A flashing check engine light indicates a misfire. The CEL flashes to tell you to back off.

Have you had any body work done where they would've removed the hood? My car had a front suspension clunk, then I noticed it was just my hood hinge bolts that were loose, letting the hood bounce once in a while. The body shop never tightened them.

Here's a tip to pass the PA emission inspection without replacing the cat. That is if you can live with the CEL light on. I've been doing this for a couple of years. Clear the code and drive the car for a couple of days without taking it out on the highway, or doing highway speeds. All the readiness montitors will reset, except the catalylist efficiency montior. The PA emission inspection law allows for two readiness monitiors not to be set. In this case you won't have the catalyst efficiency monitior set, but that's ok because it's only one of the montiors that is not set. Now your CEL will probably come back on as soon as you take it out the the highway, but you've already passed the test.

2000LBS. with a proper hitch. I would install a tranny cooler, it won't cost much and it'll save your tranny.

You know, I'm really getting sick of hearing people complain about this "problem". Every car makes noise when it runs. Every car has a warm up period. Stop worrying about this "problem" and drive the car. Because it's not a problem at all. It won't affect the life of the engine and it gives you better gas mileage. I've seen 2.5L engines with 140K on them, that still had the cylinder honing scuffs on the cylinder wall. Subaru's are built to last for as long as the customer wants to maintain the car. (Sorry had to rant a little.)

You could also try cleaning out the idle air control valve.

Whatever you do, stop letting it overheat! Stop testing it if you know it overheats. You are going to cause a lot of engine damage very quickly. An overheating problem is not something to fool around with.

How many miles are on your '97 Outback? Could it be that the struts are worn out and the car is riding softer then it should, but more to your liking?

There is a metal mesh donut gasket between the cat and mid pipe section. Sounds like your is bad.

190K on Phase 2 2.5L. Just started leaking externally from left HG. The problem with any aluminum engine, is that at some point you might need a HG job. The only Subaru engine that probably had very few HG problems was the EJ22T. And even then, I talked to a tech that had a HG go on one of those. From looking at the sales history of 2.2L HG to 2.5L HG's, we've sold quite a bit more HG for the 2.5L. It's just one of those things. You can go to any message board, for any car company and see tons of problems. Honda's, Toyota's and Nissan included.

Yes, the door edge guard goes along the outside edge of the door. I'm not sure about the XT. There is really no way of looking that up. I'm assuming that it goes around the fender lip. Thank's

How many miles ago did the abnormal wear start?

I wouldn't spend more then $5000 on a '99 Forester with that many miles. That year does have the Phase 2 2.5, which has less HG problems then the Phase 1. But my dads '00 Legacy with the Phase 2 has 190K, and the RF HG has just started leaking. We bought the car with 168K, and I don't know if the HG's went bad before that or not. Any car with that many miles has a chance of blowing a HG.

After installing indiglo gauges, I ran into the sticking speedo issue. I checked with a Suby tech. He said that grease probably got into the speedo head. He recommended spraying a little brake cleaner to clear the grease out. I haven't got around to fixing it yet. Who needs a speedo anyway?

The tranny locks the torque split 50/50 only in first and reverse. As far as I know, not in any other gear. Subaru uses a 90/10 split on autos for better gas mileage more then likely.

When you get it going, does the turbo spool up evenly? What boost level are you running?
