  1. +1 Felpro full set did wonders for my XT6 Wayne
  2. i recently installed a vacuum / boost gage in my XT Turbo and i can now read directly exactly what the Turbo is doing at any given moment. My 86 has the "yellow brick road" in the digi dash that only indicated whether or not there is boost- almost useless really.:-\ i got a really nice FAZE gauge from Advance for 40 bucks and mounted it below and to the side of the ignition switch. Tapped into the brake boost vacuum hose. (i just punched a tiny hole in the side of the hose and cut a diagonal off the end of the plastic gage tubing and forced it thru the side of the vacuum hose.) This has worked great. If you are nervous about tapping the brake boost hose, there are many other places you can tap in on a post-turbo vacuum line. Avoid any metered lines near the throttle body or any of the crankcase vent lines. If you don't get at least 6psi boost, there's a problem. If you're only getting 1 or 2psi, there's a serious problem even though that may be enought to trip the boost light. My yellow brick road trips at about 1-2psi. Wayne
  3. FYI, They fit, look very nice on older Legacy's as an upgrade. Wayne
  4. The ones on the 87.5 and later XT model years had much nicer "spider" type manifold. Came only on the 4 cylinder XT models with the "hot wire" MAF's so you'll need to convert to the "hot wire" injection system including the ECU.
  5. I lied:-\ Went back for the wheel covers for Bryan and sure enough it's a gen 1 wagon. 79' maybe with 4WD. Elwood says the gas tank is gone and the engine is partly dismantled. :-\ Has black checkered interior, if that tells what year it would be. Had to knock down a cherry tree to get to it. The body looks straight and solid. Front grill ornament is crumbling. Has 4 headlights, not 2. Has dual range stick and 4 speed stick. Wayne
  6. I'd be very nervous about that, if they got debris or gasket material in the exhaust pipe it may have jammed the turbine. I'd pull off the outlet hose from the turbocharger and see if you can see/turn the implellor by hand. Should turn very easily. If you can't turn it, don't drive the car or start it till you have the unit checked. A stuck turbine will disintegrate pretty quickly:eek: Wayne
  7. Should be a relay on left side of engine compartment that powers the AC clutch. The one on my old 83 GL wagon would get sticky and not work sometimes. Took the relay apart and was rusty from condensation.:-\ Could also be that the charge is too low so it's triggering the low charge cutout switch to save the compressor. There may be a leak somewhere. Usually the shraeder valves are shot in the fittings where you hook up the charging equipment. I'd replace them before adding charge just in case.
  8. Cool! Working from that was able find a great timeline on a German site: Subaru Model Timeline How about that mini 55' Chevy clone? Did any of those every make it to the US?
  9. There is some magazine review for sale on Ebay about a Subaru "Star". Late 60's included a sports car of some sort. 1100 flat 4. Has anyone seen these? Sounds interesting.
  10. A 1969 360 is up for grabs on Ebay in Mn. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-360-Deluxe-Sedan-Microcar-1969-Subaru-360-Deluxe-Sedan-Microcar-Runs_W0QQitemZ4653044203QQihZ002QQcategoryZ6467QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Runs if you got a few extra parts:brow: Wayne
  11. I hear older Subes go by with that problem all the time. Nuts rust on the manifold studs and some service person pulls stud out with the nut. The nut runs up on the stud and the stud treads in only half way and pulls the threads out. Manifold gasket fails and you get that sharp, "tse, tse, tse" sound from the cylinder where the stud is loose.:-\ All my subes had it at some time. I would have to tap the hole to the next size and use a bolt instead. Wayne
  12. Mr. Elwood said it ran well the last time he tried to start it. But, that was about 10 years ago or so.:-\
  13. The number is hard to make out, but it could be 304-754-3548 as well.:-\
  14. This is the only Sube in the yard. That may be a Datsun 510?? Didn't get a look underneath- lots of poison ivy and sticker bushes around the car. The floorboards are holding on because of what's left of the carpet. Otherwise the car appears sound- don't know about the subframes?? Wayne
  15. Here are some pix: 1974 DL Coupe pix Mr. Elwood want $400 304-764-3648
  16. The difference between turbos and normally aspirated engines is mainly the turbos force more fuel/air mix into the cylinder for a more intense explosion and better performance. The fuel/air mix is also compressed already increasing the effective compression ratio. GL10's have 7.7 to 1 compression without boost, but with boost that effective ratio increases to 9 or 10 to 1 maybe. With the high compression ratio and more intense explosion when firing means that pinging can cause more damage and is more likely to occur. My XT Turbo handbook states that 90 octane is to be used. So i guess i can either run "89 mid premium" and not be a lead foot. To be a lead foot i'll need 91 "premium" to be safe. The SVX 3.3 engine has a 10 to 1 plus ratio and must run on premium. The 3.0 will need it to if the compression ration is higher than 10 to 1. N/A engines are safer to run with slight knock than turbos, but it still adds wear to the engine.
  17. Yes, but it might be a few days. Not sure whether to call it a 2 door sedan, or a coupe. It's the type with 2 headlights, not 4 like the GRS coupe. (Or was the GRS the same body with round fog lights added??) All i know is it's complete and pretty original from what i can tell.
  18. There's a complete 1974 DL 1400 (or 1200) coupe sitting in a junkyard in Shanghai, WV. It's one of those with the Landau roof that's since been torn off. Decal on side say's FWD and it's a 4 spd. Original baby blue paint with fragments of the dark blue landau. Bumper's bent in front and rust around the strut towers, but resorable in my opinion. Old timer that owns the yard says, 'it ran real well last he tried it about 10 years back.
  19. That is so wierd!@!! Saw the SAME BRAT about 2 hours ago on a flatbed going down 51 heading west out of Charles Town, WV. Caught my atten. cause was 1st get Sube. No, now that i think about it, had a cap on it, yellow color. Probably headed for local scrap yard with some other junk on flatbed truck, not a trailer.:-\
  20. Does anyone know of a source for a replacement vacuum advance for a GL10 without paying for the distributor that's attached ??
