Thinking of buying a 78 wagon
Now, if you can come up with one of Richard Bach's biplanes, I might get interested.

Subaru...you Opinions Please
mtsmiths replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGet a Legacy, not an Outback. Much better handling as a road car, and you won't be paying the Paul Hogan premium. With 13K you should be able to get a really nice sedan or wagon. I would avoid turbos, but then that's personal bias, and knowing how much bother I'm willing to put up with (not much) for extra power that I would seldom use anyhow. We've never felt stuck for lack of power in our 2000 Legacy (Brigton) wagon and we drive a LOT of two lane mountain roads in NW Montna, Idaho, and Washington in all seasons.

'98 Outback - Rear hatch won't open
mtsmiths replied to srponies's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCarb cleaner. Stick the straw into the key slot and give it a good spray. It'll clean out all the gunk, crud, rust and/or ice. Then use a graphite/silicon spray lube and do the same thing. Also the latch handle, as was previously mentioned. Just did it on our 2000 Leg after OUR hatch wouldn't open ... it's winter. OH, go ahead and do the front doors too.

Windows sticking in cold weather
mtsmiths replied to adwolf1's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhew, back to our regular programming. Thanks mwatt, this usually isn't a problem, since our Leg is in a heated garage, but there have been times coming out of the theater or like when we find the windows frozen. I just happen to have a can of silicon spray sitting right by the garage door. I use it to spray the rotor and throat of the snowblower when throwing heavy wet snow ... helps avoid 'Tootsie Rolls' of compacted snow.

Hello yourself. This is the right place to say hi! The tech query should be posted in the "New Generation" forum. The moderator will prolly move this, but go over and repost there. Welcome.

RAM EA81 airplane part
"....so the pressure decrease on the top means the bottom is at a higher pressure and that creates lift. that simple (well, not really) principle is what lifts airplanes weighing in at 100's of thousands of pounds ...." Or, to restate the concept in it's simplest state, "the wind don't BLOW, it SUCKS. Also true of weather my friends. Admirable explanation grossgary, but my version is easier to rremember for the FAA written.

Brake Lights constantly on...
SO, did the Virgin Switch started on the '87? I didn't know that, thanks. I'm sure both our '87 GLs had it.

Brake Lights constantly on...
Are you certain it's the brake lights? Go around and look at the front, if it's your parking lights, flick the 'Virgin Switch' on the top of the steering column.Welcome to the board.

Subaru ( and other engine) TRIKES
??? What does this refer to? After doing the ground school and passing the writtens for both with presentable scores, I made two decisions. 1. I don't want to be in WX in a little airplane, no matter how it's equipped, and what rating I have in my pocket. 2. Like my old ex USAF/airline Daddy said, "Boy, airplanes are like women, they're fun to play with, but as soon as money is involved it becomes work!" It ain't the destination , for me it's the trip. I guess that's why I've owned a Luscombe, Champ, and now the Spezio.

Subaru ( and other engine) TRIKES
Lee, is that also your RV? Let's hear about that then. I'm currently rebuilding a Spezio TuHoler. Doing wiring now, and revamping the landing gear shortly (getting rid of bungees). Smitty

Coasting?
mtsmiths replied to Urban Coyote's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDitto, especially on a steep hill, all you need to do is heat up your brakes and suddenly they just f-a-d-e away. Not to say I haven't done it. And yes, if you match revs you can shift without a clutch in a pinch, just don't make a habit of it. I once lost a clutch cable in a VW Bug in Europe. I drove about twenty miles to a VW dealer to get it fixed, and the (very Teutonic) service writer informed in the severest terms that of course I must be wrong, insisting that I could NOT have driven the car without a clutch. When the technician (read mechaniuc, this was thirty years ago) diagnosed a broken clutch cable, he was actually angry with me for being right.

Hubcaps necessary?
mtsmiths replied to wallaceg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX"I just wanted to make sure the cheesy piece of plastic wasn't keeping salt and grime out of anything important."Actually, they do just the opposite, the keep salt, grime, etc. stored and protected, so it can eat away at everything (rust never sleeps). Also, they fill up with snow and throw you wheels W-A-Y out of balannce, dump, em.

Ignition Wire Change Tips? 97 Outback
mtsmiths replied to pistaguy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEverything I've read on this board says OEM wires and NGK plugs ONLY, Gap is .039 - .041, should be .040 right out of the box. It was all pretty easy in about two liesurely hours on our '00 Legacy, but then it's a Brighton, so doesn't have many accessories to remove.

Gas Mi. way down and CEL on
mtsmiths replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHmmmm, New O2 sensor = $60+ dollars (give or take). 1/2" black vinyl tape = priceless! I think I'll wait for the jury verdict. PS, how you hangin' in the weather out there? I've got friends and family all over the NorCal area from Gualala to the Sierra Crest on Hwy 50, and up and down Hwy 49. I 'spect they're all diggin' out about now, from either mud or snow.

Gas Mi. way down and CEL on
mtsmiths replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCookie, tell us if it was worth it, or shall I just leave the damn vinyl tape on (Click & Clack CEL 'fix')? OH, and also tell us if it improves you gas mileage. I don't know whether to attribute our 3-4 mpg drop to the front O2 sensor or winter gas.

Why it sucks to own a subaru.

A note on dash lights.
mtsmiths replied to sid_vicious's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDoes anyone make an LED replacement for these damthings. That would solve it once and for all. So far all our dash ligts are functional, but the console shift indicators lights are all burnt out.

cuts out when it reachs operating temp
mtsmiths replied to zzzasy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSounds just like ours. Feels like it's shutting off, but always catches and keeps going. Gotta be hard on U-joints, In fact, I think I now notice pick-up and deceleration slack in ours!

cuts out when it reachs operating temp
mtsmiths replied to zzzasy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIs it cutting clear out, than restarting itself on a regular cycle, like three to five seconds? Our 2000 Leg did that, it turned out to be the fuel ratio sensor, and a reprogram (wider range) for the ECU. Search the mtsmiths posts and you find a long and weary history, then final resolution.
