It sounds like you may have water in your gas tank and fuel lines. Before the temps drop again, head to your local auto store and get some fuel additive for water removal and top up your tank with some fresh gas.

Just wanted to say that Outback_97 was spot on as to why the belt was replaced, when I had the oil pump seals done at 47k, they replaced the timing belt also due to the oil.

Yeah, my OEM lasted almost 7 years (6 years, 9 months) which I thought was a great life span, car is always outside.

Yes, I believe it is from not letting the car warm up enough, I have noticed this too on my 96GT since new. Does not happen when the engine is warmed up and at it's normal idle speed.

I had this same problem a while back, it turned out that NTB had improperly adjusted the parking brake while I was getting some new tires or a rotation and the brake was dragging.

Not sure if it will make a difference in your decision, but the 05 comes with side curtain airbags, maybe it will save you some money on insurance.

The initial drain and the first flush I took to Pep Boys, the others I just put down the drain as it was mostly water by that time. FYI, I removed no hoses, just filled, burped, drove around to circulate and when cooled, repeated.

Kevin, Yes I finished, but since the hoses looked to be in good shape and I know the t-stat still works, I decided to just drain the radiator. I did about 5 flushes with just distilled water. I used Mobil 1 ATF for the change, bottle said it was compatible with other ATF's. Been a couple of weeks now, no problems.

Recently did an ATF change on my 96 Legacy GT, got 5 quarts out.

Yes, as near as I can tell. After the first year of the 2.5 in 96, the engine was changed in 97, HP and torque were increased and the engine no longer required premium fuel . I own a 96 Legacy GT, have had it since new, have always used 92 or better. If you use fuel with a lower octane rating, you run the risk of engine knock or ping, in which the fuel in the combustion chamber ignites prematurely.

Also remember, that 96 2.5 requires 91 octane fuel.

Yeah, they were all replaced when I had my State Inspection a couple months back. I'm going to pass on the engine drain bolts, think I agree that they could be more trouble than they are worth. Figured on doing a flush or two with distilled water.

Don't know for sure, but I have read a couple of good reasons on the forum. One was to keep dirt and such out of the engine compartment. Another was for better aerodynamics.

Thanks to all the info on this forum, I have just about completed all the 90k services due on my 96 Legacy GT. With the coolant change, I want to replace the hoses (upper and lower) and t-stat (including gasket) since to the best of my knowledge, they are still the original parts. Any other parts I need or should be replaced before I place my order? Thanks in advance.

Look under the dash on the driver's side, there should be a button you need to push to reset the alarm/keyless entry system.

Does anyone know if doing the oil and filter changes yourself voids the Subaru Factory Warranty?
