Woody kits for wagons?
Jack in Norfolk replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
are there any pictures of the ea 81 0r 82 woodies available? Also, Paul, were you making this gear out of real wood? While we are at it, what other graphics were available besides the Mountain Grizzly and US Ski Team packages? -
Who makes the Subaru!?
Jack in Norfolk replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That makes a lot of sense. Especially when you consider the fact that Fuji heavy machine corp came into being after the war when they could no longer build air planes (same is true of BMW and probably other car companies). The first Fuji Rabbit Scooters used landing gear wheels from air planes as thier wheels. -
Who makes the Subaru!?
Jack in Norfolk replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know exactly where the design came from or who stole what from whom. And everything written so far is speculative, but interesting. I do remember seeing somewhere on this board that the first 4wd subaru was a wagon and that it was built for the Japanese power company to be used we use our powerline trucks. To get out to remote places and fix the power. Someone had the idea to market this to the public and eventually they found their way to the states and I believe the subaru wagon has been the best selling car in the rockies and the northeast ever since. In regards to the notion that Subaru 4wd was "stolen", it is entirely possible. Another example of this is the Toyota Land Cruiser. The old ones (FJ 40 and previous) were descended from the vehicles built in occupied Japan for the allies. They were essentially told to build a Jeep and came out with something better; that is coming from a Jeep owner by the way. -
I don't think I've seen any subes with the simulated wood grain on the sides featured on this board ever. I knew a guy in high school that had an ea81 d/r wagon. It was tan with the wood panneling. I think I saw it on a gen 1 in a brochure once, but I have never seen wood on any ea81 or 82 cars on the board. Did they offer it on ea82 cars? I have seen the ski team graphics a couple of different times, and the Mtn Grizzly graphics, but no wood. Am I missing something? Was it really that rare?

This is getting better and better. I agree that the appearance should not suggest what lies beneath. There is a story around here of two brothers who worked in a body shop out in the sticks. A guy was out in his Porsche 911 one night and put it in a ditch. He was drunk and didn't want the dui so he left the car and walked to a phone to call for a ride. The car set for a while. The insurance company totalled it out. The brothers got the car for a song and fixed it up. It was an older 911 and they left it looking crappy on the outside but tweaked out the inside. They went around drag racing in that thing and surprised a lot of folks. I don't know if its true, but it makes a good story.

who's that dis'n the Justy?!
Jack in Norfolk replied to RallyJusty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To me a Justy seems like a quentessensial subaru. Because it is an underdog. When I bought my wagon in 96 and started asking around about lift kits and ways to increase hp, I got a lot of responses like "its a unibody with torsion bars; you can't lift it" or, "anything that you do to the engine, the computer will eliminate". Obviously these ideas are nonsense, but you would be surprised how many people said that kind of thing. But, there are a lot more nay sayers than fans of Subaru offroad capability in the world outside of USMB. This board has done a lot to change that. So I predict that we will see some really intersting things being done with the Justy as time goes on. Just as we have with the other subes. -
Help!! Car died today = P

Not to be a smart@ss, but I don't suppose you checked to see if the car had fuel did you? -
I was driving my girlfriend's civic the other night. We were next to a new Corvette at a stop light. For various reasons (we had been fishing a couple miles offshore all day so I was tired and maybe borderline delerious, I like to see fast cars do thier thing, I thought it would be really funny) I tried to get the guy to race. I should state for the record that this is no fast and furious rice car. The is a bone stock 1994 4 door auto civic (no vtec). I thought it must look funny to the corvette owner to have a couple next to him in thier honda revving the engine and challenging him to race. He didn't go for it. At the next light we did the same thing. Still no response. I guess it was obnoxious so I stopped. But it got me thinking, wouldn't it be fun to have a little sleeper in moments like this. I also know where an old ea81 dl 4 door saloon is that I could get for very very cheap. I am just wondering if I took everything out of it and swapped in a turbo and did a bunch of other stuff, would it be much of a sleeper. I have a few other ideas as I'm sure you guys do. I'd love to hear them. Mods: Maybe I should have put this in the "off topic" forum? -Jack

The website where I found this also had an ad for a Subaru 1000 and several variations of the 360. If anyone is interested check out fujirabbit.com/ -
Original FF1 ad

"maybe someday they will offer 4wd and we can not only get on the beach, but also be able to drive off". Oh I'm just kidding. I don't want to upset any of the vintage purists. 2wd subies are cool too. I just thought it was neat to see the ad so I put it out there. -

Insert Bad Language Here!! Over-reacting!!
Jack in Norfolk replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When my grandmother gets upset she always says "oh shucky darns!!" As I look back on some of the things my brother and cousins did to cause her to say that I realize the "shucky darns" actually means something really bad. -

ea81t 4wd coupe; how rare?
Jack in Norfolk replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You've seen all of these convertibles? Where??!! Man I must not have been paying attention or something. I have only seen a handful on line and one in Hemmings motor news. A turbo traction!!! now that would be something! Do have pics of any of these? -
ea81t 4wd coupe; how rare?
Jack in Norfolk replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
when you say a "used" 4 spd dl, do you mean that the conversion was done after the car was bought new, like the owner sent it to the coach builder? it does seem wierd to have the stripped down dl made into a convertible, but I have seen chevy cavaliers with cloth seats and hubcaps and crappy radios that were convertibles. I think they were rental cars. Who knows. -

I guess not as rare as that round headlight convertible of yours though, huh?
