Well first let me say that I hope the best for your mom. I have been in that situation so I can empathize how difficult & stressful it is.

So my situation is that, now that I am retired, I have begun to restore my 1984 Brat, which I purchased new in '84. I am actually looking for a parts car. These have become difficult to find. I don't think that there is  too much compatibility between our models but I will investigate this further. One advantage is that I have a close friend in Albuquerque who restores old Mercedes so it would be a logistical dream to grab your car and process it there.

Let me know how much you want for the car. My cell number is 516-240-3364 if you want to discuss or text further.

  2. Fabricating a new top is worth considering. The shop I use is very good but expensive. Not too many choices around here as only a few will still "boil out" and refurbish tanks and radiators anymore. They will do this but it'll probably cost more than it's worth. I can do a fairly lousy job of fabricating patch panels when necessary so I may just take this approach. As you said, no one will ever see it until it's too late! For sure, I'd rather find a usable tank.
  3. There is one available in a junkyard in WA but they won't ship it. Never did pursue that '84 engine. How can I determine if lifters are hydraulic without taking apart the engine?
  4. As typical of myself, I got detoured away from this project but have got some momentum going now. Unfortunately, my gas tank is badly corroded on top. Tank shop would have to do major repairs to seal it up. Anyone got a tank that'll fit this car for sale?
  5. So I finally got around to uncovering this relic, pulled the spark plugs, squirted some oil in each cylinder, put a wrench on the crank pulley........and spun that sucker so easily that I almost feel that I could've done it with my bare hands. I was totally surprised. I am dropping the fuel tank to bring over to a radiator / tank shop to have it checked and boiled out. I will check and clear fuel lines (they look pretty good on the outside) while I wait for the tank to come back. Then I will try and start it up. Thanks for the encouragement.
  6. Did you move this stuff? If not, are you willing to sell off piecemeal?
  7. Just to clarify that's 2/17/21. From: support@subarupartscounter.com <support@subarupartscounter.com> Sent: Friday, February 19, 2021 11:37 AM To: Subject: Subaru Parts Counter: Order #3908 Items Shipped ORDER #3908 Hello , The following items have shipped via UPS. Your tracking number(s): Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total 721032064 Shock Absorber $102.57 2 $205.14 Subtotal: $205.14
  8. I purchased a pair on 2/17 from from this https://www.subarupartscounter.com/ (Canton CT? Are these your guys Moosens?). At the time I was told that there was only one other set of these in US inventory so you may want to act quickly. Now, can someone tell me if there are any coil springs available for these units?
  9. The original owner was me! Back in '84 purchased this for my day-to-day and then some. When you make a living driving around the metro area, stick shifts get tiresome awful fast. And since most of my leisure time was spent hauling scuba gear to boats nearby or backpacks upstate, I wasn't concerned about the performance loss or fuel economy. Just didn't want to be pumping that clutch M - F, 9-5 in the stop and go. I fully expect that since I haven't even spun this engine manually since who knows when (apprx 20 years) that I will be spending some time trying to free up the pistons. No problem. Even if I manage to get it to rotate, I retired the car with 150K plus miles and it was burning some oil at that time and so I think an overhaul is necessary. Have been researching....most key components are within reach (bearings, piston rings, valve stuff, seals and gaskets), but a lot is not. I got a line on an non-running, 1984 1.8,3AF, 152K at a local salvage yard for $350. Not sure if this warrants consideration, given the dearth of parts for this engine. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
  10. As I start to refurbish my 1984 Brat I am debating what to do about the engine. This is a DL with automatic tranny and A/C. I would prefer to overhaul but research (reality) dictates that some critical components (oil pump / oil pump rebuild kit) have gone extinct. Not sure what swap options there are. Any suggestions?
  11. Pleased to meet you Ido. Yeah, we could have a prolonged conversation on this topic but bottom line is that you and I are probably aligned in our attitudes on social media. I must admit that when Moosens provided those links earlier, I was thinking along the lines of what you're suggesting (they have minimalistic/ghost/fake accounts and only use them to look at facebook marketplace or to be able to open a link someone else texts them) Never had a compelling reason to do it before. Thanks.
  12. How obvious was that? Never considered Greyhound for shipping stuff thanks.
  13. To be honest, I didn't know about the "exodus" to Facebook. And to be honest again, I don't have a Facebook account. I was in IT for 25 years. Early on I resolved to keep my social media presence very limited. I'm sure that you probably are familiar with the most obvious reasons. Well, maybe I should relent and come over to the dark side! Not sure what Greyhound is but if it's a link or place I should know about, please share.
  14. Hey Paul - Last I checked...and that was about a year ago, the rust hadn't progressed much since I mothballed the car. That's not to say that there isn't a fair amount of rust but that's what I expect will be some of the "fun" in doing this project. Fortunately, over the years I have acquired most of the panels I will need (rockers, quarters, etc.). My doors are in sad shape but I've got them off the car and in my shed and, unless I find better, I will start doing the surgery on them to get them back in shape. Interestingly, I purchased the Brat when I got engaged and my fiancé (now wife of 35 years) really frowned on my interest in hunting (deer / rifle). My interests were shifting anyway so I gave up hunting for backpacking and scuba diving. Pushed those to the limit until the kids came along in '87. Please don't get the wrong impression of my wife, with the exception of shooting animals, she was / is cool with my excesses. Like having a 1984 Brat sitting on the driveway for 25 years! I will take the front "A" bar. Let me know whenever you have anything applicable to this model. I will certainly make the trip to Milford whenever you think it's worthwhile and safe. Regards, Larry Z
