dude, head over to cheel lot, or the P&C lot (somewhere where they've plowed), throw it in 4wd and try to to VERY TIGHT circles. you should feel some resistance, maybe even some hopping. if you don't flip the switch and try it that way. You SHOULD feel some relief in the tranny, almost like the car is sighing if you can't get it, i'll play with it with you when i'm back in the good ol' po-dam

When i wired up my impreza, i just went to NAPA and picked up a universal 6 lamp to 4 lamp kit (less than 20 bucks), and used those blue wire splicer things (you put one in, it taps that, and you connect the other w/ it...). To install i just ripped out the trim in the back, and ran the wires behind all of it, VERY simple installation. I also keep the wire IN the car, and whened i need them i just run them out the hatch through the gasket... i store the wire bundle in the little hatch where you have access to the rear brake/reverce lights. Hope this helps! oh yeha.. if you're building your own trailer, don't wire the lights backwars on the trailer, i got some grief for that one

hey hey, i respect mudrat with the uppermost respect, i just didnt' know this was possible until that topic came up, i must say, it's been the cheapest modification to this car i've ever done, with the best outcome (well.. the lift was good too) I hope more people will find the information we came up with useful, and maybe they won't got spend $$ on something that they could do themselves very easily. I always love being the guinea pig for fun things like this, why not right? i've finnished the payments on the car, and i'm going to have it till it dies (i'm hoping for 300k ) oh well, enjoy! i need to play with it more... mm....

i wanted to get a 5 speed... but at the time i REALLY needed to get rid of the car i was trading in (so more things didn't break) so i got the auto, there wasn't a 5 speed that i liked there :-\ SO i did some more testing and have disproved the claim that in "1" (AWD) there is a 50/50 split, it runs exactly like "D" (AWD) in tight circles on pavement, but if you flip the switch while doing that, in 1, or Drive there's ALOT of resistance, and a little hopping the rear end. I also tried rock crawling up some steepish ice, first in AWD, very little throttle, just enough to get the wheels turning, it made it up but the front end slipped quite abit as the rear end cought, in 4WD mode it just walked right up, only slipping when all the wheels were on the ice, at this point i gave it a little more nut, and proceeded to spin both the front & rear, it did a sort of wierd shake/vibration at this point, i'm not sure what it was... but it just sort of shook side to side... not moving anywhere

I believe they're different, i really don't think AWD in '1' is a true 50/50 split, because if you try doing circles in a parking lot with it in '1' you don't get that pissed off hopping and bucking that you would with a true mechanical 4WD system. BUT... i'll go try it again another thing, does anyone know if your 'parking light switch' needs to work to pass inspection? the one on top of the steering column....?

So many of you may have followed the 12 page long thread in 'new gen subaru', but many of you may have ignored it. So pretty much i installed a switch on the duty solenoid c, cutting signal to it, therefore locking up the clutchpack producing a 50/50 split (front/back). I tested it out after i finnished up and it ROCKS. Circles in a parking lot it was hopping all around and pissed off due to the locked clutch pack. Pavement: (TIGHT Circles in lot) AWD: Fine, no torque bind issues or anything out of the usual 4WD: One pissed off Subaru, It was hopping and bucking all over the place. Ice/Snow: (Put the front wheels on ice, rear on snow, Floored it) AWD: Front slipped ALOT before rear powered up to get up on the ice 4WD: Front still slipped, but the rear powered right up onto the ice Ice: (up a 25deg hill covered in ice, following getting onto it) AWD: front wheels slip before rear (duh...) 4WD: spin both front & back simaltainiously. I'll run some more tests tomorrow, but it seems to be pretty hardcore Bragging: HA! i Beat Austin & Zap to get a 4x4 Impreza! :-p Just kidding guys, thanks for your insperation! (Zap, is your imp an Auto or Manual?) For the Full story of how i did it check out: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48865&page=12&pp=10 i threw up some pics for the location of the wires, etc... w00t, i can't wait to play with it more

ohhh... that's a good idea, you're a smart one! i think i'll see if i can rig that, the thing is i don't know if that switch is a single throw double pole... i guess i could rig a relay in there to make it work I'll get back to you on that one if i get it working. Edit: oh yeah, i forgot, there is not enough current coming from the TCU to do anything with... no lighting a bulb or anything, it's a VERY low current 12v signal that controls the solenoid, so i don't think a resistor would be needed... eh Edit #2: Wait a minute, if there's not much current going through, i don't need to have the resistors on there (there isn't anything currently, so i don't need the double pole switch, meaning i COULD rig it to the parking light switch WHOAH!

holy buckets Jamie or (subarugenuineparts.com) ships fast
Andyjo replied to n16ht5's topic in Products for your Subaru
w00t, Jamie rocks, i don't think i've recieved that many emails from a parts supplier... ever! she's been the MOST helpful with all my little stupid questions about parts, even identified parts via photo for me! Thanks Jamie! i'd give you some feedpack if i could figure it out! -
So here goes, the first task was to find the damn wire. I did it on my Impreza (obs), the two connections spoken of are located below the airbox, and a pain to get to. There are two connectors down there, the one we're looking for was the one in the front/drivers side (it's sort of at an angle), i used a screw driver to pop the connector off the frame and have better access to it. Then i figured out the orientation and tested pin 4 and 11, and bingo! 13ohms! pin 4 is GROUND, 11 is the solenoid. I figured out which wire was which i ran up to radio shack, and grabbed a switch, came back and dropped the wire bundle down under the car (car on ramps), there's alot more room to work down there than there is in the engine compartment. My soleniod wire (pin 11) was brown, i chopped it, and spliced 2 wires to those segments and ran that up into the car where i wired the switch up. I got a the wrong switch, but it still worked, i got a STDP (single throw, double pole), center off (oops). I wired that sucker up and gave it a go. If you start the car in 4wd mode the 'AT OIL TEMP' light will flash at you alot, so don't do that. And here are the pics! Passenger side looking at wires Drivers side, the wires The Pins Ohmage of pins 4 and 11 Splice into those wires Cover up those exposed wires mount that switch right up somewhere...

I DID IT! IT WORKS! WOOHOO!! i got pictures & everything, i'll get those up in a bit, i just spliced into the wire, threw it on a switch, did some circles in a parking lot w/ AWD, it was fine, did it w/ 4WD and man was it pissed off, hopping all over the place. I did an ice test too, the rear wheels spin out much quicker w/ 4wd on

*cough*get a subaru *cough*

MORE PICS! woohoo! Not i just need to sand it down, and give it a better coat of paint.

I agree with whoever said get a rocketbox, i took mine on my trip to TN and back, and on my midnight dash to IL and back. It'll fit everything you need plus some, I had TWO full size spares (over kill), all the fluids the car could ever need, a tent, warm stuff, caving gear (you never know..), and we still had plenty of room in the car. You can even ask Strakes' Wife, we fit ALOT of stuff in that tiny impreza, and could still see out the back!
