Running an intercooler?
Right, unless you have a turbo, an intercooler will do nothing but hurt your performance because of the extra pressure drop of pulling the air through said intercooler. Without a turbo, your intake air is already as cool as it is going to get. Turbos use an intercooler to reject or 'knock out' the heat of compression when they are in boost. Now...with that said...if you are going to add a turbo, then that is a whole different (and much more exciting story!). In that case nasioc's bolt on forced induction forum would probably be helpful.

lbs of pressure in tranny cooler/exchanger
porcupine73 replied to bork's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell there's a few additional things at work here. Let's suppose the engine is off. Now you've got the static liquid head of the coolant in the radiator, and it will be able to leak into the ATF. Also, seemingly strange things happen when you have a small hole with something flowing past. It's like those little taps on the spigots in chemistry labs, where it draws a vacuum in the tap as the water flows past. This sort of thing also happens in compressed air systems. A little pinhole leak actually gets water into the system, because it is drawing in outside air through the pinhole leak. It sounds weird but that's what happens. I forget what this effect is called.

Poncin 6x6 Rare find!
Wow made in France that is cool. I guess that would explain the Citroen engine. Is that a brie warmer on the dash?

05 Outback tranny question
Hi congrats on your soob, wow that is a lot of investment in work right up front, but it should serve you well for some time to come! That soob AT's I have noticed have changed through the years. On some in park it does seem to actually block the front wheels from turning much in park (4EAT phase I, late 90's). On 4EAT phase II, it seems to make one front wheel turn the opposite direction that the other is spun, but doesn't actually block them at all. Park is really a convenience. The parking brake should always be set when parking the vehicle. There are plenty of stories of vehicles rolling away in park. For some years Subaru had a TSB saying the parking brake must be set when parking the vehicle. Otherwise, it is possible your parking pawl is broken or messed up there. Sometimes people like to park on steep inclines or pop it into park before the vehicle stopped completely and those can possibly mess it up.

Identify this thing (was: cargo cover dimensions)
porcupine73 replied to jarl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHm yah where'd you take those, an Ikea showroom? Those clips at the end look like the ones on my '00 OBW, it snaps onto these rings.

2012 Subaru sales suspended
porcupine73 replied to brus brother's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHm that's interesting. There was a previous TSB about this sort of behavior, I believe around the 2000 model year. They said something like the brake pedal may feel strange or something like.

Wawa Gas?
porcupine73 replied to a post in a topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHm that site is interesting. I even found a station that I pass every day in my area, and have bought this particular fuel at previously, but didn't realize it was ethanol free. I'm a little surprised to find them in NY, as I thought NY required ethanol in the fuel and outlawed MTBE, but many of the places I see listed for NY are marinas/boat dealers, so maybe that is how they do it - say it is for marine use.

Oxygen Sensor
porcupine73 replied to shimshim's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe code doesn't necessarily implicate the part. Often it is the part that is faulty, but it can be other things. Since P1nnn is manufacturer specific, you might need to get a glance at the Subaru service manual to see what they say to check. Some people have had trouble with universal/aftermarket sensors in the front position, but since your code was already on before messing with it that probably isn't it.

Exhaust smell
Maybe you have an exhaust leak.

Identify this thing (was: cargo cover dimensions)
porcupine73 replied to jarl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have an '00 Outback wagon and that cover looks pretty much the same. I dont' think the space between the struts changed so much as where/how the cover mounts.

Poncin 6x6 Rare find!
Sounds good. Those brake calipers look interesting. I thought maybe they had something to do with the steering. Does the Poncin have chains to drive all three wheels on each side? Just curious. I didn't notice you're from WNY at first. I wonder if that Poncin might have been made by Recreative Industries or an associated company, being how some of the mechanisms and the wheels look a lot like their Max ATV. They're on Walden Ave just east of the city.

Aftermarket mats?
porcupine73 replied to jarl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubaru offers rubber mat sets, they're actually reasonably priced, $40-50 for a set of 4 depending on vehicle. I think my '00 obw came with a set. They aren't super deeply grooved, but they seem reasonable, unless you're planning to keep goldfish in them. I just use those large black contractor trash bags, then when it is dirty enough, I just take it out carefully and dispose.

porcupine73 replied to GONZO97's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCongratulations on your purchase! What kinds of things have you heard? There really isn't much 'hidden power' in this engine. A good tune up with NGK spark plugs and making sure the knock sensor isn't resulting in retarded timing is the best route. Things such as 'cold air intakes' usually actually result in less power, because the intake is tuned for one, and second it already draws in cool air from the fender, so a CAI with a filter under the hood will actually become a WARM air intake!

Poncin 6x6 Rare find!
^^ Those banana splits vehicles look like the traditional Max. Others such as Argo made similar ATV's, even with 8 wheels.

lbs of pressure in tranny cooler/exchanger
porcupine73 replied to bork's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would not put more than 50 psi on it, even that might be a bit much. Usually if the radiator to in-tank cooler breaches, you end up with coolant in the ATF, which is definitely the worser of the two mixings. The coolant usually ruins the friction materials in the AT pretty fast rendering it useless.

Poncin 6x6 Rare find!
Interesting and nice score! I haven't seen one of those before. Does it have a skid steer transmission? The wheels and controls look a little like on the Max-IV 6-wheel I have. It uses a Borg Warner T-20 skid steer transmission and the controls look a little bit like on the Poncin. You might ask around on http://www.6x6world.com/forums/forum.php to see if anyone has Poncin info.

95 legacy rough idle in gear when stopped
porcupine73 replied to andytheboot's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHm...if it is characteristic..... does anyone think it might have to do with the boxer style of the motor? Most 4 cyls dont 'box' the cylinders like the soob but include a counterbalance shaft. Maybe the way these cylinders box can cause a bit of vibration like that when under little load, such as stopped in drive?

no tail or fog lights. Relay? 99 Imp outback
porcupine73 replied to antonio97b's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHow about if you flip the switch on top of the steering column, do the tail lights come on then? I think there was a note from Subaru that on some vehicles there could be a stray piece of wire inside the bulb socket that could make it short out and blow fuses.

changing trans fluid
porcupine73 replied to bork's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is still mixing, probably mainly as it passes through the torque converter. But it seems to be less mixing than draining the pan and then filling and driving.

95 legacy rough idle in gear when stopped
porcupine73 replied to andytheboot's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid this 'rough idle' start after replacing any axles, or did you replace any axles recently? Sometimes I think engine or transmission mounts can cause things like this too.

changing trans fluid
porcupine73 replied to bork's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou can unhook the line to use less fluid to get a nearly complete change than draining multiple times; that's normally how I do it. It just won't suck fluid from a bucket in the return line. You have to say overfill by a quart, then start and idle until 2 quarts pump out, then shut down and add more fluid a few times.

Leaking coolant need help.
porcupine73 replied to scoobyru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXmmm right I just saw 'leaking coolant' in the title. That engine has a history of developing external coolant dripping (and sometimes oil) leaks at the head gaskets in certain spots.

93 Legacy Wagon L 4WD Differences
porcupine73 replied to Bake's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSorry to hear about the accident! I hope the 19yr old is OK (at least no injuries from the car accident anyway!). One thing that might help is checking the part #'s for some of these parts, i.e. here's one for the front left headlight: http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partlistbymod.php?subcat=Lamps%2C+Front+Left&model=Legacy If part # is same between donor car and yours, should be good. If different it may still fit. Sometimes there is no info for before 1995 though....

changing trans fluid
porcupine73 replied to bork's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt will not 'suck in' the clean fluid out of a bucket though. That return line goes to the pan, not directly to the pump suction. Do not let the level get so low the pump sucks air! For 'cheapy' fluids, look for the bulk gallon jugs such as at Advance Auto or similar places. Usually they will say for applications formerly calling for Dexron III or something like that. I would not use Dexron VI, it is thinner than the good 'ol fluid.
