I had that problem recently in my 95 legacy and it was my starter that went bad, when I tried starting it, I could turn the key and nothing in the dash lit up, no clicking sounds like the battery was even getting power to it, I could turn the key back to the off postion then try starting it again and it would either start up or the lights in the dash would atleast come on, then i could repeat it and it would start, but eventually it completly quit, they way I determined it was the starter was first checked to make sure my battery wasn't dead. when I was trying to start it and I couldnt get any power my dad took a rubber covered handled wrench held the rubber covered end and banged a couple times on the starter when I was turning the key, and it ended up starting, so give that a try and if it starts its the starter, I didnt have the clicking under the dash though so yours might be a little different, I talked to a sub mechanic and he said if you don't have the starter tightend just right sometimes it doesn't work, he didn't believe it when somebody told him that but when he tried it on two subs that were having trouble starting and damned if it didn't work, so now he checks that first thing Hope this helps some
  2. didn't the 1990-94 legacy manuals use a mechanical speed sensor(?) I think thats what its called, in the transmission to read mph and the 1995-1999 and up have a electronic speed sensor in the transmission so I don't think it would be compatible with your dash cluster, but I'm new to subies, so I could be wrong, maybe somebody more knowledgeable or who has taken them both apart could answer this definitively.   3. Scott is that how far the tire is going to stick out when mounted using your lift, because that looks sick and is the exact look I am going to go for when building a legacy. When do you think you will have kits for sale for legacies and other EJ's. Also are you just gonna do the 4 inch lift or are you gonna do 2 and 3 inch later on. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see how it turns out .
  4. Thanks for the info I guess I am going to start looking for an impreza outback sport and swap in a 4.11 manual from a legacy outback because I think they use the same style manual trannys. On the other hand I like the body style of the first gen legacy wagons and would still like to know if the newer 4.44 auto from the obd2 outback will work with the obd1 system of a 1990-94 turbo wagon or non turbo wagon with no problems. That would look mean lifted and with some flares off a nissan 1995 pickup or the flares off a 1996 or newer pathfinder and 29inch firestone mud terrains:slobber:. Oh and incase anybody is wondering my daily driver is a 1995 legacy lsi sedan lifted with outback kyb gr2 struts and pedder heavy duty stock height springs and I run 27 bridgestone dueler at revos, just swapped on dual piston front calipers and hopefully soon to be swapped 4.44 transmision and diff from an outback. I think I have like 12 or 13 inches under the rear diff:eek: I will try and post up some pics when I get a camera.
  5. First off I would like to thank everyone who has replied to my other questions, the information was very helpful, this board and its members rock:headbang: . So here are my new questions: 1. Do the 1996-2000 impreza outback sports get their extra height difference from the standard impreza from having lift blocks like the legacy outbacks do, or is it from the larger tires it comes with from the factory. 2. Did the 1996-2000 impreza outback sports come with 4.11 gearing in manual and 4.44 in auto or do they have the standard impreza gearing of 3.9 manual and 4.11 auto. 3. If they didn't come with the 4.11 manual or 4.44 auto can I just put one from a 1996-1999 legacy outback in it, I know it will physically bolt up but will the sensors and stuff be the exact same, simple plug and play, and in the manuals case are they the same type of tranny ie are they both cable operated or hydraulic operated or are they push or pull style. As you can tell I'm not really clear about much on these trannys. 4. Can a 1996-99 4.44 auto outback tranny work on a 1990-94 turbo legacy with no check engine lights coming on, or other problems, because one is obdI and the other is obdII, would the obdII just have a couple extra sensors not being used and I assume the tcu from the obdI turbo legacy would need to be used. 5. Do jdm manual transmissions with 4.44 have the same shift pattern as our U.S. cars or is it reversed since their steering is on the other side, and would a jdm transmission work with our U.S cars ie do they have all the same sensors, would it also be plug and play and have no check engine lights. As you can tell I have been bitten by the modified suby bug again:grin: and am looking to into my options for a new project. Trying to minimize the performance loss when going to even bigger tires this time and more lift, and yes I know I will need to also change the rear diff to match.   6. sorry for the misunderstanding I meant the difference between impreza wagons and impreza outback sports. Just really wanted to find out for sure if it had the body spacers or different suspension, because used outback sports usually cost more and if it just different paint and interior treatments I can just get a regular wagon
  7. Hello all, I have a couple questions about some imprezas. 1. Does the 1996-2000 subaru impreza outback get its extra ground clearance from body spacers like the legacy outback does or does it get its extra ground clearance from the larger stock tires. 2. What are the differences between the regular imprezas and the impreza outbacks, other then the paint scheme and seat cloth if they don't have body spacers for lift. Thanks in advance
  8. both the 97 legacy gt and outback have a 4.44 4eat, but are the ratio's for 1st to 4th the same or does each model have a seperate 4.44 transmission with there own specific ratio's
  9. Just out of curiosity until theres some more answers to my original cv question. Where are all of the spacers on an outback located, other then the front and rear cross members are there ones on the transmission and rear diff also? thanks in advance

Thanks for that suggestion, but right now I don't have money for all of those parts off of an outback, I just spent $368 on the heavy duty springs and am spending some more money on new brake calipars and pads and some other repairs, so I was just wondering if the cv's and axles could take just another inch because, I can get those spring spacers for $30 for 4 and put them in easily when the springs are getting done, I think I saw a picture of the back of zapar's lifted outback sport with the swampers on it and I think the axle angle would be about that or maybe just a bit more for my legacy with the 1 inch spring spacers added in, so if he could add some comments or suggestions or anybody else thats done the supsension lift on a impreza that would be great. And if the general concensus is that they can't handle it then I might just have to start saving up for a lift kit over the the next year if nothing else breaks

I have lifted my 1995 legacy lsi with outback springs and struts and have just purchased heavyduty standard height outback springs because my old springs sag some and need to be replaced, right now my axles are operating at a semi good angle but they are nowhere near the stock horizontal position, I was wondering if i could add 1 inch rubber spring spacers when I install the new springs for more lift or would that put to much strain on the cv's and axles, or would the axles even pop out because of the angles because I think I read somewhere that a guy who lifted his legacy with outback struts plus the 2 inch lifted king springs had problems with his cv's popping out. How are the members who lifted there imprezas cv's and axles holding up because I believe you get like around 4 inches of just suspension lift or more and your axles will be operating at the same or maybe more extreme angles then mine would be. Or am I just worried about nothing, but since this is my daily driver I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered. Thanks in advance

My 1995 subaru legacy has the 4.11 auto mated to the 2.2 engine and I have outback struts and springs lifting it with 28.3 inch tires on it, the gearing is off as is the acceleration, with 4.44 gears I would be back in the stock torque curve and also improve my gas mileage, I was wondering if the 4eat out of a 1996 or 1997 legacy outback or legacy gt with 4.44 gearing would work on my car. I know that it would physically bolt up because subarus are like legos but are the sensors and transmission harnesses's etc, the same, and will it work with my 2.2 engine, since the 4.44 came only mated to the 2.5 engines. And I will also be getting the matching rear 4.44 diff. hopefully all the sensor locations on the transmissions are the same. 1. Is it a plug and play situation, can i just bolt up the new 4.44 tranny and use my old transmission harness 2. does the transmission have a computer that I would also have to get and if it does would it work properly when connected to a 2.2 engine computer, since it came connected to a 2.5 engine computer 3. I know they redesigned the 4eat in 1998 to make them more efficient and changed the filter design and a few other things, would one of the newer 4.44 autos out of the 1998 to 2000 also work or do they definately use a different harness, sensors, and sensor locations 4. If it can be done should I just use one out of a 1996 or 1997 because it would be less of a headache. 5. If it can be done can somebody list all the parts I would need for the swap Sorry for all the questions but I'm a noob when it comes to cars and trying to work and modify them and since this is my only form of transportation I want to make sure it will work before I spend my money on something and not have anyway to get around for awhile. I see people with lifted 1986-1989 body style gl wagons that run wheels with offsets that stick out up to 2 inches past the fender and their wheel bearings seem fine, haven't read any horror stories, but how are legacy wheel bearings compared to gl bearings, I have read they have problems and are weak, not as bad as forester or impreza wheel bearings. I was wondering if you lifted a legacy could you use wheels that stick out 2 inches past the fenders, or would legacy bearings not be able to take that and need to be replaced after a very short amount of time? Or will that kind of offset even tear up the wheel bearings of a gl. Any info will be greatly appreciated

I was wondering if it was possible to make a 3.9 full time awd with diff lock and dual range and if so what parts would I need to do this. would I simply have to get a 3.7 full time transmission with diff lock and dual range, then just swap in the front diff of a 3.9 and the rear diff to match, and if not, is it possible to bolt on the lower geared dualrange part of a part time 3.9 to a full time 3.7 dualrange transmission And if this can be done how difficult of a project would it be. Any info would be greatly appreciated Thanks
