Push Button vs D/R 5 SPD Tranny Q
Jack in Norfolk replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
forget the tranny, get the whole car! I haven't seen a turbo 4wd coupe around here in ages. -
What about a plymouth rampage or a vw rabbit truck? Would it be legal to put the turbo dodge omni powerplant into the rampage and race it that way? These are the type of things I am curious about. In sailboat racing everyone has a handicap and if you change certain things about the boat it affects your handicap rating. Some seeingly slow boats do real well because thye have high handicaps and are rule beaters in thier class, sort of like the Brat.

I know that some of you are very into rallying your subes. I really don't know anything about rallying as far as the rules go. I also don't know which cars make good compettitors. I love to watch rally racing on tv, and I used to love to try to drive like those guys in my 4wd d/r 86 GL wagon on the fire roads in the mountains of VA when I was at JMU. I was just looking at the pics from a rally out west. It seems to me that most of thee cars are pretty affordable. But I also couldn't help but notice that most of them, in stock form, on flat, dry pavement are faster than a stock EA sube. So, my queston is, does an ea sube stand a chance? Do you get a handicap? What sort of mods can you make and what class will that put you in? Thanks. -Jack ps, does anyone rally a wagon (not an imprezza or legacy)?

I have heard that once you get an old Mercedes 300d up to 90, it has no problem moving on up, well over 100. Its just a matter of getting it there. It isn't real quick off of the line, or even below 60, but appearently it has some top end. But then I have heard the same thing about the old 12 cylander (gas powered) jaguar XKE.

any one esle derby a subaru
Jack in Norfolk replied to 95 super subbie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What you do with them is your business I suppose. But rust doesnt' have to be the end all be all of a car. Also, if it is too rusty, you could offer the salvageable parts up for other users. There are your cars; do what you want, but you'll understand if I'm not too enthusiastic about Subarus in a demolition derby. -
choosing a subaru? help
Jack in Norfolk replied to tysn's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I second that vote. My 86 pt 4wd wagon did a great job getting me and all of my stuff to school in the Shenandoah valley and back. It was nice to have the 4wd up there in the winter. -

ea82 runs then dies and has no spark
Jack in Norfolk replied to slidewaysuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have you checked the fuel pump? I don't know the situation on subes, but on my Jeep, when it was dying, it would work intermittently. You culd start it by tapping on the bottom of the gas tank while someone cranked the key over. Just a thought. -

has anyone sent him a link to this thread? -
Suggested mods for TR7: Vertical Takeoff Ejection seat Kegerator tank treads amphibous capabilities (set up a pto off of the rear diff for a propellor drive shaft. make car float. figure out a retractable rudder. Also work navigation lights into the mix). Makeit completely stealth to radar. Consider "westphalia" type pop top camper system. That's it for now. Good luck.

Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, and Isuzu all sold light diesel trucks in the US in limited numbers. US manufacturers used Japanese powerplants in diesel light trucks as well (Chevy Luv diesel ran an isuzu motor, Ford Ranger Diesel ran a Mazda motor and the small Dodge Pickup ran a mitsubishi motor {I think} also, International Harvester offered the Scout wiht a Nissan Diesel). I don't know why nobody sells them anymore. My Grand Cherokee is available with a diesel in just about every other country in the world. The conspiracy theorist in my suspects the oil companies are influencing the manufacturers and discouraging them from selling fuel efficient 4x4s in our country, but the realist in me agrees that the American image of diesel power is largely inaccurate.

How Many Miles (EA82)?
Jack in Norfolk replied to TJeep_1999's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know, I have been called most of them by my Jeep buddies. The thing is, I beat on this thing when I first got it (that's how I Killed the first two 4.0 motors). But like I said, it says "aisin" in big letters on the tranny, just like my old tercel. -

nothing unusural about the mileage on your car. Shes good for another 100 thousand or more if you take care of it. My Jeep has 233k on the original tranny. I should note that this one year (93) Jeep bought them from Toyota. I am on my 3rd Jeep motor. Subarus are a lot more durable than Jeeps. -
Strange encounter in Bellingham

So did you go back and steal the wheels or not???? just kidding -
I would also be very interested in a biodiesel subaru.

When I was too broke to replace both broken front axles I would cruise around in rwd. Even if you dont get snow, rain might be a concern. I seem to remember my 86 wagon being really light in the rear. It didn't take much to break the back wheels loose. I know this is fun at stoplights, but it could be a safety concern.
