  1. A Haynes or Chilton manual doesn't exist yet for anything past 99. I know cause I want one too. You can get the Subaru service manual for that year for about $200.
  2. From my research here and yonder it appears that unless you want to spend some serious cash there's not much you can do except possibly a CAI with a K & N type filter. This supposedly will cause you to lose some hp at lower rpms, but increase to top end. I personally have no desire to try it out.
  3. I don't think anyone here can knock Audi for it's smoothness or quattro drivetrain. My friends A4 is definitely smooooooth. I thought this was a VW/Legacy comparison. I think the OB is a better comparison. I don't have a problem cruising at 90 mph on the highway. And the ride is very comfy. Now if those dang Germans could master the electrical side of things.
  4. LOL, that's cause frisbee accidentally posted the same thing twice and at the time I was responding to one of them JT95 was posting on the other. It just so happened they our answers are very similar. The admin combined the two.
  5. 1. Your paying for the raised suspension and a few other options that are not available on the Legacy. If you don't want the rugged appeal then the Legacy is probably for you. 2. Can't speak for the turbo (which I know is hot)or the 3.0. but the 2.5 NA engines have plenty of power to get you around and haul your stuff in the back. The manual makes it a little more snappy. I highly disagree with anyone who says they are underpowered. They are more adequately powered. 3. There have been some problems with the 2.5's in the past, but I think Subaru has worked out a lot of bugs. I wouldn't worry about the engine or drivetrain. The only thing that concerns me is the reliability of the add ons you can get now. The only complaint I have heard lately is the auto climate controls. 4. Yes there have been some issues with clutch judder. I have it with my MY00 OBW. It's got 115,000 on the original clutch so for me it's nothing.
  6. That's not good. You're going to have to face the inevitable and get the head gasket replaced. Do a search for head gaskets.
  7. If your talking external you could probably use the stuff from the external HG recall on 2.5 SOHC engines.
  8. It amazes me the number of people who lack it. (not directed at setright)
  9. Not at all. Even with open diffs you still have at worst case two wheels with traction ability instead of one on a two wheel drive car. The reason some get stuck on the side of the road and some don't means that the conditions were that bad in certain situations. The transfer of power from one wheel to the other means front and back not side to side( with open diff). Subaru's still have a big advantage over other awd designs. AWD does not equal locked differential. Yet locked diffs can't be driven on dry pavement. I agree that LSD would be sweet front and back.
  10. For everyday driving I like to shift between 3-4k rpm in my MY00 OBW. If I'm passing on a 2 lane road I'll shift down and get up to 4.5-5k.
  11. This may sound crazy, but check the hoses up around the top of the case in front of the air box. I had the same scenario lately and discovered that two hoses were disconnected. After I reattached them the smell went away. I might add that the oil smell I had was fresh and hot, not burnt.
  12. I'm surprised to hear others with this problem. I had a sticky situation with the local dealer. I noticed an oil smell after I left the dealer. Come to find out a couple of vent hoses were unattached. I was wondering if they blew off from extra oil pressure. I wound up draining the excessive oil myself. Funny enough I recevied a call from SOA this morning asking about my experience at the dealer. Needless to say the dealer didn't get a high rating. I'll be curious to see if I get a response.
  13. Thanks for the reply. That's an interesting concept. I have a set of NGK's sitting at my auto shop right now. They're waiting for me to bring it in. I'll let you know the outcome. In the meantime I'm getting my tire rebalanced just in case.
  14. What would cause my car to have inconsistant vibrations at higher speeds? If you read my last post you know that I discovered a missing lug nut. After replacing it the car seemed to run like a charm. At least on back roads. Yesterday I took a long highway drive at 70-85 mph and a vibration would develop sporadically. I could go 10 minutes smooth then vibration for a few minutes then it would smooth out again. I would think that a tire out of balance would vibrate all the time. Could I be wrong? I read the other post here about drive line vibration, but his scenario was different.
  15. Thanx for the reply. I wound up getting a friend to pick me up one at the dealer and put it on last night and did a long drive. It made all the difference in the world. After my bad luck in January with the dealer, I finally have my car driving like it should be.
  16. Well I think I discovered why my car feels like the wheels are out of balance sporadically. I'm missing a lug nut on the front passenger side. I need to find a temp one tommorrow until I can order the real thing, but I don't know what size it is. Can someone give me that info? 2000 OBW. Thanx.
  17. My back heats as well. 00 OBW. As for the lights I know you can replace the on for the seat heater switch. There's a post somewhere with the details. The one for the mirror switch can probably be replaced as well if you don't mind tearing the whole door assembly apart. Radio Shack does have the little bulbs according to the related thread.
  18. Do Subarus come with camber adjusters stock or is this an aftermarket add on? Mine in particular is a MY00 OBW.
  19. Sounds like your brake booster may be going bad although I don't know why it's related to temperature. I had a S-10 that had this problem. They had to replace the whole unit.
  20. Like I said I "think" this is normal. Not sure. The reason I say this is because I have been behind a lot of toyotas and a few saturns that do this. I would like the know the definite answer. Have you ever been riding with someone in the car i.e. a female, and you get that smell from the car in front of you, and you hope that she doesn't think it's you, but she has no clue that what the smell is. Well you know what I mean ;<).
