  1. Also when doing the auto/manual swap, The auto trans tunnel in the brat is different than manuals. I had to cut a bit to get the shifter to fit, This pic is still in process. I am working on getting a 1-piece driveline and then I'll have more room for the shifter. Another issue is on the 4wd shifter mount. The 3eat has a pushbutton 4wd selector and as such, the mounting plate for the 4wd is non-existent. I thought maybe that all brats had the same mounting hardware but it appears not. Here's the area where the plate should be, I didn't think of taking a pic of the 4wd brat to compare but I will soon. (This is the driver's side tranny tunnel area near the underside of the front of the seat) Random Pic of the jump seats, that are bolted to the bed, so that I can remove them if needed. Here's a nice shot of the brat so far:
  2. Progress has been slow as of late, the Brat still doesn't run, but hopefully soon. I've been doing a little bit to keep myself into this project. The Brat started as a 3eat and I didn't see this (or maybe I did and ignored it,) but these are the supports that need to be replaced when swapping over to a manual trans: I went ahead and used an ea82 power steering coupler when I converted to power steering and it seems to work just fine. I don't like the idea of that rubber boot coupler after having the bolts rip out after blowing an axle and having the axle grease spew over it in my lifted brat. I've been doing a little work on getting the fans hooked up, and while doing that, I am installing the 3rd eye and also a chrome bumper from an 82 wagon. The slim fan I picked up for 20$ on ebay fits GREAT behind the 3rd eye, its real close but it fits. This is what I did as far as reducing the fuel lines between the ej/ea. I think it was about 5.50$ for the parts.
  3. I was going to say... because I thought pooparu just posted this a while back when he did it to his hatch. It confused me til I saw the original post date.
  4. I don't think any of the AWD xt6's had an lsd. If its in the yard and up on blocks, try spinning the rear tires. If both tires turn in the SAME direction = lsd. If they turn in opposite directions = open (non-lsd)
  5. and if you find any, let me know because I need scout parts! Haha!
  6. My 78 International Scout has a switch like this thats on the floor for the high/lo beams. I don't know if there's any in the junkyards over there, or if you can go to the dealership or anything, but it'll give you something to start looking for.
  7. Which year subie are you running? Lifted or no? I don't have pics, or know the thread, but a little more info would be helpful. (totally not trying to be rude.) On my 83 Brat with no lift, for the top hose I just used the standard ej hose cut to fit, and it worked. Then I bent a piece of coat hanger into the shape I needed and then went down to the auto parts place and looked through their hose selection until I found one that was close to the shape and length I needed and cut it a little as well, then put them on. Seems to work fine. Then again, the next guy who posts is going to just post the link you'll need and you'll be golden.
  8. If you're into offroading, then you'd probably be wanting to do the 6 Lug conversion instead, so that you could use the stock axles with bigger/different wheels. Going the 5 lug way is more for upgrading the suspension and brake systems for our older subies.
  9. A lot of times the backing plate gets dirt and water in between them and the control arm and rust together a bit. Take a hammer and GENTLY tap the backing plate where the caliper mounts to the left and then to the right. it will eventually loosen and you can then tap it out (towards you) and it will come off. take some sandpaper or a file and clean the area on the car you are putting them on and they should go back on fairly easy.
  10. I believe he did it by building it into his lift kit. I have been looking into the axle issue as well and have come to the same conclusion. The best I can come up with is that possibly 83 Turbo Coupe are the ONLY ea81 axles that have a 25 spline inner, as far as the outers, I don't know what would work. There have been rumors that ej22T inners work on ea axles but I haven't found anything conclusive. Impreza FWD inners/outers seem to work on FWD ea81 axles, but they are a smaller diameter shaft. It doesn't seem a great option to me when running a 2.2 in our lighter cars, but could possibly work. I have yet to call rockford cv to see on the cost of making some custom axles as my funds have been minimal as of late.
  11. That's weird... It worked before, when I posted.
  12. Which year Brat are we talking about here? Its a lot easier for the gen 2's (82-87). Here's a pic of mine: The Rear is easy on a gen 2 - its the same as the rear disc swap. The front is a little harder, I needed to ream the ea81 control arm out a little for the xt6 balljoint. Then I got some struts from a 1993 impreza (2wd or 4wd - 2wd for a lower stance) and took the tophats from the ea81 struts and put them on the imp struts. And thats about it, you might have to get custom axles made.
  13. I have a set of these I had powdercoated close to the color in the pic, but I think shipping would be killer to iceland.:-\
  14. What did the kit run you? I might want to go this route with my lifted Brat. EDIT: OUCH. Just checked the website and the kit for the samurai is 695$ not including having the adapter made to fit the ea engine. Thats close to an ej swap.
  15. Here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69741 That's the ej22 swap thread. Its the same for the ej20, just make sure that the wiring harness matches the engine. Numbchux does the wiring swaps. When doing the swap, use a 5 speed from an ea82 (85-89 4wd cars) or try to find an rx transmission or use a legacy 5 speed. Have fun.
  16. I've never had that problem. Are you using the right size punch. Its a 3/16" or 6mm I believe. I have more trouble with the axles being rusted to the stub axles myself (Rears)
  17. Nice Brat! Not my color though. I HATE that year yellow, even when painted nice. I have an 81 just like it that I learned to drive in, I ended up thrashing it pretty bad and now its sitting in the yard rotting away. I have another 81 with the ea81 thats black, and I want to do it up nice like this one. And then sell it to someone on the east coast.
  18. Now does anyone know offhand on an ea81 - Whats the difference in mounting an EJ trans as opposed to an ea 5 speed? Is the ej longer, shorter, or wider than the earlier 5 speed?
  19. Sorry for the thread jack, but do xt6 transmission xmembers differ if they are an auto or manual? I have a parts xt6 with an auto and a parts legacy thats a 5 speed and might make for my next swap into something, so can I use the xmember from the xt6 and the ej trans?
  20. What car are you working on putting all this into? For the 5 lug swap, I think its easier to use the xt6 rear brake system, as opposed to legacy/newer stuff. legacy knuckles work fine in the front, but you'll need to do the rear e-brake swap (I can't think of which rear calipers you need as of now) at the same time. The rest of your questions are kind of vehicle specific. Whatcha got?
