car.

Re: 1995 Legacy L sedan. Three more days and I will be able to address my new to me L and its maintenance needs, but for now this problem is a bit annoying and hoping you guys can point me in the right direction for the work on the car this weekend. Basically whenever I am in the 70-75mph range I get a vibration that seems to be isolated to the front of the car. It happens while holding steady, accelerating into, or slowing down into that range. 75+ and 70- no vibrations and rides smoothly. I have a Jeep and it is similar in feeling to what they call death wobble-- relating to any number of suspension things- alignment, control arms (bushings), etc. However, this is no Jeep The tires that are on it are 185/70/14's and they are probably at the last quarter of their tread life, so I think these could be the culprit. The 70-75mph only thing though kind of has me a little stumped though, and prevents me from totally committing to my above theory. The suspension is stock with 149k on it, so maybe the bushings do need to be replaced in some areas? Any help in places to start or words of encouragement are appreciated.
