  1. well, yesterday was the day to install the 5 speed. the car, an 85 GL 2wd auto hatch, ea81... the donor, an 85 4wd DR 5 speed wagon, ea82 sunday went great, modified the ea81 pedal box to accept the ea82 pedals, got the cable taken care of, got the 5 speed pulled out of the donor car and ready to go. Then yesterday, we pulled the auto, no problems, went to put the 5 speed in, Murpy showed up, we needed to jack the car up higher, and didnt notice how close the hood was to the ONLY low point in the garage, a bracket for the overhead door, bit right into the hood leaving a small dent and a large gouge, did I mention I painted the car last monday :[ Also, we had to change the mounts for the radial rods so we could use the cross member for the manual trans.. so since my axles were shot and my struts were worn out, we went ahead and pulled EVERYTHING out of the front end... bolted in an ea81 rack that had been modified to use ea82 parts, modified the strut tops to mount the ea82 struts in the hatch, ea82 control arms lined up and bolted up, but the tie rod ends were different and I still havent been able to get them off the tie rods to put the right ones on, the axles are too long :[ they are in , but they've got the tranny pushed up and back several inches, and thats with the car supported on stands and the wheels hanging, I'd had to see how high the tranny got pushed up if I let the thing down :[ Kinda funny, what was supposed to be just a tranny swap now has my engine sitting next to the car, and my front end all torn apart, LOL. And to make it funnier, its my only vehicle HAHAHAHA
  2. except I havent met John or Tom yet, looking forward to it though :] Miles, was that a clutch AND flywheel from the XT? if so all I need is gear oil for the tranny and to fix a broken stud (pivot for the 4wd lever, no big deal. I made the cable today, complete with ends and adjuster, and I took care of the pedal box, it was fun, the ea82 pedal box wouldnt work, so I wound up using the pedals out of it and making them fit the ea81 box, had to narrow the pivot "tube" for the ea82 brake pedal, used the pivot bolt from the ea82, and made mounts to hold the cable and to mount an adjustable clutch pedal "stop" to adjust its engaged position, the ea82 had one, so I figured I should have one too. Oh yeah, if you are still reading this, WTF is with the switch on the gas pedal?
  3. ok, guys/gals, from what I've seen in this group, you people are some of the finest, most generous people on the planet, you have GOT to hook her up. Noone should be without their sube.
  4. lol, those are two of the guys I was talking about, hehe
  5. theres a write up in the USRM that says for putting an ea82 DR 5 speed into an ea81 that you put the ea82 flywheel on the ea81 engine now I'm confused :\
  6. I live on the ohio/indiana line, about 2 hours or so from Indy. I know a group of guys going to columbus ohio next weekend, I'm sure they could score one down there, but I'm FLAT broke right now, and not sure when I'll have it :[ Ahh the joys of being a bum
  7. yeah shipping is scaring the bejeezus out of me washington to ohio on a part that heavy AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHhh
  8. i checked the boneyards around here, and as much as it pains me to admit it, NO subarus :[
  9. any other flywheels I can use? the one off the tranny is toast, rusted REALLY bad with VERY deep pits in it, way too bad to have it turned. I can't use the one off my engine because I dont have one, LOL, got a flex plate that wont do me any good though
  10. I've been looking all over the web and cant find a place that sells ea82 flywheels,, all I can find is outback, and impreza stuff. I need a flywheel for an 85 wagon, 5 speed dual range where should I look?
  11. I'm working on a project using an 85 ea82 5 speed.... the engine was removed before I got the donor car, as well as the clutch cable, and various brackets from what I can tell. does anyone have any pics of the throw out lever and how the clutch cable mounts ?
  12. Miles was the captain on this crazy voyage but he's disappeared
  13. sorry if this double posts , it seems the last one disappeared. anyway, I have an 85 2wd auto hatch ea81 putting in an 85 5speed dual range ea82 going to use the clutch, flywheel from the ea82 on the ea81 engine, got the tranny mount, pedal box and cable figured out, got the ea81 manual tranny flywheel bolts my confusion now is axles, I know the ea82 axles are too long, but will the ez81 DOJs fit the ea82 tranny? and if I get new axles, do I get ones for 2wd since the front end is from a 2wd car, or do I get 4wd because its a 4wd tranny? I'll save the questions for the rear end swap for later thanks everybody
  14. ask miles how bad the rockers were on my hatch and how they look now. I used parts of an ea82 rocker panel and some sheet metal, and a LOT of time with hammers and dollies, but it seems to have worked out. I agree with alleyboy by the way, welding is the more common method, but rivets work GREAT too
  15. sorry, I can't believe I left out the info, hehe 85 ea81 2wd automatic, carbed how do I check the anti diesel solenoid? what exactly am I checking for?
  16. ok, now all of the sudden my car won't idle, it will start and run smoothly IF you give it gas, but it won't idle. I can't find any vacuum leaks, anything else I should look for. I guess I could turn the idle up, but I dont want to hide the problem, I'd rather fix it
  17. solved the problem, or it solved itself, maybe coincidence. The right front tire had fix a flat in it, and I've heard lots of horror stories about it, so I tried changing that with another wheel and tire, and the problem went away. If it was the fix a flat, I can't figure why I drove it for about a week before the wobble started and then it happened suddenly. If it wasnt the fix a flat I have no idea why the wobble stopped
  18. its not the road, it started on a road I've driven down many times, and it does it everywhere. as far as the bolts, sorry for my ignorance, but do you by any chance know where I can find a picture of exactly where you are talking about, not sure which bolts you mean :[
  19. I know everyone does things differently, but personally, I prefer to run new speaker wires in every system I install.
  20. sorry, I should have been more specific, for a while is like anywhere from 500 feet to a few miles I cant find any play in the front end :[ lugs and axle nuts are secure I'll try rotating the tires
  21. any members in the KC area? just curious, I'm going to be making a trip out there pretty soon, just wondering if there are any cool soobs to see on the way
  22. my car developed a new problem, it came on suddenly, I have no idea what could have caused it, didnt hit any potholes or curbs or anything like that. At slow speeds, the steering wheel will pull back and forth , at first I thought I had a flat tire, but the tire pressures were good all the way around. After a certain speed its not as bad, but it will still pull to one side for a while, then pull to the other side for a while, then sometimes go straight for a while. what the !@#$!@$!????? if it makes any difference, its an ea81
  23. saw the kit listed for a grand, too bad no picture of it though
  24. you can also try carb cleaner, as above, try it on an inconspicuous spot first
