No, that was the first thing i did when it was bought - put a 4dr in . I might try a new pcv valve and clean/replace all the hoses before i pull the engine. Is there a difference between the turbo and non turbo oil pumps? If not, i could try my other one that i know is pretty goo in there. Those parts are cheap! Thanks, ill try him next time i need anything.

Dipstick blow out!
That would be a good solution, but i think ill stick with the insulation tape for the moment, cos im a bit lazy.

How 'smooth' should an ea81t be?
I have been consistently 'tuning it up' for the last few months now......heres a list in no particular order: Reconditioned vacuum advance diaphragm Replaced ignition module replaced thermostat re conected a disconnected centrifugal advance spring replaced spark plugs, ignition leads, coil Tried to set valves properly, but hla's arnt moving cleaned lots of connectors replaced a leaky fuel injector replaced knock sensor replaced stator magnet in distributor thats about all i can remember at the moment, but as you can see, ive been pretty buisy since it was bought a few months ago! It certainly runs better now, just not as good as i think it should.

#8 wire = fencing wire. just kidding though, i wont really use it to hold the dipstick in! Its just one of those stereotypes about nz'ers, that we use #8 wire for everything. No doubt it will get held in with insulation tape, like most other loose things on my cars.

i have an '81 carb'd motor sitting in the garage, complete with everything including whole exhaust system (in fact, i still have the whole car), so i reckon i could just shove that in there temporarily while i have the ea81t out. I figure all i'd have to do is power the coil and fuel pump, and hook up a couple of the sensors. leave the rest of the cars wiring tied up out of the way. Am i missing something???

5-speed in 84 turbo wagon
I dont understand this buisiness of changing speedo cables. Someone told me i needed to do that when i did the 4 dr swap into my turbo wagon, but the auto one fitted fine. When you say 'too small' what dimension are you talking about? Im not saying the auto one will fit the 5dr, cos ive not done that, but i thought the 4dr and 5dr had the same cable??

Most parts i get, apart from stuff like cv boots and other common stuff, has to come from japan. Its a pain in the butt.

How 'smooth' should an ea81t be?
i may have mentioned it before, but i think this engine has had a major prob at some stage, maybe a blown head gasket that was left for too long. I think the only thing that was done when it was fixed was a new turbo (still shiney!), and new rings (burns little to no oil). I dont think the valve seals/giudes were done, as it has lots of blowby; the hydraulic lifters don't seem to work, and under the rocker covers and inside the pcv hoses is full of grimey grity sludge (The pcv hoses were all but blocked up with it). I also noticed it blew a whitish grey cloud when i started it today, just for a few seconds. Never seen that before. The oil pressure light also sometimes takes a good 1-2 seconds to turn off when its started. Still, it runs well, if a little rough and noisey, stays cool no matter what its doing, gets good mileage, starts first turn every time. Im sorta tossing and turning over whether to take it out and put the other one (carb) in while i recond the ea81t. Any opinions?

L Series IDLING HIGH - Please read on...
It could indeed be the auto choke, ive seen them do that on other cars before, but ive never had/seen a subie with one.

- Dipstick blow out!
Often when i check the ea81t's oil, the dipstick has been blown up out of its seat by about 2cm so that it doesn't seal. I cant see how the crank case would be subjected to a positive pressure, since i know that the pcv hose from the right rocker cover to the intake hose is not blocked. Any ideas on what causes this? Cheers.- front wheel noise
The wheels i speak of are from an '81...solid disks. Perhaps they are just strange wheels.- How 'smooth' should an ea81t be?
Hmm, mine doesn't get any smoother when warm. Must be those hydrauilc lifters i spose.- clutch cable adjustment
Sounds like it needs tightening. With the return spring off, there should be just a little slack in the release lever. I think it should correspond to about 10mm slack at the pedal. As long as the clutch cable is not tight with the clutch pedal released, and the clutch disengages enough to change gears etc with the pedal depressed, you wont be doing anything any harm.- LSD Q? do i need the trans also??
Yeah, i think that would cause some pretty major binding when in 4wd. Definitely get the trans as well.- pulling to the right problem
sounds very much like a dragging brake or loose/worn suspension bushings to me.- 5-speed in 84 turbo wagon
Well, you need to do some very minor floor cutting around the shifter (the at shifter hole is very small).- Fun At The Subaru dealership!
My dealer enjoys telling me that ea81s didn't come out with turbos and were all carb'd. Then it takes them 2 weeks for them to find out they cant get the part im looking for- Car makin a Chucha chucka sound
Maybe a bearing on the gearbox input shaft.- How 'smooth' should an ea81t be?
I know its a hard question to answer, but im just after some comparisons with non turb ea81s and even ea82s. Im asking this because i have never seen or heard another ea81t, so i have no idea what mine should sound like! Cheers.- front wheel noise
Ehh? One of my sets of ea81 mags are on my friends ea82t wagon - no rubbing, they just stick out the side a little further. - Dipstick blow out!
