  1. Wow thats crazy. I forgot to mention that this is also on my 96 OBS 2.2. I was going to replace the coil pack but I need to talk to my subie friend first. If I find anything out Ill let ya know. Jon
  2. I have a misfire in cyl 4 again:banghead:. I had it about 3-4 weeks ago and i changed the plugs and wires. It went awwy for a few weeks and last night it started to misfire again. I think I have spark, I checked last time it was happening but Ill check tomarrow too. What should I check, inspect, or look for now? I also has/had an egr problem but I cleaned out all all the tubes and valve with carb cleaner and I havent gotten any egr cels yet, so i think its fixed. I dunno if that will even have any effect on whats going on but I figure I would let ya know. Thanks Jon
  3. I just bought the car about 6 months ago and dont have any service records. I did however swap the brakes for WRX calipers and rotors and they supposedly only had 20k on them so I dont think that they could have rusted like you said but you never know. Ill check out both tomarrow.
  4. Not too sure about the brakes. Latley I have been turing the radio up enough so I dont hear it, b/c the sound bothers me alot! Ill try to remember to check it tomarrow.
  5. My 96 OBS has been making what sounds like a warped rotor noise when the wheel rotates but I had it checked out and my mech. said it was ok. It has gotten louder and Im starting to think its the wheel bearing. I jacked up the front and tried to shake the tire (top to bottom and side to side) but it didnt feel loose at all. What else should I check or is ther any other way to check the wheelbearing? Thanks
  6. Its warm but not "hot" like in my other cars. And today when driving it to school(1 hour away in city/highway driving) it was barely above the the C mark and there was very little warm air. The radiator gets warm on the inlet side but it ice cold on the outlet side. Im confused I was so hopeing that the t-stat would fix everything.
  7. Im going to be doing an engine swap and/or enigne work to one of my subies. The only thing is I dont know what Subie I want to do what to. Let me know what you think of each or what one you like the best. I would do all of them if I had the money :-p 97 OB w/ ej20t- Awesome Sleeper, lots of room and I would add some Legacy GT suspension to lower it. 96 Impreza OB w/ ej20t- Proabibly the quickest and best handling. 92 Loyale w/ ea82t- Old skool sleeper. Would add mods to inc. hp. 92 Loyale w/ ej22- More power w/ super reliable engine. 92 Loyale w/ ej20t- I dont know if its even possible. But I would also need suspension work and 5 lug swap for larger tire selection. Also if I do a swap w/ the OB or OBS then I can put that old engine into a smaller engine car. Like if I swap out the ej25 for a ej20t then I can put the ej25 in the OBS or Loyale.
  8. I finally got around to getting a new thermostat and it still is running "cold" I tersted the old thermostat and it opens in hot water and closes when I take it out. What else should I check?
  9. The engine has been tapping almos constantly for almost 2 years now, it was my dads car and he got sick and it wasnt a major priority, now that I have some time I want to fix it before I leave for Wyotech, so my brother can drive it. Ill try the ATF tomarrow when I do the oil change. And its worthless to look under the engine for oil b/c the whole thing is covered in oil. I plan on doing all the seals, belts and ect... soon. Thanks Jon
  10. I know all about the tapping noise from other threads but I have a specific question... Everyonce in a while the tapping will go away for a random amount of time, anywhere from 10 seconds to and hour or two. But it only goes away for a day or two, then taps constantly for a week or two befor going silent again. Does this sugest any particular item that I need to check/replace 1st or should I just go down the regular list? and the engine has 200k.
  11. I have 104k on my 97 OB and I want to do all the maintenance. This is my list so far... -timing belt -2 head gaskets (they are on there way out) -waterpump -thermostat -2 radaitor hoses -4 front cam(oil) seals -new tensioner adj. Any thing else while its all apart? Thanks Jon
  12. I have a 92 loyale and It always runs "cool." It takes forever to warm up and when it does the temp guage only goes up about 1/4 of the way. Is this normal? I know that the cooler a car runs the better(to a point) but I dont like how it takes forever to warm up. Any ideas? oh, and the car has a newer radiator(1 year old) and no a/c fan. Thanks Jon
  13. Sry to bring up an old thread but I didnt want to start a new one b/c my question is so similar. I have 86 XT seats and want to put them in my 92 loyale. If I read it correctly then I need to swap the rails, right? Is swaping the seat rails hard? thanks, Jon
  14. How would I be able to tell if its a spun bearing? My brother had one is his mr2 but it was REALLY loud. Mine isnt half as loud but now Im worried that it might be a rod bearing.
  15. Im kind of far away, about 6 hours, but I live 50 miles north of the city in Garrison. Its across the river from West Point Military Academy. But maybe we can meet up somewhere possibly, its always nice to meet another subie lover.
  16. Thanks for the info. Ill check it out sometime this week. I also heard some more noises comming from the engine area and I thought it was a losse heat shield but I took the losse shield off and it still makes a rattling noise. After checkingit out a little closer it sounds like its comming from the same side as the tapping vla's. Would a collapsed vla make any kind of a rattling sound or is it something else?
  17. I dont even carry a spare tire. All I carry is some tools and a can of inflate-a-tire stuff.
  18. I bought a 96 impreza about 2 months ago and b4 I bought it the guy had the vla's replaced and when i picked the car up it was still tapping and he said that it shoudl quiet down after 20 or so miles. I quieted downa little but there is still 2-3 vla's that wont quiet down. I tried to get in touch with him but he wont call me back. So im going to replace the vla's myself if tit isnt too hard. I have done all the basic and some hard mechanic stuff(brake swaps, timing belts, filter changes, and a engine swap) I just have never done anything with the inside of an engine and I dont want to mees it up. Should I be able to handle it? Any advice or tips? Thanks Jon
  19. I have a 92 4wd loyale and the rear and possibly the front struts need to be replaced. Whats the best way to go brand wise? I was thinking KYB GR-2's but I cant find any. On the site they say they make them for the rear only but I cant find a store that has them. Are there any other brands I shoudl be looking at?
  20. I have a 96 OBS and a few days ago it started to throw a cel. I checked it out and it was cyl 4 misfire(P0304) and a egr flow(P0400). I replaced the plug and the P0304 went away for 2-3 days and now its back along with a small klunking noise, like something is loose inside the engine. I also know 2-3 of the vla's on the same side dont bleed up and make a tapping noise. I hope its not a spun bearking but any ideas on what the noise might be or how I might go about checking it out further. I also checked the compression and got 180 and 175psi on cyl 4.
