  1. Brakes are ALWAYS cheaper than transmissions (or clutches, if you're talking M/T).
  2. The general consensus (and my practice) seems to be: put it in 3 for city driving and leave it there. That will keep it from hunting and up/down shifting in traffic. Use D on the open highway to reduce rpms and save wear & tear and gas.
  3. EH Frag, iss no da Purple Jesu' make talk pidgen li'dat, iss da okolehau*! * okolehau - Hawaiian Whiskey like rum, only stronger, literally 'iron bottom', so named after the big iron pots the cane mash was cooked down in.
  4. Eh brah, you going drive da H-1 fo' one hoah, you going be lucky you get from Kaimuki to Mililani. da las' time I wen' Oahu da traffik so Pilau. An alla time get stink eye from da ricers trin' go aroun' no mattah how fas or wat lane I stay. Hawaii s'all hammajang now. I li' Montana mo bettah.
  5. I think the filter on my '95 at 135,000 is original. The '00 is at 165,000 ... and I suspect that the gas in western Montana may not be as clean as that in Germany. We've got some OLD in-ground tanks around here, and US regs are generally not as strict as EU.
  6. Thanks all, $18.00 at NAPA (looked just like the Subaru part, except painted black) and a can of Seafoam, five minutes (no fuel spray, BTW) and all's as right as rain. The best part? The Pretty One has renewed confidence in my mechanical skills.
  7. No, no, no, you don't ASK them if they WANT to keep it overnight. You TELL them they will keep it overnight and give you a loaner until they figure it out ... period. Get ahold of SOA and get your Zone Rep contact, and start making NOISE! Your state consumer protection ombudsman or atty is the next stop, and let the dealer know that.
  8. It's usually the heat shield around the cat. I removed mine and wrapped asbestos tape around the necks of the cat, then reinstalled the shields.
  9. $33.51, is this a critical Subaru part (like oil filters), I can't imagine so, but one never knows (and I don't). 'Nother thought, according to the Owners manual alcohol additive is limited to 05%. Lotsa states here out west pump 10% gasohol. Is this a pending problem? Inquiring minds want to know. It's a bother with my antique airplane, which is rated to run on MoGas, but NO alcohol.
  10. SEARCH won't work on my browser, so I'm asking a question I'm sure has been answered many times. Our Legacy is acting like it has crud in the fuel filters, so. Where are they, not even mentioned in the owners manual. Thanx all, Smitty
  11. You'll do fine with an Imp. FWIW, I bought our 2000 Legacy 2.5L/auto in Nov. of 2001, used. At 13 months of age the car had 98,500 miles on it. My wife ticked over 100K miles driving it home from Spokane. We are currently at 165,000 and have never had a problem with the car, except for one front wheel bearing (and I think that was the result of a curb kiss). We have had a total of 5 Subarus, and the '00 is by far the best, and IMHO, an auto beats a stick in snow every time, especially in combo with the Subaru AWD system. I know the 'stir my own gears' fans will give me a moderate flame job. My wife really didn't want to buy the car because it was an automatic, but after one winter, she will never have a stick again (at least while we live in snow country). If you need a tad more room, get a Forester, it's just an IMP in SUV's clothing.
  12. Sounds like a good query for Click'n'Clack, but I can hear their answer already ... "Boat Payment" (or maybe this far north, "Snow Machine Payment").
  13. They will probably total your car. Get the highest possible pay-off with you keeping the car, and fix it. You may end up with a salvage title, but on an old Soobie, who cares? BTW, rear-ended by FedEx, I would go get a medical exam to make sure you don't have a soft-tissue neck injury that may plague you in the future. Better safe than sorry, and they are going to pick up the tab.
  14. And they would STILL have told you the same thing, even if the CEL was thrown by a loose gas cap. You DO ratchet your gas cap down tight, no? You don't say (I think) year and model, or if you bought the car new or used. There was a TSB out about the O2 sensors, and they are supposed to check for free if you car hasn't responded to the TSB. And, if the sensor IS bad, replace it. That said, it will probaly throw CELs off and on for the life of the car, both ours do. We've just learned to ignore it.
  15. Well, I weigh in on the 'B' series with BLeccccchhh! I agree that GM is killing Subaru. They musta trasferred the styllists responsible for the Pontic Azpuke. I don't remember which, Car & Driver or Road & Track, has termed the new Subaru grille as the 'SNOUT', fitting IMHO. I think the bugeyes were the best style of the lot, at least they had a practical look, if a tad 'quirky, but hey so was the Original AH Sprite. The ricer taillights ... Puhleeeeze!
  16. What's your tire pressure? Most recommended tire pressures are low to improve the ride. I've increased to 38 lbs on both our Legacys and our mileage is up, our tire wear is much more even and there's no appreciable change in handling.
  17. Jeeze, Pyro, hard cheese bruddah. As for the loss of income because you can't perform your art & craft to earn a living, I have one word for you. Raku!
  18. It's finally gotten HOT in Montana (our six weeks of summer). The Pretty One's 2000 was showing a laksidaisical A/C, so I got out the kit and checked. High green ... one can brought it up to mid-blue and it started putting out actual cold air. So, the recharge kit is out, I've got a 'nother can of R134+ so I decide to check my '95. It's OK, nothing to freeze anything important off, but OK. I get a low blue reading (don't ask, I don't remember the lbs). While injecting a can it shows no increase, then shoots up to mid-yellow, no red. I twist off the t-handle and the car goes 'pooka-chuga-burp" drops from 1,500 RPM to a staggering 500, like there was a brake on the engine. A/C off alls's well. A/C on, I get a three second surge cycle (about 500 RPM) and no cold air at less than 60 mph, then a little bit but not much. What did I do? Why did I do it at so low an indicated pressure? What will it take to fix it?
  19. I predict a short continuing term of office for the Dynasty, and another, newer Subaru for the family ride.
  20. Many steering wheels have a flat area on the 'bottom' (wheel centered). This is because there are no many lardbutts in the world that they now design cars to allow room for the extra edipose tissue! Would like to 'supersize' that drive-thru order sir?
  21. Despite my constant admonition to avoid Stealerships, there ARE two exceptions in our family. Transmission service and oil changes. I find the costs to be close enough that I pay the extra to know that at least the tech knows which plug and fill tube goes where (it was hard to break my wife from going into Jiffy-Screwed with her 2000 Leg). When I finally pointed out that the Subaru dealer washes the car too, and all for only five or six bucks more, she went with it from then on. Watch the dealer service incentive sales, you'll often find full tranny service for $49.95. I figger the A/T is the car's weak link, so we don't scrimp, we do a fluid/filter change every 30,000, oil changes at 5,000. Take a bye on the offered air filters, etc.
  22. Awwww man, there goes another one! After Dad has worked on and test driven the Soobie across the Nebraska prairie, the poor kid is goinna be stuck driving the family Buick ... poor kid. Oh, welcome to the mad, mad, mad world of Subaru nutz.
