Variety of concerns: turbo, smoke, gas smell
wrxsubaru replied to terryb52's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would try and not get a huge amount of water in the sprk plug holes and the coils on top the engine, (were the spark plugs go to). You could stuff some rags in the holes. Ive presure washed a couple 1 gen legacys engines and have never had a problem with hurting any thing. I would be care full of getting the high presure water on the hoses tho becasue of 10+ years of extreme heat genertaed by the tubro they me pretty britle and break. And those turbo vacume lines cna get pretty tricky to replace. What color smoke is coming out of your tail pipe. Is it blue, black, or white? I thought you could replcae the gaskets on most tubros if they blow, my friend has had them replcaed with his supra. If you do need a replcament turbo i wouldent buy one from subaru it would cost a arm and a leg, when you could get a WRX, or any other sube turbo for much less.

Subaru reference
There are some farily large diffrences between a ej20, and a ej20t like the one in the WRX some were colsed deck and came with all internals forged. In Europe Subaru offers them with well over 300 horse and 300 ft pounds of torq. The engine code for the 3.3 liter in the SVX is eg33.

Horse Power
Not one of the ej22s in our family went below 200,000 miles. But you have to remeber single over head cam, and no varible valve timing. Dosent subaru put out a 2 liter non turbo that puts out 190 horse, becasue of the varible valve timing and high compresion pistons. I bet if you port and polished the head and put some high compresion pistons and did all that small stuff you could get it up to around 200 horse. Also ive seen many very low output Italian engines that put out less power per liter and require higher octane.

Do You Carry a Spare Alternator?
wrxsubaru replied to subiedoobiedoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI was able to drive to drive my SVX about 100-150 miles before my battery started to give and needed a charge, with probley 15 start ups. That was with out the lights, but some radio time. All i carry is some duct tape, some water, tools, and a fix a flat. I never have carried any extra parts in my car. Never have been stuck becasue a part broke with any subaru ive or my parants have owned, but have been stuck many times with Chrysler products.

Look what I just bought.
wrxsubaru replied to SuperRallyRoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGood deal for $1500 thought you were going to pay over $2000. All you have to do to get some great ej22 sound is let your mufflar rust out, or punch a hole it. That legacy i bought for $100 in michigan sounded like a beast with alot of its exhust rusted away and the extremly lound half shaft ticks, (louder than the exhust).

Engine Knock 1992 SVX 90k miles
wrxsubaru replied to Bociba's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI never heard of a eg33 getting piston slap, at least not yet. How does the timing belt tensioner make that sound? I have heard of idler pullies making this sound, but not the hydralic tensioner.

Hot Forester...
wrxsubaru replied to Sweet82's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRedline water is a additive you can put into your cooloing system that spose to keep the temps around 20 deggres cooler. I acully wouldent expect the car to get hot pulling a light load (under 1500 pounds) to cause the car to over heat. Ive town loads of 1800 pounds with 5 people in the car with no over heating problems on a hot day in a 1 gen legacy auto. But I never went up a long steep grades.

Suspension Clonk 91 Legacy
wrxsubaru replied to AussieIan's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah i have heard of this many times. My SVX does this right now, common problem with top mounts on the SVX at least. For the SVX subaru redeigned the top mounts after 92 so they will last longer with out the clunk, noit subaru if this applies to all subes or just the SVX.

How long will my car last?
wrxsubaru replied to Skanky's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI really dont think you could of picked a better car for this. The only car that might be better is a 2.2 liter sube. I really dont think these conditions will have that large of a affect on the relibility of your sube. The only thing i would recomend is let your car warm up alittle before you start flooring it around. this is what subes were spose to be made for, dirt roads, mud and some water.

Comptaible Transmisions?
wrxsubaru replied to Danbob99's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSorry i just assumed it was a auto trannie for some reason.
-
Comptaible Transmisions?
wrxsubaru replied to Danbob99's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe trannies should swap. The only diffrence should be the diff ratio. You should be able to find out waht that is throught the trannie number (not sure how but some should here should know), or if you could find out what the rear diff ratio was by finding the diff that went to the car that would work to. If it is a SVX trannie the center diff has 1to1.1 front rear ratio, like the new WRX, so if the front diff in the trannie is 3.9, the rear diff should be 3.545, iam pretty sure on that one, the legacy turbo may have the same thing as the SVX, not sure on that tho.

Is the head gasket problem fixed yet?
wrxsubaru replied to wrxsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah the 2.5 turbo is a semi closed block. Subaru did change the block allitle, they added some more ribs and some other stuff.

Is the head gasket problem fixed yet?
One of my friends dad is buying a new car, or looking into it. Iam suggesting the new legacy and he seems to like it. I dont think he will buy the turbo or 6 so i was wondering if the headgasket problem is fixed on the ej25 yet. I know it usally takes time to tell, but does any one know if subaru did alot of work working the heads or the gasket? I talkted to a couple dealers and they said that subaru dident like the head gasket probems and tried to fix it, but subaru has tried before and failed, and the dealers are tring to sell a car. Thanks

300 HP Subaru Outback???
wrxsubaru replied to mdevine's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe ej25t in the new STi seems to be holding power fairly well, rember it has a very close power to cubic inch as the ej20t.

300 HP Subaru Outback???
wrxsubaru replied to mdevine's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFor inital cost the 2.5 liter will easily out gun the h6 in hp and torq. All you need to do is upgrade the turbo put a 3inch exhust and you should be able to get a relible 350 horse with some tuning. I would go onto http://www.nasioc.com they have alot of info on the 2.5 turbo engine mod paths. The only trickey part is the legacy ej25t has the turbo directly conected to the inner cooler some some comtom fab would be required to fit a STi unit or any up grade for the STi. In Europe the Legacy R has the h6 with the 6 speed.

legacy recalls
wrxsubaru replied to scooby dooo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI thought if you used the subaru stop leak every so often Subaru would extend the a head gasket warrente up to 100,000 miles? I would use if it would extend your warrente that far.

P-Brake release button snapped off!!
wrxsubaru replied to Lesbaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had this problem with my SVX, and since its a 5spd with out the hill holder i wanted to fix it. You should still be able to use you hand break untill its fixed, if the handle is still on i would take it off so you can use it its only 1 screw. If its the same as the SVX there should be a little 1 knob that sticks out that you can use for you handbrake, you just need to push it in to relase. This maybe hard to do but at least you have a hand break. If you lose or have lost the racheting mechanism all you have to do to set it is pull the knob out.
