That said his point about the independent suspension dropping does make for a good argument and a lot of sense. I know that my 1986 4x4 Subaru GL wagon that is stock does incredibly well in the snow. Even being plowed in by the snow plows where it is parked on the street and they just pile it up around the cars. It climbs right over it and out without a complaint.

I agree, more information is always helpful. As I understand it the logs purpose is simply to track head gasket failure. Not details of extent or what happened, it just failed. Keeping it simple to track year, mileage and engine of when it simply failed. Also to keep it from turning into a discussion thread. All the details of each failure would have turned it into a drawn out thread of discussion. I am guessing this is because most ask how often these fail and just want to know when it is going to fail. It is across the board though and just simply hard to tell from vehicle to vehicle.

Head gasket. Ours never over heated, never even got past normal really. Ours was weeping for a while in the typical spot where it starts, drivers side rear corner. I can't recall for how long it was weeping now. Drove it from central Kentucky to Florida and back on a vacation with it weeping. It finally just gave out with a bunch of steam leaking from the spot it was weeping. This was in town so just drove it home, still it never did overheat. Drove it to a local trusted mechanic that has replaced these numerous times and has been running strong ever since. KB

I just saw this today. Are you guys going to do this again or is it possible it will become an annual event? I would enjoy seeing the different makes of these compact 4x4's. I know here in town we have a couple of old Tercels running around. Not too many old Subaru's but I have seen a few. This is the first I have seen of the Sentra 4x4 wagon. Didn't know they made that.

Got your attention. There was a GL wagon for sale on the classifieds, I believe it was an 86 or there abouts. It had a lift with a highly modded tube frame underneath. The running gear was tied into this tube framing and the bumpers as well. I can't find this car in the classifieds. Is it still for sale or does anyone know what came of it? Love that car. Thanks.

The wrecked 87 only has 70,000 miles on it so keeping the motor and MPFI. First I need to inspect all damage from the accident. Bought it that way. I just need to make sure no damage to the frame in the front. Thanks for the input. Lets me know what I need to be thinking about.

Searching for some threads or write ups. Are there any write ups for those that have swapped the 4wd dual range transfer and standard transmission to a 2wd same generation subie? My 86 is eatin up with rust, no saving it at this point as it has spread everywhere. It is great running and driving dual range 4x4. I have an 87 with MPFI automatic 2wd. It is wrecked but not hardly any rust. Was kept in a garage. Toying with the idea of swapping the dual range and standard trans to it. Also any suspension and running gear needed plus maybe grill and fenders etc to repair the accident damage. If you could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Also, level of difficulty of this swap. I know it has been done a lot, just can not find the write ups. Thanks

Just put a new battery on the 86 GL wagon. Adjusted the belts. Broke timing belts and got those put back on few months back. With the recent rash of rust I think the belts may be what is holding it together now. KB

We run Star Brite's StarTron in our boats to keep them happy with the Ethanol blended gas. Has worked wonderful for the marine applications and our marine mechanic is really happy with it. They have it for the autos too. Star Brite makes some quality stuff. Careful as it comes in different strengths. Searched, didn't find much. Is there a thread or discussion on front and rear bumper options for the EA82's? Looking for front protection and winch. Rear like the SJR. I could not find the SJR bumpers on there site as far as pics and options. Thanks for any info. KB

New timing belts on the 86 GL wagon. Broke one last winter and just got around to fixing. Thanks to help from the board, made it a lot simpler.

My 86 GL wagon EA82 has just over 150,000. When I got it several years back it was ticking. I read on here how much they love to rev so I took her up to 4,000 and above regularly. She loves it. The ticking went away and she purrs like she is thoroughly enjoying the high revs. KB

"Put your 22mm socket on a breaker bar, on the pulley nut, and butt it against the battery side of the car. bump the starter, and this will break it loose for you." Man, I love these ideas that are so simple yet I would never think of it. That is most excellent. I will try to pop the covers off. I thought they might but didn't try. I can feel them spinning on the back side with my fingers as I turn the bolts. The three that spin were never tight but all the others took a bit to break them loose. Thanks!

Thanks, I'll check the pulleys out. Whoever put the case on last must have put it on too tight. I got most all the bolts out but the ones on the passenger side. Three of them just spin with the brass fittings spinning with them on the back side. I will have to grind them off I guess. Also, since all the cases are on I have to remove the pulleys to get the case off. Having a hard time getting the big central pulley off. Need something to hold it secure while wrenching on it. I am assuming this is the crankshaft pulley. However, I have a strong arm and socket on it and can turn it with the car in gear. Not a ton of resistance but some. Car ran strong before the belt went. I have removed most all to get to the belts, alternator, A/C already removed. Fans are off but one bolt spins on the housing of one of them and will need to grind it off as well. I see why a lot of guys run with the covers off. But, exposes the belts to the elements more.
