  1. hrmmm. Check the brake switch for the cruise control first. Look for simple things. There really isnt much to the cruise control systems anymore. All there is si the on/off switch, the cruise switch, the brake and clutch switch, the VSS, the actuator, and the module. i would replace the brake switch abd see what that does. nipper
  2. it takes 3 tanks of gas to decide if something was a success or not... but good luck. nipper
  3. not going to work for the reasons stated here. It works like a differntial. If you have one wheel up in the air and have the car in gear, the other wheel isnt going to turn. Remove the driveshaft you are going to have the same situation. Even with the viscous coupling you need resistance to make that work. nipper
  4. what does and doesnt work on the cruise? how did it operate before it died? nipper
  5. The computer is ONLY a tool, and not perfect when it comes to giving you errors. There have been many times when it does not show up as error. There are a lot of talanted people here. I for one am an automotive engineering technician, there are others here that work in sooby shops, are tuners. The wealth of knowledge here on occasion has blown my mind.If you want it fixed fast, take it to a shop, if you want our advice, give us time to help you. What would take any of us 15-20 minutes to check, can take hours or days since your car is not in our driveways. If you think we are useless, feel free to go someplace else. You can also feel free to use the search feature here and do some research on your problem. We are great at helping each other, we are great at joshing each other and occasionally but heads, but dont expect help after called "no help at all" nipper .
  6. HOLD IT! lets re-address this. When you drive normally the car shifts fine, that rules out the govenor. When the car is floored it revs up to 6500rpm, does it up shift, or did you get to that high an rpm and back off ? The spedometer is a kinked/ bad cable, or a bad VSS sensor. the ABS i dont know, unless the abs takes an input from the spedo head (i doubt it but who knows). I'm not sure how the power light functions, so i cant help there. nipper
  7. Its a throttle lag. Nothing happens when you stomp on the gas peddle at first from a dead stop, not even a crawl. There is nothing wrong with the transmission. i'm going to assume that the fuel pump or pressure regulator are getting tired. At the next service ill have my mechanic look at it, or if i can find pump thats afordable change that myself. nipper
  8. More then once they have said they had a part in stock, just to find out they dont have it.... GRRRRRRRRRRRR nipper
  9. it sounds like he didnt hook up a wiring harness. Can you shift the car manually? Check your fluid level too. nipper
  10. i would let it idle untill the thermostat opens. You may get a huge glub when it opens, thats not what your looking for. It will be continous bubbles. i think on this entire list there have been two cracked piston sleeves, and that came from extreeme over heating. Those engines also knocked. HG's go with age, once the car reaches over 100K it can happen to any car, but very rare on the 1.8L. i think you can buy a kit form an autoparts store that will tell you if exhaust gasses are in the coolant. Flush the system several times, then out in antifreeze. Drive the car and see what happens, then report back. nipper
  11. You would probably do better getting a vaccum gauge and mounting it on the dash, The higher the needle the better the gas mileage your getting. nipper
  12. well eventually your radiator is going to clog, you can get a replacement for about 125 on the net. The fix may last a day, may last for ever. It's up to you since your going to resell the car as to what you want to do. nipper
  13. bad news, its fried. i dont know if this is a viscous limited slip, but i think it is. You are going to chew up tires real fast. Its the same thing as a viscous coupling in a manual tranny as far as how it operates. i wouldnt drive it untill its fixed. nipper
  14. you have several. There is the hvac drain hose that can ploug up and leak inside the car, If you have a sunroof there are two drain on either side of the sunroof. Also you have many body drains. You have drains in the cowel, and clean out the drains in the bottom of the doors, also open the front doors and clean out all the junk in the front fenders. nipper
  15. you can do it, but it would have to be a very low boost pressure, if you dont want to rebuild the engine. These are tough engines, but you are taking a 50/50 chance on doing it without a rebuild. You would have to add an oil cooler since the engine was not designed for turbo. Also there is a lot of plumbing to go through. you have tow choices, sell it and buy a proper turbo, or retrofit a complete turbo engine in the car. nipper
  16. first thing see if a dealer has the kit. The kit is usually everything that goes under the hood (and since soobys dont change much may be around). The control panel may or may not be the same. If not go to a scrapyard and strip one with AC. Gte a haynes manual and make sure your grabbing all the relays too. Also googel aftermarket automotive airconditioning. You may find a kit there too nipper
  17. i always got mine from JC whitney as they were name brand and always fit and worked. i'll share that information. A lot of times pepboys have pissed me off, just another reason to avoid them. nipper
  18. before anything else, check the HG. is this an automatic? tow ways to get oil in the radiator, a leaking tranny cooler or a blown HG. clean the overflow, and look at the coolant in the radiator, do you see oil in there? Start the car with the cap off and let it idle for a while and see if you see alot of bubbles. a 1.8L shouldnt have a blown HG but its possible, especially if it was beaten on when stolen nipper
  19. Inspect the undercarrige, and make sure there is no rot there. Surface rust is easy enough to deal with, perforation is a lot harder. Clean out all the body drains, then if the chassis is ok go ahead and fix it. nipper
  20. the big give away is if the car overheats and you have no heat in the car, then its a HG. Test the coolant for exhaust gasses or look for bubbles. How many miles are on this thing nipper
  21. its going to need a tranny, its that simple. Once a tranny starts slipping no way to correct it. i dont know what the cost is for these trannies, but i think they are specific to the svx. nipper
  22. you need air fuel and spark to run. SInce you confirmed you have no spark, have you checked to make sure the fuel injectors are operating (and the fuel pump). Do you have any spark at all or just assuming there is no spark. im guessing you have a bad cam or crank postion sensor. there are not many sensors that will kill the car. the only otehr one that will do it is the eng temp sensor for the cpu. nipper
  23. it's an agonizing 1/2 second where nothing happens, the car doesnt even feel like its rolling forward. this is prbbly the one thing held over from my major car accident which im still revovering. When i saw the car behind comin up on me at 50mph, i stood on the gas pedal, the 98 legacy took off, and the 5-10 mph difference is why i can still walk. Now if the same thing happened with this car, well, il'd rather not think about it. Thats why it bothers me. nipper
