  1. edrach do the 03 wrx seats have the height adjusters and is the only difference between the 03 and 04 wrx seats just the shape, because I really like the one piece look of the 04, better then the 03 that has a seat back with a adjustable headrest on top
  2. I am wanting to swap some 04 wrx front seats into my 95 legacy and my 97 impreza. I was wondering if there are any aftermarket seat rails that sit low and bolt right on, so that the new seats won't sit high, it might not be that big of a problem in the legacy but theres not much head room in the impreza, plus I would like to be able to keep and use the height adjuster so when my girlfriend needs to drive it she can raise up the seat to see. Does anybody know how to mount them so they dont sit high or do I just have to deal with it or get different seats. Also will the 02-03 wrx seats not sit high since they look different. Thanks in advance
  3. Thanks for the link, I already had checked that but couldn't find one that matched up so I think the junkyard didn't give me the right one.
  4. Is there any difference in the springs heights from a standard legacy and a outback or is the height all gained from the outback strut. Because if not and you had just legacy springs all you would need is outback struts
  5. Hello I found a dual range transmission here in the usa from a 1997 jdm 2.0 turbo legacy. Can anybody tell me what the gearing is. The trans ID says 64-ty752x1dca. Since its a turbo does it have 4.11 gearing or is it like the older 91 turbos that had like 3.7 or 3.9 gears. It comes with: tranny, linkages, drive shaft, rear diff and halfshafts. Is there anything else I need to get so it will just bolt right in. I have a 97 impreza. Is there any problems Im going to run into with using a jdm transmission in my usa impreza. Will it plug into my tranny harness and run of my tcu if the manual has one. Does the turbo use different axles in the tranny or the rear diff, like do turbos have a different spline count or are the axles different lengths or diameters. Also is a dual range tranny longer then a normal awd ej tranny. They don't have the center console, so I think I could just mod a ea82 console to work or just mod a regular impreza console. Will this won't bolt right in? Thanks in advance
  6. aren't forester trailing arm mounts different then the impreza's. Seen a picture of a trailing arm mount and the hole was in a different place and and shaped a little different and was supposed to move the wheel back like 8mm but I'm not sure what it came off of. Also I thought that outback trailing arm mounts where supposed to be different then regular legacy trailing arm mounts and supposed to move the wheel back some also, but when I lifted my 95 legacy with outback struts and springs I tried swapping the outback trailing arms mounts on but they looked excatly the same, no difference at all even measured just to be sure, so maybe the junkyard sent me the wrong ones. In Australia when people lift there 1st gen legacies, they say to swap on outback trailing arm mounts to move the wheel back away from the front of the rear fender, so maybe the difference is only between gen 1 trailing arm mounts and gen 2 outback mounts. Another way you could move the wheel back is by getting some trailing arms that you can adjust the length on. I think somebody on another bord was using those to fix his problem. Maybe somebody can post up some comparison pics of the different trailing arm mounts and what they came off of. So we can all get a defenitive answer. 98obster when swapped on forester stuff did you car sit level or did it have a rake to it, and how big a tire can fit under the forester spring perch? You can fit 29 inch tires under the outback struts spring perch, so I went that route incase in the future bfg quits making the 28 inch mud terrain I got room for the 29's and almost every tire maker makes a 29 inch mud terrain.
  7. Well cash is getting tight, just got a 2 inch lift kit so looks like the 4.11 tranny is out. I figure It should still drive pretty well with the 28 inch mud terrains even with the 3.9 tranny because im swapping in a 2.5 engine since I need a engine any ways, this way after I get it all running and lifted with the big tires if it seems slow accelerating or just all around slow, I can swap in the 4.11 later down the road when I have more cash, but If it drives fine with the 2.5 engine and 3.9 tranny I've saved myself around $800 bucks in parts and labor that can go towards upgrades to rear disks and maybe bigger brakes all around. Anybody that has lifted there impreza and is running 27 inch or larger tires and has the 3.9 can you please post up your driving impressions of your car. Thanks for your time and I'll post up some pics when its done
  8. Hello I am getting a 2 inch liftkit for my 97 impreza in about 5 days, I plan on also using legacy outback struts to make room for larger tires and the extra 1.5 inches of lift. I want to use legacy springs all around because the imprezas springs are too short. Will it sit level if I use legacy springs all around. I know zap used outback struts and springs and the rear sat higher and some one suggested using legacy springs in the rear to get it to even out. I don't want the extra 1.5 to 2 inches of lift from the outback springs. Maybe if Zap had used outback sus springs it would have been level. So my thinking is to use legacy wagon springs up front and sedan springs in the rear, just incase it sits higher in the rear if I was to use legacy wagon springs all around. My reasoning is that sedan rears aren't as stiff or maybe are shorter then wagon springs because the wagon springs should be designed to haul more heavy loads a because you can fit more stuff in a wagon then in the trunk of a sedan it would have to be stiffer. Maybe I'm wrong but this is what I'm thinking. How much longer are legacy outback springs compared to regular L springs, or for that matter gt springs. Does anybody have the measurements of them or pics, If so can you post them up so everyone can know the difference between legacy outback, gt, and L or Ls springs. Or if there are other spring combinations I can use with my outback struts to get it to sit level without adding extra height. Feel free to post up your suggestions. Thanks in advance

    lsd?

I have a 97 impreza and am going to do some upgrades. 1. How hard is it to convert a 4.44 vlsd out of a 2000 rs to 4.11 vlsd, because I already have a spare 4.11 rear diff and found a 4.44 vsld and axles. I already know I need the rs axles because they are different then the regular axles. 2. Is it worth it, I've heard the vlsd aren't that good. The price is around $250. Anybody switched to one and could tell a noticeable difference? 3. Should I just save up a little more(they are around $400-450 I think), and buy a jdm mechanical lsd and axles. Which I assume means its a clutch type and not torsen, and I think I have to use the jdm axles because one axle is longer then the other buy a decent amount. 4. Should I try and save for a long time and purchase a kaaz clutch type diff, they are about $1200. I can't see them being that much more effective then the jdm mechanical subaru impreza clutch type diffs though. Plus since I only paid $750 for my car it's kinda steep haha 5. How much noise do the jdm impreza clutch type diffs make or clutch type diffs in general, I've read some say they are loud when engaging and going around corners and others that say they don't make that much noise at all. Not silent like the vsld but supposedly they are better for overall traction. Thanks In advance
  10. ok I think I'm gonna get a 97 gt 4.11 geared trans if I can find out if its cable operated and not hydrualic, its around $150 cheaper and there is one located around here, from what I've found it is the same gearing as the outback trans in all gears except 5th, the outback is .871 and the gt is .780, so that means I won't be turning the really high rpms at highways speeds like the outback, Ill just deal with the speedo being off and maybe get a scan guage 2, because the guy at the company I talked to said it should be able to correct the speedo. If that doesn't work dakota digital has something thats supposed to correct speedo's. Here is the link that has alot of transmission info for new gens http://www.northursalia.com/techdocs/trannychart/trannychart.pdf the rest of the site has some cool mods also, sorry if its already been posted before
  11. Ok I might have found a 96 outback manual trans from one that had the 2.2. I know thats pretty rare, but the junk yard listing says its build date is from 6/95, does that make it the 4.11's the 96 outbacks are supposed to come with or is it the 3.9 manual that came on the 95 legacy outbacks, because the first year of the outback production was 95, It was just basically a appearance package of two tone paint, small fog lights (not like the big ones that came in 96-99) and a different interior, it had no lift. So was just as low as the normal legacy wagon. Still trying to find out if 96-97 outback trans are cable operated. Thanks for all the replies so far
  12. Well I still haven't figured out for sure if the 96-97 outback 4.11 manual trans are cable operated and since they seem to command a pretty high price I was wondering if I could get a 4.11 from a 90-94 legacy manual because they seem way more reasonably priced, and just take the 3.9 from my impreza outback sport and swap the 4.11 gears and diff into the 3.9 case and install a outback speedo gear and in effect create the trans I need at a way cheaper price. Does this seem like it would work or are there sensors and wires that will throw a check engine light or not even work properly since the 4.11 legacy trans and tcu are obd 1 and the 3.9 impreza trans and tcu are obd 2
  13. Thanks to all for the info, keep it coming for the other questions above that haven't been answered yet. I might try and do a franken engine but, the engine just had new headgaskets put on like 2 weeks ago and all new seals and timing belt and water pump done like 2 months ago, don't know if I would want to ruin a recently rebuilt engine for that, might just find a newer shell to put it in. What was the first years the imprezas, foresters and legacies used the phase 2 2.5 and how long did each use it for
  14. I lifted my 95 legacy and put 27.5 inch all terrains on it, speedo was way off so to get some gearing back and a more accurate speedo I swapped out my 4.11 auto and rear diff and swapped in a outback 4.44 auto and rear diff, the speedo reads correct now, I didn't change the tcu I think the outback has a different speedo gear in the transmission, I just got a 97 impreza and am going to lift it and if I keep the 3.9 transmission I'm gonna swap in a outback speedo gear from the 4.11 manual and see if that will fix it, I don't think its the tcu that controls it
  15. So if I have to use the ej25 intake to use the ej25 engine does that mean I can use a phase 2 out of a 2000 rs becuase I might be getting one of those that just had the headgaskets done and only has 97 thousand miles on it really cheap
  16. I just bought a 97 impreza outback with 3.9 manual trans and have plans to lift it and put atleast 27 or 28 inch tires on it, maybe 29 if I go crazy:grin: . I have some questions that hopefully some of you guys can answer. Suspension ?s The plan is to use a 2 inch liftkit from australia and then legacy outback struts and springs with impreza tophats in the rear but I don't know if those tophats will fit on a legacy outback strut amd spring. 1. After lifting and putting the larger tires on how much did it effect all around drivability, stuff like power and acceleration. Is it underpowered like a lifted ea82 with 27's and the 3.9 trans. is 5th gear pretty much usless? 2. Whats the largest tire that can fit under the spring perch on a forrester strut, and do the sg forrester struts give more lift then sf forrester struts? I read on the ausubaru.com forums that 29 inch is the largest tire that can fit under the spring perch on outback struts and from what it looks like on my lifted legacy theres enough room that that seems about right. 3. I have read that some of you have lifted using forrester struts and springs but did you use impreza tophats on that? and others used outback struts and springs and outback tophats and they just redrilled some of the holes where the rear strut top mounts. Do the different struts have different ways for tophats to mount to them? the liftkit from either scorpion or a byb kit has to use stock impreza hats, if anybody knows of a way to get them to mount on outback struts and springs it would make things alot easier. Engine ?s the plan is to swap in a 2.5 if the headgasket problem has finally be solved 1. Since mine came with no engine I was thinking of swapping in a 2.5 but have a few reservations about it. But the extra power would be nice. 1a. Did the final redesign of the headgaskets fix the blowing the headgasket problem that all 2.5's seem to have. Making them reliable like the 2.2 1b. From what I have read my 2.2 computer should have no problem running the 2.5 and I can just use my 2.2 manifold I think, but do I have to stick with a phase 1 2.5 or can I use a phase 2, because a phase 2 wont leave me stranded like a phase 1, if it blows I can just keep filling it with coolant Transmission ?s the plan is to maybe change transmissions from 3.9 to 4.11 since the engine was out and if i decide to get another 2.2 ,thought it might help especially if I go with 29" tires. Plus the speedo would read correct. Heres the information I think I know about the transmssions feel free to correct me about anything in this post and when answering the questions because I'm not totally sure. Still trying to learn this stuff so maybe someday I could help others. 1. The 96-97 legacy outbacks and gt's have cable operated clutches and they switched to hydraulic ones in the 98-99 outback and gt's But Im not sure so I think the 96-97 should be a direct swap and just bolt right in. If they are, will they accept impreza axles or do legacy outback axles have a different spline count then impreza axles. 2. I already have a rear 4.11 r160 from where I changed my legacy auto trans to and outback trans so I assume if impreza spline counts are the same as legacy outbacks then they should work with this diff, unless I were to find a rear 4.11 lsd from a manual 2000 rs because I believe the rs lsd rear diffs use different impreza axles, so I would have to find the ones that came on that model year. Sorry for such a long post and so many questions but I have alot planned for my impreza and I don't want to waste money on parts that won't fit because I didn't do my homework. hopefully these are all the questions I need answered. Thanks in advance and thanks again to everybody on this board, the knowledge I've been getting from it is priceless!!!
  17. The numbers where right it was a outback transmission, found the problem the used transmission from the junkyard was junk, its drivable but getting louder and louder, to rebuild it was gonna cost around $1500, so Im gonna drive it until it dies and look for a new used transmission, hopefully this time the junkyard will be honest about the condition of the trans. but on the bright side I just picked up a 97 impreza outback, it had no engine but I scored it $750 it has 136,000 on it, everything else is in good condtion and no rust:banana:. So expect to see a few posts asking questions about that, and thanks again to everybody for the help
  18. I have swaped an 96 outback auto 4.44 transmission in my 95 legacy sedan with matching rear 4.44 diff to match, the first rear diff didn't operate smooth kind of binded some and the car made a loud screeching howling kind of sound, that sounds like it starts from the diff and goes up the drive shaft when the car is running between 50 and 60 mph and only when its not under acceleration, so i got another rear outback diff from the junkyard and swapped it in, and it runs smooth no binding but still makes the same sound screeching sound, you can kind of hear it inside the car but when up on a lift and doing 55 its so loud you need earplugs, if your standing underneath, so I am going to get yet another outback diff and try it, hopefully the third time is the charm, maybe just two bad ones in a row, my question is, is the outback diff different physically then a regular legacy diff or is it just the different gears inside and should I be trying to get a 4.44 rear gt diff instead if it is different. Or do I just have bad luck. p.s. swapped out the drive shaft just to make sure it was not a bad carrier bearing or u joints and it still did it, so I have no Idea. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the sound would be greatly appreciated
  19. Thanks for the info grossgary, Ive been lurking on this board and ausubaru.com for a few years gathering subaru knowledge by bits and pieces at a time so I knew I needed a phase I tranasmission from 96 or early 97. My new used outback trans doesn't have the external screw on filter, it was the internal that had a hole in it . the trans is 4 bolts and not the eight and no spin on filter, so I know it was atleast a pre 98 before the redesign, plus from what I can put together they also changed the plugs on the redesigned trans, everything on mine plugged up just right. I used to have the trans code for the 4.44 auto outback saved on my computer( that I got off a post on here somewhere) but my harddrive died so its lost, but before that happened I read it to the junkyard guy over the phone and they confirmed they matched up, so I knew what to order, I think they might have sent me a different tranny. Looked like it had atleast 170,000 plus on it, not the 51 thousand they stated. As long as it is 4.44 I can still handle not getting the low mileage one, just a little pissed. I can't read the code on the tranny now since its bolted up and I don't think it has to be completly removed to change the clutch packs, so I dont think I can see it anytime soon, but I remember that the junkyard had written on it 96 outback(whatever thats worth:lol: ) The plan is, we are gonna cannabalize the parts we need off my old one and see if everything goes away, if it doesn't then try my old 4.11 diff and if that doesn't work, we are gonna just try another 4.44 outback diff from a different junk yard. Another new thing I found out about my messsed up speedo problem is, when it is put in fwd with the fuse it works perfect no bouncing at all just nice and smooth and accurate. So I don't think its any thing stripped on the speed gear in the tranny, maybe its a malfunctioning speed sensor. So could the messed up rear clutch packs and or malfunctioning cduty cause it to bounce around, or could it be from the tranny and rear diff being mismatched. I still think it is a 4.44 tranny because my speedo reads dead on now even with my big tires, with my old tranny it was way way off. And its strange in 4x4 mode from 0 to 30mph how it bounces around and after 30mph it works normal. The reason I'm gonna use a new cduty is for piece of mind, because I have read stories that people either changed one or the other and after it was back together it wouldn't work so they would have to take it back apart and replace the one they didn't or it woud work for a little while then the part they didn't replace died, so I figured since its gonna be apart might as well, you know what they say about an ounce worth of prevention, hahah, so there it is as of now, if anybody has any answers about whats causing the crazy speedo or anything else to add feel free. It goes back to the mechanic to get the work done thursday so I will keep you guys updated with the progress and what we find out.
  20. Another new problem just showed up, the speedo needle bounces around if going under 30mph but once I reach that speed it works normal.
  21. Sorry I'll be more specific, and I guess it will be best to just start from the beginning so if anybody has some answers to this or some other problems from my build just chime in. This is the saga of my subaru so far. I have a 1995 legacy lsi automatic that I lifted with outback gr2 struts and pedders heavy duty standard height outback springs and 27.4 inch tall by 9.5 inch wide bridgestone dueller revo's. My transmission started to go so I figured I would replace my 4.11 tranny with a 96 outback 4.44 to get some performance back and to get my speedo to read normal again(already got one ticket because of that). I located one and the junkyard said it only had 51 thousand miles:banana: . Well I got it and when it arrived it looked like it had way more then 51 thousand miles on it and the transmission filter had a hole in it and the rest of the filter was so clogged you couldn't even see it:mad: . Located a 96 outback 4.44 rear diff with around 114 thousand miles on it, my mechanic changed the filter and fluid in the tranny and bolted everything up, now it has torque bind. I know its torque bind because when its in fwd it goes away. I'm pretty sure its atleast an outback 4.44 tranny because my speedo is now back to being correct but can't be sure because even in a straight line it feels like its binding a little (can bad clutch packs cause this?) so maybe it is a 4.11 tranny but then my speedo should still be off, but I think the rear diff is bad also because even in fwd it clunks in the rear sometimes. So the plan is to get a new c duty solenoid(better to buy new then chance it with the old one from my 4.11) and use the clutch packs off my old 4.11 transmission and bolt all that up to the outback tranny, because it had no torque bind issues so I'm assuming the clutch packs from it are still good. then see if everything goes away, and maybe just get a different outback rear diff also. When I was talking about play in the drive shaft I mean't when I turned it with my hand thats where the play was at, I don't think it had any from front to back. The other problem I have is I replaced my camshafts with the mild 220 grind from delta cams and my car now wants to Idle a 500rpm sometimes it seems like its gonna stall, and when we adjust it to idle higher the computer learns and adjusts it back, so another qestion is, is it supposed to idle that low or is something else going on and if so how do I fix it. Additional info, timing belt, water pump and filter was done about 20 thousand miles ago and I just had the rear seal and valve gaskets and the other seals done with the camshafts, and had the metal separator plate put in just to be safe. Sorry for such a long post. If anybody has some info or theories or suggestions for any of this or anything else I might have overlooked, just post it up, because this is my daily driver and I need it back on the road. Also is there and easy way to tell if it is a 4.44 tranny? That just about covers it, if I can think of anything else I will post it up Thanks in advance
  22. How much play should there be in the drive shaft I can turn mine about half and inch to almost an inch before it catches, is that the usual amount and if it isn't, how much should be, and what do I need to do to remedy this. thanks in advance
  23. That's looking sweet:clap: . Do you think you could build it with the 4 inch strut extentions but use maybe 2, 2.5, or 3 inches for the blocks, depending on what the axles and cv's can handle, because that diff looks really low, I think the axles and cv's could handle more of an angle. The pics from the ones in australia seem like the diff is higher, I have my 95 legacy lifted with just outback struts and springs running 27.4 inch tires, my diff looks like its got a little more ground clearance under it then that one, so mines all suspension, and my axles and cv's haven't had any problems. Its just a suggestion you might look into because its always nice to have more clearance under the diffs.
  24. noticed the daul verses single and found another 95 head, problems fixed, thanks for the info
  25. Does anybody know if there is a difference, and if so what the difference is between a 95 legacy ej22 head and a 98 legacy ej22 head. I am getting some delta cams installed in my 95 legacy but when the mechanic was installing them he noticed the right side heads were warped so he replaced it with the heads off of a 98 legacy he had at his garage. So one side is 95 heads and the other is 98, even though the 95 engine is a non interference and the 98 a interference engine, he said they were pretty much the same, my question is, are the heads the same design, will my engine run properly like this and will the cams work because they were made for the 95 model or do i have to have find another 95 head and get him to take the engine back apart and change that side. Also is the compression ratio the same, or do I have nothing to worry about Thanks in advance
