  1. i've always hand tightened the filter and then went an additional half a turn using filter pliers or a filter socket. that's the way it was taught to me and the way i've taught my sons to do it. i thought that was the way to do it. i could be wrong , but i've never had a leaky oil filter. curtis
  2. with sea foam you are "supposed" to put 1/3 in the oil , 1/3 in the gas tank and 1/3 in the pcv hose. however , i've added the entire bottle to just the gas tank before with no issues. also have put the whole bottle down the pcv hose with no problems. curtis
  3. that just totally sucks !!!!!! thieves really pi$$ me off. a man puts his hard work and hard earned dollar into something and some butthole comes along and just steals it. i doubt it'll show up here in south carolina. but i'll take a second look at the jeeps i see just to make sure. send my condolences, that looks like an awesome rig. i truly hate it for your friend. curtis
  4. it was a dang fuse. thats it , a fuse! i feel stupid for even posting about it. i guess people always say to start with the simplest things first. i don't really know why it blew. i actually don't care , just as long as it's fixed! thanks for the suggestions and help. curtis
  5. alright !!! it's about time somebody popped up. all we need is a time and a place. locally where i am (florence) there's no place to legally go wheeling. unless you consider a place we call saudi arabia. it's really a place for atv's and motorcycles. they do allow cars , trucks and jeeps on the big sand hill , in the mud holes and on a very limited amount of trails. i'll try to find some pics of the place and post them if anyone is interested in going there. i've been there several times on atv's. it's fun with them, with a lifted soob , probably not so much. there's busco beach in nc , but i think it's only for atv's also. i'll look into that. any suggestions? there's some trails near my house , but if we get caught on them we'll most likely be in trouble. we used to be able to go wheeling there all the time but the guy who owned it passed away and his daughter who now owns it won't let us on it. although i was out there saturday........ curtis
  6. i guess it's some black tape over the light then. seriously, i'll look into it tomorrow after work and see if i can find the problem. i don't know anything about the airbag system, but i'll try my best to figure it out. hopefully there's some info on it in the haynes manual, or as i call it , the subaru bible. curtis
  7. i hate all of these sensors! new cars have a sensor for everything. i'm surprised they don't have sensors to make sure the sensors are there and working. guess i'll see if the problem corrects itself with some time to dry and then get some stinking sensors if need be. curtis
  8. i hit a few trails with my rig yesterday afternoon. a 97 legacy outback with a four inch lift. at one point i got pretty stuck in a deep mud hole with alot of sitting water in it. i managed to get out of the hole without too much hassle. the problem is i got two "idiot lights" immediately after i got out. one was the ABS light , which went off a few minutes later and hasn't been back on since. that makes sense considering the wheels were completely submerged in water and mud and the sensors probably got wet and caked with mud. what concerns me is that the AIRBAG light also came on and hasn't went out. i even unhooked the battery but the light came on and stayed when i hooked it back up. any ideas of why that light would come on from water. the car didn't take any major jars or hits and i didn't do anything to or with the airbags. thanks for any input. curtis
  9. its a 97 legacy outback. 4 inch home made lift. still has the original ej25. my lift was made using 2x4 sqaure tubing with 1/4 inch wall thicknesses. it drops the struts , front and rear crossmembers , which of course drop the engine , trans and rear differential. i'm running 235/75/15 good year wranglers a/t's. any more questions , just ask i'd love to tell you all you want to know. curtis

  10. wow,it sure is lonely being a Subaru owner in sc. curtis
  11. what does all of that mean? i've never had to do an emmissions test. i'm guessing by your post that your car passed. thank God i live in south carolina where we can straight pipe cars and nobody cares. curtis
  12. how many people from south carolina out there? i am interested in doing a south carolina meet, but i hardly ever see another soob. theres gotta be more then just me. curtis
  13. 1997 Legacy Outback,4" home made lift, stock rims, good year wrangler a/t tires. curtis
  14. my 97 Legacy OBW had a terrible erratic idle about 2 months ago. i checked every hose on that thing. no vacuum leaks. i removed and cleaned the iacv and that fixed it. btw, if you do clean the iacv make sure to replace the gasket with a new one. curtis
  15. i like the looks of that. i've considered painting mine also. i'm stuck between black and white. nice job. looking forward to seeing that push bar. curtis
  16. the alarm system on my 1997 Legacy Outback is set off by other peoples remote keyless entries. when i'm parked in a parking lot or even in my own yard my alarm will go off from other people either locking or unlocking their doors using their rke. does anybody know of a way to change the frequency on these things? i've considered just unhooking the dang thing however it did chase a theif off one time , so i enjoy the piece of mind. any hints or suggestions on how to prevent this? curtis
  17. welcome to the overheating club! got to love that ej25. you didn't mention if your engine is the 2.5 liter . i bet it is. do some research here , lots of info. good luck. curtis
  18. no, there's really no method to that madness. when i was measuring it out it just sounded like a good idea to make it that tall. i'm glad i did, i can just see it over the hood and i like that. curtis
  19. its 2" diameter tubing, really thick walled.i'm pretty sure it was 1/4" wall thickness. i used a pipe bender. the only welds were at the cross bar , the bottom frame and of course where i mounted it. curtis
  20. i removed my t'stat and drove around for 2 days like that before i replaced my head gaskets and it worked.i still was losing coolant internally and had to replace it 3 times but that was no fault of the t'stat. i never considered gutting it. thats a really good idea. curtis
  21. it touches the bumper underneath, but just barely.i used the bumper to make certain it was level. as far as in the front of the vehicle though , no it doesn't touch. i spaced it out about a half inch from the bumper. a much lighter bar might be okay just mounted with the bolts. mines pretty heavy,50pounds maybe.i made it sturdy enough to take some blows without getting bent all up. with the wieght and hieght of mine there was just too much "leverage" up at the top. it swayed back and forth a good bit. it didn't seem functional or safe. i used it today to push a ford ranger and it worked like a charm. no movement from it at all. i'm happy with it. i'm sure there are other ways to mount one and make it fully functional too. this was just the best that i came up with. heck, take a look under the car you may find a much better way. if you do , let me know. i'll cut mine down and reattach it.i'd rather have bolts than weld holding it on. curtis
  22. if your screws hold as much as mine did , good luck. i could grab the guard and move it back and forth. it wasn't even close to being sturdy. however, the newer gens might have better mounting surfaces than mine like you said. i wanted to be sure that mine was sturdy, its something i will be using and didn't want to destroy my car the first time i pulled on my bar. good luck with your project. i know my car has become quite the hobby for me. i have the snorkle kit i want to build on paper and plan on doing it soon. i'm doing everything home made....well, made by me at my job. curtis
  23. i had to make 1/4" wheel spacers. i wouldn't have needed them for the front but i needed them for the rears. you might get away with less , maybe 3/16" . you are absolutely right though , not much room between the back tires and the struts. curtis
  24. heres one pic of the rear. it might help. i am actually running the factory block also. i decided to leave it in while i was adding the blocks in the rear. curtis
  25. they are goodyear wrangler a/t's . picked them up at walmart for $78 a tire. a pretty good deal if they turn out to be okay tires. they did rub at first but, i removed the factory "mudflap" and that solved the problem. the tires were rubbing the screw that holds the flap on. now, it only rubs when turning sharp while backing up. here are a couple of pics of where i mounted the push bar. its hard to see , but you'll get the main idea. i'll post some pics of the rear end as soon as i can. maybe not tonight but tomorrow for sure. curtis
