  1. or george tesla's liquid ring. its damn expensive but was developed by the germans for tank wheel bushings because bearings were too expensive to blow up on world war ii tanks.
  2. the oil leak on the exhaust is from your oil separator plate most likely. rear mains rarely go bad, it's possible though. Either way, it should slow up with the thicker oil.
  3. that is so it doesn't get broken when tightening it down. sounds like you have a plugged catalytic converter. I had a 98 forester that did this. occasional P0420 and a sort of cyclic bucking, especially under load. the more load or the more I put my foot down, the worse it was. It started out very occasionally, then after a while became more frequent. I pulled the cat off and the "comb" inside was melted and blocking about 3/4 of the flow.
  4. Perhaps, one of the lifters is hanging up and holding one of the exhaust valves open slightly during combustion, eroding the valve seat until compression is gone? Stupid chinese scooters I work on do this all the time as they require 1500 mile valve adjustments and people run them until there is no compression left.
  5. hey fellow texan. We never dyno'd my roommate's car but it was significant. It was definitely worth it. We do a lot of soobs out here in venus lol. If you need any parts or help let me know.
  6. if it was super nasty, your solenoids are sticking. The proper course of action is to replace the trans with another used one because of the varnish has eroded the walls of the valve body. Good used ones can be had for just a few hundred dollars or less, just get one from a wrecked car or JDM. You may be able to get away with a valve body swap but if the friction material in the clutches are affected, it's just a band aid. Drive it around and maybe it will clear up. Subaru recommends a pan drain and fill every 30 to 60k miles.
  7. i did the same for my 97 and it took about a week of driving and it cleared right up. it's like a whole new wagon again.
  8. the computer uses the front 02 sensor to determine fuel mixture and timing maps. Without it, it runs without timing advance and at a conservative known fuel map. replace those o2 sensors. EDIT I was sleepy last night i meant 02 sensor not maf.
  9. Make sure you aren't over full. Drain the pan, add 3 1/2 quarts of atf and a bottle of trans-x and see if that helps.
  10. Do you still have your factory air box? And snorkel in the fender? Any check engine light? It is possible the maf sensor is going, but could be fuel pump or filter related
  11. I live in Texas and I have always had good luck with rotella t 15w-40 in my high mile ej22's. If it gets cold, you may use 10w40 diesel oil. All of them far surpass API specs.
  12. Yep marvel mystery oil and the Italian tune up cleared mine up like magic
  13. When i was in auto tech school, we had a seafoam day and the fire department showed up because there was so much smoke that they thought something was on fire
  14. I found a 170k mile 99 outback engine. got it for $100 I am splitting the block, so I still need those O-rings part numbers.
  15. Best options are a 96-99 single port ej22. from an automatic. bolt in and go. or if you want to do a little converting, you could use a 1990-1995 dual port ej22 and bolt on one of these to the cat http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAINLESS-SS-RACING-MANIFOLD-HEADER-EXHAUST-97-05-SUBARU-IMPREZA-2-5L-RS-EJ25-NA-/190652875222?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c63cc01d6&vxp=mtr Make sure it's from an auto because the manuals don't have an EGR valve. The exhaust is the only difference between 95 and 96. Just swap on your intake so the wiring plugs in.
  16. if you plug in both sets of test connectors (green and black pairs) under the dash, the ecu should cycle both fans with the key in the run position. on. off. on. off.
  17. if it's a TCU code, it could be the duty c solenoid, the clutch pack or the TCU itself is kinda prone to failure. My outback had torque bind and NO codes and a bottle of trans-x made it go away. But my wife's 96 sedan still had it so bad that I had to take out the rear section of the driveshaft.
  18. that would make it a high compression engine and I wouldn't advise it on a 96-98 EJ25D due to the undersized rod bearings. We were talking about me having a spare ej22 block laying around and not having heads for it.
  19. in a stroke of dumb luck, I think I found a 99 outback engine with blown head gaskets for $129. I still need the O-rings so i can split the case and have it's crank polished and put new acl race bearings in it. I will find out sunday.
  20. well if the rear diff isn't hanging right it could cause the vibration if the U-Joint is past it's operational angle. hmmm...
  21. yeah, its another used bottom end, and the junk yards around here are just about clapped out. No good heads that I have found. The motor I just built for my wife's car that went interferance, I used 300k 95 heads. I lapped the valves, replaced the valve seals, and decked the heads. she runs great but pickins are slim if you know what I mean. AND, the last JY 22 that I bought was toast. Seemed to have compression, but it was apparently the lack of oil that had scarred the cylinder walls.... 105k and it was wrecked... LOL...

  23. I know, I am going to split the case and check the crank. If it's junk, I will probobly stuff a 2.2 crank in it, as I have a good 2.2 bottom end laying around im pretty stuck
  24. i live in texas. 2.5's don't fall out of trees around here. I don't want to rebuild it really, but I have exhausted the junk yards of any good engines, and NO outbacks, foresters, 95-99 legacies, or anything else with a 2.5. I have only seen one recent outback lately and the motor was toast. I could stick a phase 1 ej22 in it but I still don't have that kind of bank around.
