Forester Cruise Control
Forgive me if this has already been covered; my '99 Forester's cruise control has always worked perfect and I use it every day. However, today it stopped working altogether! It is subzero here, but has been cold for days.... I had the oil and air filter changed today- would they have bumped something? It's way too cold to mess with it now, but, where would you guys look first? I should also mention the cruise button has not illuminated in five years, not that it matters. John

Outback shuddering
My '99 Forester is doing great, 2.5 and all! My question is for my Friend's green, 2000 Outback (2.5) Recently it has begun to shudder while decelerating and sometimes at a stop; it occasionally feels like it might die but it hasn't so far. She drives it ever day and it has 160 K; two years ago it had both head gaskets replaced and timing belt, but, otherwise it has been near perfect in terms of reliability. Over the last few months she had it's routine maintenance done including spark plugs, and PCV. I have some ideas but hate to "Throw parts at the problem." It is also worth mentioning this is intermittent problem and does not appear while accelerating or at highway speed. Thanks in advance for any pointers. Also, there are no warning lights on gauge cluster and everything else- gas mileage, etc., is normal.

Any suggestions?
john40iowa replied to chadwick35/04's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't know how fast you want one, but, you might try EBay; I found and purchased two matching ones very reasonably priced for my Forester.

Bend a rim back?
john40iowa replied to gijoe985's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs the old commercial went, "There's a lot riding on your tires." Me, I would invest in a good used replacement.

'99 Forester Hazard Lights
john40iowa replied to sallymander's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have a '99 Forester as well; about three years ago it started doing this same behavior, but only when I set the alarm. Disconnecting the battery made no difference for mine, but it might worth a try. Because I am not adept at electrical work and I don't want to pay for repair, I've elected to refrain from setting the alarm which skirts the problem. Once in awhile I try it just to see and low an behold the problem remains. John

Changing Fuel Filter
john40iowa replied to murphsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhen I did the one on my '99 Forester last Spring, what worked for me was: Running the fuel tank to the E, removing the gas cap, and disconnecting the battery; MOREOVER, I placed old rags under the lines in case of spillage, however, very little came out-maybe a tablespoon at most.

location of fuel filter
john40iowa replied to bgambino's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThey say the Filter is now in the Fuel tank- crazy if ya ask me. Anyone know how long these tank filters last?

2010 legacy...lousy review
john40iowa replied to bgambino's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnd yet if one looks up the current month's Consumer Reports magazine, it gives almost unabashed praise to the Legacy- Made me want to get one

cabin air filter question 2000
john40iowa replied to 86subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks for the pointers! My '99 might have been an option, as I don't think it has them and I have had the glove box out for other reasons before. I will check when it warms up enough to do so.

cabin air filter question 2000

Fuel filter, brake fluid
john40iowa replied to murphsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe fuel filter is a small canister with two steal connection tubes, one going in and the other out, located close (at least on my '99) to the right rear corner of windshield washer reservoir. Some say use pliers to twist it loose and off. I say good luck mine was on there like melted glue and it was tearing it apart to remove it, so, I found it easier to simply buy the new OEM rubber lines- in/out, and cut the old ones off. For the next soul that performs this service, I applied petroleum jelly to the ends of the connection lines before installing.

Wiper Transmission Question
john40iowa replied to john40iowa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIndeed I have a complete solid (two piece) unit replacement. I have had the plastic cowling fascia off once before; not much open real estate to work with here. Can I finagle the entire thing in through the opening above the blower motor?

Wiper Transmission Question
Last Winter we had several substantial Ice storms. On one occasion my car ('99 Forester) had a solid ¼ inch of ice on it and ( wearing heavy coat etc.) I accidentally hit the windshield wiper control turning it on! The motor survived, however, the transmission mechanism did not- intolerable play in the wipers. No the blade arms are not loose, that would be too easy. My question is: How does one separate these white plastic connectors- of end to the apparatus, ( I have a solid replacement unit) and then reconnect them? Thank in advance for any pointers! John

Headliner Removal ?
john40iowa replied to john40iowa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks for the advice! Yes it will need a new one, as previous owners let their dogs live in the back. How much insulation is up there? Doesn't sound like much. I might have to sound insulate it as well; no problem since I've already done most of the rest of the car.

Headliner Removal ?
I am considering replacing the existing headliner to my '99 Forester. I understand how to do the obvious- removing plastic fascia, hooks, lights, and visors. My question: 1. Before I call Subaru what is the ballpark for a new OEM Headliner? 2. Do I need more then a headliner - unseen clips etc.,? Or does the Subaru replacement come with everything needed? 3. After removing the soft decorative interior (not black door seals) rubber molding, are they reusable or is it best to order new. 4. The original headliner does not appear to be glued in place, but fastened. Is any adhesive required? Thank is advance for any pointers. John
