  1. Hey Brian, I was looking through the paper today and I didn't see that show listed anymore. I'll have to check online, but at the moment, the show appears to be out. More time for camping though.
  2. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50400 That should be it there, there have been a few posts lately on the swap so try searching as well.
  3. Its an ea81 wagon as designated by the motor thats in it. The ea82 body styles were the 85+ wagons and such. Hatches and Brats were ea81's all the way up to 89. An ej car is any 90+ wagon, etc. All motor designated. And if you're serious, you can swap out xt6 parts and go with a 5lug setup, though its a bit of work.
  4. How about steering extensions for power steering setups? Probably what you posted in post #3? A lower ea82 coupler with a short threaded rod into another coupler? Or something else? I am interested.
  5. Are you gonna be gone by then?
  6. Hey, I just wanted to try and get as many guys together the weekend of the 27th of March. Me and Brian wanted to go wheelin at the moonrocks and possibly catch a show in town as well. Who's up for it?
  7. Its the blue box model. I shoulda figured. I couldn't believe that the alt was worse after putting it in. Ok, Guess I'll be getting another. Thanks guys.
  8. Its an 86 hatch ea81
  9. Yes, its the main to the alt. I unplugged the alternator and tried another fuse and voila, it will run. Now, should I replace the alt again and see what happens? Or is there something in the wiring system that could be bad? I'll get another reman'd alt from napa and try tomorrow. Thanks.
  10. It seems like the wire thats bad is the one white wire that is big - 10guage in the middle of the coltage regulator. Goes into the harness, and I can't tell where it leads. I thought there was an fsm available online in a pdf but I can't find it here. I'll try google next and see if I can find something.
  11. I only have the 79 FSM, but I have a haynes and a chiltons I think. Thats a help.
  12. So my alternator went bad, as the volt guage was jumping and I was getting a pulse in the lights. I bought a remanufactured alt from napa and installed it. After installing the reman alt, Most of my dash guages were on all the time, and the volt guage read low - like 10 volts. I decided to drive to napa and have them test the alternator. I grabbed another alt as a spare just in case, as the napa is about 20 miles from home. On the way there the battery drained and eventually the car died. At that time I swapped the spare alternator in as I knew it came from a working car. When I tried to start the car with another battery and the spare alt, there was nothing. No click, no start, nothing. So I checked the fusible links and sure enough, the middle one (Red) link was burned out. I tried replacing it and it burned another. The fuses in the fuse panel inside don't indicate that the fuses to the battery is bad, so what is wrong? Thanks.
  13. What year ea81 brat? If its a gen 2 (82+) then yeah, the swap is basically the same, I believe you need the wiring to match the engine, but I recall that someone used a 1.8 with the 2.2 harness or vice versa. Otherwise, just read numbchux's writeup and have a go.
  14. Now, on thos particular trans - the FT4wd rx tranny, where do they usually leak oil from? While under the brat the other day, I noticed some gear oil buildup coming from somewhere. It's fresh oil, and it hasn't been run a lot.
  15. Wait. Who are you? Have we met? Wait. You were gone? What? Welcome back, glad things are ok and that you're doing good. Sometimes being away from something for a while isn't SUCH a bad thing. PS: Oh and simce you've been gone, I've ALMOST got my swap done as well.
  16. For whatever reason, that came off really funny. Good job on the swap caboob, don't get unmotivated, it'll get done soon. I am in the same boat.
  17. From what I've heard, its quite a bit harder to swap the rear legacy stuff onto an ea82. I can't say exactly whats different, but it'd be your best bet to try to source some stuff from an xt6. I hope someone chimes in with whats harder, I was wondering myself. Though I coulkd go look at the parts legacy I have as well as my parts xt6 and see, but eh.

So would not that havingit connected have anything to do with it not running? I have a few T connectors that I can splice into other vac lines.
  19. Well thanks. I didn't realize that the later model trans were wider. I read somewhere that the shift linkages were nearly the same, in the gen 1's they were turned 90* or something. So its possible to put a 5 speed in a gen 1 by using the linkages from the gen 1 trans?
  20. That depends on your local smog laws and such, so if you don't need to smog, then delete the cat and run a straight pipe all the way back!
  21. At some point, you'll have to do some custom exhaust work, The EJ cat hits part of the crossmember near the control arms. Numbchux says to cut and splice the 2 exhaust systems together and is covered somewhere in the writeup with pics. Otherwise, it MAY work if you remove the heat shield around the cat, but because its so close to the axle on that side, I don't want the boot to tear. EDIT: Match the exhaust to the ej you used. Depending on the year, and if its single port/dual port, all exhausts 90-94 should intermingle and possibly later models as well, I am unsure of newer models.
  22. You will need a transmission from an 1981 ea81 Brat. Thats the only transmission that'll bolt right up but you'll HAVE to get the tranny crossmember from that one specific year brat. Any ea81 will bolt to that transmission. Everything else is going to take some fabrication skills and all that fun stuff.

A good pic of the clearance of the ej22 in the ea81 chassis: Does anyone know where this hose goes? Passenger side above the window washer resevoir. Goes into the firewall below. Its capped with a screw?? Rear shot of the Brat, The bumper is getting replace with a chrome bumper from the wagon. When replacing bumpers between brats and wagons, note that the actual mounting bracket is longer on the brats and needs to be swapped. One bolt fits between them, but I didn't think it was enough and I want this Brat to be as close to original (Ha!) as I can get.

Also when doing the auto/manual swap, The auto trans tunnel in the brat is different than manuals. I had to cut a bit to get the shifter to fit, This pic is still in process. I am working on getting a 1-piece driveline and then I'll have more room for the shifter. Another issue is on the 4wd shifter mount. The 3eat has a pushbutton 4wd selector and as such, the mounting plate for the 4wd is non-existent. I thought maybe that all brats had the same mounting hardware but it appears not. Here's the area where the plate should be, I didn't think of taking a pic of the 4wd brat to compare but I will soon. (This is the driver's side tranny tunnel area near the underside of the front of the seat) Random Pic of the jump seats, that are bolted to the bed, so that I can remove them if needed. Here's a nice shot of the brat so far:

Progress has been slow as of late, the Brat still doesn't run, but hopefully soon. I've been doing a little bit to keep myself into this project. The Brat started as a 3eat and I didn't see this (or maybe I did and ignored it,) but these are the supports that need to be replaced when swapping over to a manual trans: I went ahead and used an ea82 power steering coupler when I converted to power steering and it seems to work just fine. I don't like the idea of that rubber boot coupler after having the bolts rip out after blowing an axle and having the axle grease spew over it in my lifted brat. I've been doing a little work on getting the fans hooked up, and while doing that, I am installing the 3rd eye and also a chrome bumper from an 82 wagon. The slim fan I picked up for 20$ on ebay fits GREAT behind the 3rd eye, its real close but it fits. This is what I did as far as reducing the fuel lines between the ej/ea. I think it was about 5.50$ for the parts.
