  1. I believe that the FSM or at least the Chilton's manual calls for lubing the cable with a bit of engine oil. I removed mine while the engine was pulled and and return cable/spring as well, cleaned everything up and lubed the cables...slick as butter.
  2. Do you have any pics of what you did for the y-pipe? Does it all fit in there nicely, or did you have to somehow space it down like numbchux write-up says...? I've noticed I'm hitting the transmission crossmember just a bit on my EA82...but it's the heat shield on the catalytic converter, so I'm thinking I might just be able to take a hammer to it...
  3. Hi there,

Just wondering what you did to get the Legacy radiator to fit your GL wagon - I saw you mention it on one of the suby retrofitting posts.

Any pics, perhaps? I'd love to see some. My email is justin.rettenmayer@gmail.com if you are so inclined. Thanks!

  4. I have a '90 Loyale ( I think - might be older) SPFI parts car. I could pull the ECU and fuseable link out of that if you want it. I dunno if it's good, but I'll give it to ya cheap! I'm in Montana tho...not AK. justin.rettenmayer@gmail.com
  5. If you want to make the trip over the mountains to Missoula, I have a 5 spd. DR trans, the flywheel, shifter linkages, and the driveshaft you are looking for in a parts car. Let me know if you're interested.
  6. Glad to hear I don't have the lines backwards...I spend a couple hours yesterday making a bracket to hold the fuel filter, which would have been pointless had I mixed the lines around! The return line on my 86 GL is definitely smaller than the return line on the EJ motor (mine is from a '90 Legacy), so perhaps I should throw a hose clamp on that connection - I have the F.I. grade fuel line clamps turned all the way down and it is still a bit loose on the hardline at the firewall.
  7. D'oh! Thanks... The sizes definitely aren't all the same though...maybe they are on the fuel injected cars, but the lines are different on the carbed GL. They are smaller I.D. than the EJ22 or the fuel injected EA with the 1.8L. Part of my confusion I think is that (i suppose because it's the carbed version) there is no fuel filter under the hood - just a line from the fire wall. And...I noticed on another post that someone said the fuel-in line was on the framerail, so that's what I hooked it up to. Anyone else have any opinions or know any better?
  8. Well...used the search function - several times - but can't find any info. I have an 86 GL that used to be a carbed wagon - the EJ22 is sitting in it's place now, and I'm working on hooking everything up. Where I'm at now is the fuel lines. I think I've sorted out what's what (the fuel-in is low, basically on the framerail, and the return line and EVAP line are just to the right of the brake master cylinder - EVAP is smaller and return line is larger, right?). I discovered the return line and EVAP lines are different sizes on the EJ22 and the EA82 (carbed) - just wondering what others have done to reconcile this difference? Hose clamps? other ideas?
  9. If you want to drive to Missoula, MT - I have a 5-speed DR trans. you can just have. And the flywheel...and the 1.8L carby engine sitting next to it.
  10. I'm going to save everyone else the trouble of yelling at you for not using the search function: USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION! Seriously...spend a few minutes searching the forums, and you'll find more information than you can handle on putting an EJ into an EA body. Where is beaverton? I have an extra dual-range 5 speed sitting in my garage I'm not using, if you want it.
  11. So it sounds like running the stock EA radiator is the way to go then...thanks guys! Just out of curiousity - anyone see any problems with cutting the radiator support to fit the taller radiator? I don't think it'd have to be a cut all the way through even, just a little "trimming".
  12. I have two choices here - reusing the old EA radiator, and trying to make some sort of hose configuration work between the EJ motor and the EA radiator, or I have a brand new radiator that came with the EJ from a 90 Legacy. Had anyone figured out a good way to install the Legacy radiator into the EA82 chassis? The bottom mounts are the same, but the Legacy radiator is about and inch taller than the EA82 radiator. It WILL fit under the hood, just not into the radiator support. Think it's wise to cut up the radiator support in favor installing the Legacy radiator?
  13. Are you worried about the chunk of exhaust pipe you used to couple your radiator hoses together rusting at all?
  14. Well, thanks for the tips. I'd like to find a power steering rack and put it in - just wondered what others have done.
  15. Anyone have any experience putting an EJ into and EA without power steering? I basically just want to know if anyone knows off hand what belt I could use to just drive the alternator? Part numbers?
  16. Ok, that makes sense. I thought I remembered hearing from someone on here EJs need around 10 PSI, but I'm sure I'm wrong about that. The hose barbs on the NAPA #74028 pump mate are the correct size, I take it?
  17. Thanks GD... any reason why this one wouldn't work? http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=BSH&PartNumber=N69404&Description=Fuel+Pump+-+Electric+In-Line+Type
  18. I know what F-series means... I'd imagine that some of the older F-series had pumps NOT mounted in the tank - I read on this forum someplace about using just such a pump. Apparently they are cheaper than replacement pumps for a Subaru, so I thought I'd look into it. Thanks for the opinion. :-\
  19. Does anyone know anything about using the Ford F-series fuel pumps on the EA cars when doing a EJ22 swap? Any specific pump I'm looking for?
  20. So - the carbureted EA82 also has this speed sensor? What function does it serve in the carbureted cars?
  21. Checked the write-up (thanks chux!) but can't figure out what to do with the VSS wire (swapping into a previously carbed 86 GL). In the Legacy, the VSS is located in the gauge cluster - is there a reed switch in the EA82 cluster also?
  22. Thanks - thats sorta what I thought, but the EF made me think perhaps there was somd distinction between the ECU and the MPFI controller and perhaps this was it.
  23. Under the steering column on the 1990 Legacy I've slowly been stripping of parts, there is a gold box I thought at first was the ECU, until I realized the ECU was to the left of it. This box has three black plugs going into it and the letters "EF" printed on the side. What is it? And do I need it for the EJ-EA swap I'm trying to put together?
  24. Ahhh....that stuff makes a bit more sense - thanks!
  25. Is there a list of the "engine control stuff" anywhere? I'm assuming that it's all the wiring on the engine (looks to me like basically those three big connectors on the drivers side of the engine, coming into the engine bay just under the main fuse/relay box. And also a handful of wires coming in from the middle of the firewall (it looks like the cam angle sensor enters there - and some other stuff I've not dissected out yet - anyone know what a "dropping resistor" is and do I need to keep it?). Basically, what needs to be kept beyond the wiring that obviously goes to the engine? Wires to splice into the gauges? How about from the main relay/fuse box? Part of my troubles here are that I don't yet have real good diagrams to go off of (I have a Haynes manual). Numchux's digrams have been real helpful, but I can't tell if they are incomplete or I'm just dumb... Thanks for all your help people.
