  1. From what I hear the spline count on the clutch and the trans have to match but as long as they match and the flywheel to clutch surfaces are the same size you should be okay. Ea82 and XT6 flywheels are primarily an upgrade due to weight and the newer one has probably been turned less times (as in: machined to smooth it). Shawn

  3. Try turning the left side of the lock that you now have exposed (basing this on the fact that you have the electrical side of the ignition switch pulled out so you can start it).
  4. The place is hit or miss. Watch out for the dogs. When you get there you will know what I mean. Look up "Cindy's Classic Autos" It is the same place. 608-423-4307 I shouldn't even be giving them a plug. Be warned they were sortof a goosechase last time I went. He has a great stash but he hasn't ever bothered to take me thru the yard. Thats too bad I have to go out and tow another wreck back for the yard and have to go. Anything you need right quick?" No I have a list but I want to look at what I am buying thats why I came up. "Oh well maybe next time you come" If there is a next time. And he isnt cheap either. Id rather go to Pick N pull in Denver, its twice the drive but the scenery when you get there is far better, you can meet other Subaru owners, and the yard is cheaper and has less rust in the parts cars than his do (could tell from the road). Good luck. Ill go back up if a group of us wanted to coordinate a run together, really make it "worth his while" to stick around instead of ditchin out.
  5. Well probably because a weld is more reliable than a bolt, and it was probably cheaper to build. How long did the original ones last, 150k miles or more....? Is that really so bad? You can get a used driveshaft with decent joints out of a low mileage car pretty cheap usually.

  9. I would tend to look around the shifters and such since you have a 3" lift on the brat maybe something has been rubbing and finally rubbed thru the rubber or whatever it was that was keeping water out.
  10. I actually bought NEW axles from Subaru a few years back. Still going strong and I haven't had to replace them or listen to clicking yet. But they weren't cheap! 175 each with the technician discount the parts counter guy gave me if I am not mistaken. I wouldn't do it again but then again I still own the axles. If you are going to be owning a specific Subaru for a LONG time and not 4x4ing it around its probably worth it. Rebuilt ones for 60 are a much easier deal. The day I ordered them I had absolutely had it with Autozone and Napa axles and I didnt own a work area so I was paying a mechanic to do them. He was being nice and pulling them back out when they clicked but we both agreed this crap ain't worth it and gave up on set 3 of bad ones, the new ones didnt click at all. Since then I have had much better luck with Reman axles especially since I quit buying them at Autozone.
  11. Popular USMB Rim choices are: Re-Drill 6 lug truck rims. Some makes/models are better than others for the offset.... Peugeot 504 or 505 offer a good match in offset and are the same 4 lug bolt pattern. This is the only other car out there with the same bolt pattern as an 80's or below style Subaru (except Justy the Justy ones are 4x100?, not the same). There are a few rare 14" Subaru wheels that were made by aftermarket companies. Some people have converted the hubs from 4 bolt to the 5 bolt stuff from a Subaru XT6 but I don't think it has been done on an ea81 yet. The front would be the problem not the rear as this would be just as simple as a rear disc brake upgrade commonly done here on Ea81 Subaru's. The 185 80 R 13 snow tires are actually pretty sharp looking on an unlifted Subaru but treadwear would be poor at best especially in the summer on pavement.   12. Indeed, please update your USER CP area to include your location instead of "HERE. " You gain a lot by sharing this information believe it or not. Guys that might have a set of wheels/tires for sale cheap, the chance to go meet a few people from here to see what their Brats look like after doing modifications, etc..... 185 80 R 13 snow tires are as big as you will find with the 13" rims. I know a guy that is running around on the spare tire rims that are 15" rims with 185 70 15" tires mounted on those thin little rims. Apparently very hard to mount on a tire machine....he owns his own repair shop and only does this for his personal vehicles....safety reasons along with it being difficult keep him from doing it for others along with it being an insane idea that I find rather pointless since 14 and 15" peugeot rims and the many 6 bolt rims that you could utilize are available, safer, and easier along with not looking silly. But he is a creative sort of guy and it didnt cost him a penny. Please also check the USRM at the top for info on tires and other repair/upgrade projects and use the search here as well, amazing what you will find.

  15. Hey guys I am glad to hear everybody and their vehicle made it home under their own power. I am Proud of you guys for working together so well in getting thru the trail and proving what a Subaru can do. *walks to the back of the line to wait for a video/DVD*--I am happy to wait until all the non "honorary" hatch patrolers get their copy as they should get dibs over me.

  17. I dont believe thats true, the inner spline count on my turbo ea81 axles are the same as the non turbo.
  18. Well lets see here....... I am doing a 3AT to 88RX 5spd FT 4wd in my 83 Turbowagon. Turbo gearboxes differ from non turbo(3.90) and auto usually shares the diff ratio of the turbo (3.70). I am partway thru but under advisement of prior topics (please try search function in future it works great), and the USRM (we are working hard to get all the old stuff in and revised on the new site but I believe this is covered over there already), here is what I am doing. I am getting the kit from Jerry. I will use an ea82 clutch kit, I can use the xt6 (er27) clutch kit if I want to. I haven't bought either yet. Aftermarket parts sources tend to just have the kit be the same for both, dealer gets you a tougher clutch for the er27 xt6. You can use the full kit including throwout bearing, including the flywheel even if you want. The Radius rod, plates and trans crossmembers are different between stick and auto along with the control arms. The 5spd is supposed to be worth it especially if you live where theres a good change in elevation (hills/mtns, etc often) as you can be in a more optimal gear for the powerband more often. The lift kit makes the space constraints easier as does Jerry's kit. The driveshaft....you can use the ea82 one if you want to, Jerry recommends having the ea81 1 piece driveshaft LENGTHENED not shortened, to 54" long. That adds around 10 inches of driveshaft if I am not mistaken. I am going to have a shop do mine so its balanced, etc and I am probably going to provide another driveshaft for them to use to get the extra material from but who knows if they will use it. I may replace the u-joints at the same time to avoid future headaches if money isn't real tight. Axle splines on a turbo ea82 trans are different than any of the ea81 trans models, and you have to use ea82 inner joints with ea81 outer joints or maybe you could shorten ea82 axles somehow I don't know whats the better route or if its possible. I would say do what you have a nicer clutch kit for but without the lift kit, jerry's kit and a correct drive shaft it sounds like you might be better off with the 4spd dr trans. Good luck!
  19. SubaruTex is the sticker guy but Dr Rx may have some ideas too. Since I am going to put a RX 5spd Ft4wd box in my 84 Turbowagon I was thinking I might need something too but I am nowhere near that point yet.
  20. Do you have an oxygen sensor socket and is that what you are trying to use or are you trying to use a wrench?
  21. Couldnt he have just used the EA82 Manifold with the carb and put it on the 83 Brat? There would be some cooling/plumbing things to deal with...... Just an idea....
