  1. is there any way a guy could put like a holly inline fuel pump in and get rid of the subaru one? i haven't looked under my car to check it out, but its got 260xxx and i dont think its ever been changed, and i think its going out. when i turn the blinkers on, hit the brakes, you hear it bog down or it goes with blinker if that makes sense. i would rather go get a cheap inline pump at a parts store than go get a dirty nasty junkyard one that could go out again and deal with crawling under it in the dirt.
  2. i have the same car, i get 22 to 24 mpg on the high way. i do a lot of hill climbing and its deep into the throttle to maintain 70mph, i dont think your too far off. one fuel filter, i believe they got rid of the second filter with the throttle body. i also have the 3 speed auto, and its 4500 rpms to go 70, thats what kills me!
  3. its an 88 SPFI 1.8L ea2. yes, 4wd wouldn't own it if it wasn't! thanks for the offer Quidam, there is a guy in my area who loves working on these old Subaru's, and the mechanic said he might have one laying around. i will keep your offer in mind if i do need one.
  4. motors been rebuilt about 15 thousand ago(supposedly) and they must not have got the bolts tight enough.
  5. cracked/ broken flex plate. took it to a mechanic friend, he poped the rubber tranny plug out(automatic) craced in many places and missing a chunk in one spot. looks like the trannys comin out!
  6. so when you start it when its cold, there is this nasty loud rattle that comes from the engine. eventually, the rattle goes away when the car warms up. well i was driving it home on the interstate tonight, and the rattle started doing it really really bad and extremely loud at rpms over 3000. what is this? its not really a knock, its a rattle like the exhaust pipe is loose or something but its coming from the motor.
  7. how is it an air leak? ive got a plug in the spot where it used to go into the intake tube, and this is a crank case vent. its for venting the oil system. i have 2 of these in my 454 big block chevy. and yes, there was oil all over in the intake tube. the MAF sensor had oil all over it until i cleaned it.
  8. i plugged the vent in the intake tube, and put a crank case breather filter on where the valve covers breath so my intake isnt sucking anymore oil.
  9. the car has 260xxx on it, but supposedly its got a rebuilt motor in it. it doesn't smoke at all, and at that many miles id assume it would smoke a little if it was an old motor. and it only uses about a quart per oil change. probably leaks just about all of that quart.
  10. All the plug wires look pretty new far as I can see
  11. i have a crank angle sensor/circut code in the ecu
  12. the 02 sensor looks pretty new, and the MAF sensor looked great even before i cleaned it, and i used actual maf sensor cleaner. and i just bought a new Coolant temp sensor.
  13. I dunno what plugs. Just whatever napa gave me in the ngk form. And its got all new vacuum lines and I cleaned the maf sensor
  14. Well ya I know that. Im basically asking how I get it to a more brown color. Its a 88 spfi. Not like I can just go change jetting. Fuel filter is good. Just put a new top throttle body on it with an injector cause mine was shot
  15. So these have probably 1000 miles on them. The car is kinda slugish on the insterstate and has a midrange sort of lag
  16. i dont think its really a "warm air intake" here is what i did. ok i put an adapter on the MAF sensor to put a cone filter on it. than, i built a big heat shield that goes from the shock tower, to past the canister for the fuel tank.i cut a round part in it so that the intake tube fits around it. than, i cut a big hole in my fender so that i could stick the bottom part of the filter on it so its sucking air from the inner fender. after driving it, i can pop the hood and the filter and adapter on the cold side of the shield feel somewhat close to the outside temp. on my 04 duramax, if you touch the filter after driving it, it will practically burn you its so hot. does it feel like i gained a lot of power? no it doesn't. but it definitely didnt make me loose any MPG and i like the louder sound lol.
  17. how does it lower combustion chamber temps when its coming in hot? thats why for my diesel they sell an egr cooler cause the exhaust coming back in is hot?
  18. Removing this will give me 3 mpg? Hard to believe
  19. up hill? it cruses at 70 on flat ground like nothing. maybe 1/8th throttle on flat ground to do 70 75. like i said. im up at 5000 feet, and its all an up hill battle. semis are going like 45 up these hills. the interstate driving from livingston to bozeman montana is far from flat or downhill.
  20. gotta remember this thing has like 70 hp, and im floored. the interstate driving im doing is all up hill, so its floored to to keep 60 to 65.after deleting the cats and the air filter mod, i noticed a good increase in wide open power. maybe the cats were a little plugged i didnt really look. the body has 255 thousand miles on it. motor has been rebuilt about 15 thousand ago so its running good. and are you sure i can get 27 mpg wide open on the interstate with a 3 speed automatic?
  21. hm. after i did all that stuff i went from 20 to 24.5 mpg. and my air filter was new and the cats wernt even plugged.
  22. if r12 is better why do all the new vehicles come stock with the 13? and ive done the convert to the 13 on 3 vehicles now, and havent had one problem. and its all about convenience. going to the parts store and getting the stuff is easy when you just put the 13 in it.
  23. Oh ya im sure the 5 speed is a world of difference but I need this car daily so a 5 speed conversion isn't going to happen for awhile. As for removing things; I would die without air conditioning on the interstate. I ofcourse have to shut it off to climb any sort of hill but I need it:rolleyes: . And I want to keep the car somewhat nice inside so I wont be removing any carpet or seats. I do have 175 tires tnat are completely bald instead of 185s. Not my choice its just what came with it. Any other little things I can do to help? Maybe synthetic oils?
  24. personally, i think you should have converted. all the newer vehicles comes stock with the newer stuff you listed. i bought the"conversion kit" and it consisted of a couple dollar fitting that mounted on the old valve, and one of the 4 oz bottles of oil, and like 1 or 2 bottles of refrigerant. very cheap, and the ac like freezes my arms. i have to adjust the hot cold knob.
  25. oh and might i add its an 88 GL-10 with the SPFI injection. i was having major white plug problems and it would randomly die and not start again, so i went to the junk yard and got an entire new throttle body top that included all the sensors and the injector and it runs much better now.
