  1. Good luck, it's probably the radiator imop, replaced mine with a generic one and now it runs real cool, If you want my '86 GL wagon 4WD 5 Spd GL EA82 1.8 (177K) you can drive out here and use it for parts, I can't even seem to give it to charity and no one is interested in it here at USMB...stilll runs great but needs an engine re-seal and a few other things..........East Coasters?????????
  2. Meeky, if I can get more off my taxes from donating this I might go that way. It's got brand new front tires, I just put brand new rear shoes on the rear and had the drums turned, exhaust is brand new from Y pipe back, Y pipe needs some spot welding where I installed a sleeve to make up for some after market imperfections. The engine has a new water pump, timing belts cam seals, but it leaks oil where the heads meet the block, hence the re-seal. Hitachi was rebuilt about 2 years ago. It flunked inspection by a nit picky dude by the same garage that has always done what work on it I couldn't do, I'm so piss*d. My son took it in for inspection instead of me so maybe that's why he cited a "loose steering column", funny there was no problem with it the year before, in addition to a leaky exhaust, rear wheel cylinder leak (residual brake cleaner fluid) and a "loose connection at the front strut and spindle"?????? They were the same guys that replaced all the bearings on that side months ago. So, I'm not dealing with garage any more to say the least. If you can deal with a leaky engine and spot weld the Y pipe this car should pass safety and emmisions, though you might not need emmissions in Ruckersville. Frame rails holes are another story. I would want more than 100 bucks for it, maybe 300, bring a set of tags and you can keep the new interstate battery in it too..........Let me know
  3. Regretfully, I must part with my 1.8 EA82 GL Wagon 4WD 5spd. I posted it in the "for sale " Forum but only got one reply. It needs an engine re-seal, some exhaust work, some front end work and some frame rail restoration. It's got 177k miles, but I dont want to throw any more $ in it as I'm now restoring a '71 VW Camper. I really hate to part with it, it's been a great car and I would prefer to see someone in the USMB family take it off my hands. My only other option is to donate it to charity, which is the reason for this posting. What is the blue book value of my SOOB?
  4. Send me an email and I'll return some pictures of mine, the '86 GL Wagon that's still in my driveway for sale or part out......I've never been able to figure out how to post pictures here but can attach plenty via email ......... Chongo . You were the only one that replied to my posting weeks ago
  5. My tags and registration expire Oct 31, can't get it re-newed without a pass on the emissions. The Soob is in my driveway and will stay there till I either get it fixed or decide to part it out....Once inside the garage I'm either gonna fix it or tear it apart.......I'm so bummed out, what a great little vehicle these Soobies R
  6. Great replies from all, thanks very much, still have yet to hear from the East Coast Bunch or am I missing something??? Looks like I'll part this one out and get me another SOOB............
  7. Ok all you East Coasters (or any of the rest of this great forum), my 86GL Wagon 4WD EA82 is on its last leg....Engine has 177k and needs a re-seal badly, timing belts, cam seals and a new water pump just months ago, but it still leaks around the heads at the block. Hitachi needs either another rebuild or a new one whatever, exhaust is real stinky. Frame rails where they curve up underneath at front suspension have major rust holes. Needs a new alternator for sure. I need to get my Y pipe re-welded, the place I ordered it from sent me one that was about 3mm short of clearing the studs on the heads so I it shortened it and had it re-welded but the guy missed a spot here and there on the sleeve so it leaks. The inspection dude that flunked me cited me for a leaky Y pipe, ok I can deal with that, leaky wheel cylinders in the rear end (funny I just replaced the rear shoes so it would pass for that and saw no leaks whatsoever, must have been all the brake cleaner I sprayed on everything) and a loose steering column, but it passed the year before with the same condition at the same place! Then this dude said "Left front strut at spindle loose" What???? I love this car to death and really enjoy being part of the SOOB bunch and met a lot of great folks at Carlisle in May and want to continue on with this wonderful band of maniacs that are enthralled with this devotion to the Subaru. What's a Soobie owner to do????
  8. My '85 Jeep Cherokee did the same stupid stuff with the vaccuum actuator, guess this was the way most car maunfacturers did the 4WD push button or move a lever deal to engage or disengage the 4WD. My '86 Wagon has the "Shift into neutral at about 15-20 MPH with the clutch in and yank the lever up for 4H or 4L" deal...boy I like it mutch better.........Good luck on the shifting dude
  9. Speakin of Penthouse Magazine my neighbor has the issue with Traci Lords as the centerfold and Vanessa Williams doing her nasty with that other model. It's quite a collectors item but is considered child pornography because of Traci's age (17).
  10. Probably lots of mold and mildew inside the area of your heater core A/C fins inside the dash.......U gotta take it apart and spray it down with cleaner you can get just for that purpose.........Good luck!!!!!! P.S. Does your drain tube drip properly after running the A/C???? If not then the line is clogged adding to the problem you now have........
  11. My '86 GL Wagon 4WD 5 spd did the same thing when exiting off the highway on a long loop and then entering a straight stretch....upon accelerating a big cloud of blue smoke would appear and then go away.......Had the Hitachi carb rebuilt and that took care of the problem.......like the carb was dumping fuel due to centrifical force around that long downward loop on the exit ramp.....hope this is another thing to consider.........
  12. BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!!!!!!!! You will really like it a whole lot. Go to the events section of this forum and look at the Carlisle Show pictures from this past May. There were a few wagons there, mine included (the brown '86 GL). 575 is a great buy........Come on up to the show next year its a real gas!!!!
  13. Awesome pictures, now I feel confident in trying this myself, as much as my '86 GL Wagon has eaten up shafts over the years....Thanks to all!!!! Carlisle RULED!!!! We need more East Coasters there next MAY!!!!!!!!
  14. I've decided to take out the A/C for various reasons 1. I never use it 2. I never should have replaced it with R134 without changing the dryer 3. It robs my old 166K mile engine of power 4. needs to come out anyway when and if I do a rebuild Any advice on removing the compressor and the different belts needed would be appreciated P.S. Carlisle RULED!!!!! Can't wait till next year!
  15. Check your ball joint seals too......If cracked and losing grease, you otta replace them....Check all suspension bushings as well......Check you rack and pinion steering boots for cracks and seperations......all this stuff comes apart at the same time so if you take it to a shop instead of doing it yourself, get it all done at the same time, will save you lots in labor. Have you figured out which side the noise is coming from??? Take a passenger with you if you're not sure and listen to the noise.....There were some really nice Brats at Carlisle PA, especially SUBARUBRAT........This man KNOWS the Brat........Check out the Meet and Greet site on this Forum and look for the "Carlisle" posting, and you'll see some great pictures of us at the show....some really nice Brats were there.......
  16. Hey Dude I have a '86 GL wagon too...My headlights have always been dim too. One day a rock hit my headlight so bad there wasn't any way it would pass upcoming inspection... A trip to my local boneyard produced a complete headlight assembly with the bulb still in it!!! It looked like it was brand new, headlight glass was crystal clear compared to the other one.....It made all the difference in the world........I think I paid 65 bucks for it......I think if the bulb seals go bad all kinds of moisture can accumulate on the inside of your headlight glass and this attracts the under the hood dirty air to get it there. You may try taking apart the entire assembly and cleaning out the inside of the glass before doing the wiring deal......also check all your headlight GROUND wires for proper connection and corrosion.........Hope this is of help
  17. If it's like my '86 GL wagon, the noise was coming from the drivers side......Loud roaring growling noise like you describe....would go away if you turn the wheel a bit in different directions.got so bad I could barely hear the radio at speeds over just about 30mph like you describe.....Make sure you get the new bearings pressed in right with new seals too......If they get pressed in cockeyed they wont last long and you'll wind up with same deal. This is what happened in my case..My local shop that did it for me prior to this recent bearing replacement set them in just a tad off and the bearings only lasted about 15K miles...Good luck!!!!
  18. Once again, the show was a blast....As I have offered, all those interested in doing some 4 wheeling, or just for the fact of getting together again for the weekend, our cabin is off Route 9 on Mission Road prior to crossing the Shennandoah headed towards Charlestown WVA. Plenty of room, sleeps about 10 comfortably on eight acres of riverfront (Jefferson County, right after Loudon County) Toss this invite around and we'll come up with a plan......Chongo Charlie
  19. Hey all, Just wanted to say how much fun we had at the Show. Who won the '63 Beetle???? Let's do the meetat my cabin for more fun under the sun to all that's interested. Scott and to all others, the zip tie worked on the DOJ, didn't spew any grease at all on the way home........COOL!!!!!!!! To all that I had the pleasure to meet, it sure was a gas...will post the photos we have as soon as I can CHONGO
  20. Ok, got my parts re-ordered from AutoPartsAuthority.com (Tuesday),all in stock, already shipped from NJ, and will get them UPS ground Thursday, not bad, and free shipping too. Will have my axels and bearings done by next weekend so looks like I'll make it for sure. May have to meet you up there early Saturday morning cause my son wants to go and doesnt get outta school till 2:30 and a few of his pals from Auto Body class want to follow us. Will bring the slaw and potatoe salad........COOL?
  21. I'm bringing my '86 4wd 5spd Wagon IF I can get my exhaust parts in and my axels and wheel berings in by the next weekend. The place I ordered the middle muffler and rear muffler still has 'em on backorder.will try another place today I'm running out of time if I cant bring my Soobie can I hook up as a driver or passenger somehow??? Scott???? do you Copy I'm in Manassas.........Chongo
  22. I'm home from work at 9:30 AM and can leave probably by 11:00 or so. Anyone close to Manassas VA let me know, best way to get to RT 15 is through the Battlefield up 234 and take 15 all the way through Gettysburg and then points beyond to Carlisle......that's the way I was gonna go......The closer you get to late afternoon traffic up there on a Friday the worse it's gonna get.Just a thought....Going through Leesburg is a pain in the butt but once you cross the Potomac it's a great cruise
  23. No Sorry , it's everything from the Y Pipe back, that is,not including the Y Pipe Cat itself. So I got the middle muffler pipe, the rear muffler, both gaskets and the springs in between the Y pipe and the middle muffler for $143 bucks. I replaced the Y Pipe Cat last year from a place called Catalytic converters.com and that price was $181.still real cheap and it came boxed so UPS wouldnt damage it during sorting............Chongo
  24. Thanks for the info.....SubaruParts.com was way too expensive.....all other part sites were about $10-15 bucks more expensive than Express Auto Parts.com. Their shipping is free for orders over $50 bucks, all orders shipped UPS ground to arrive in 2-5 business days...not bad....Am getting everything from the Y-pipe back to the tail end of the muffler with all gaskets for $143 bucks...if it lasts me another couple of years I'll be happy
  25. Can anyone direct me to a good online source for exhaust parts? I'm specifically looking for a high quality resonator pipe that's between the cat and the muffler for a '86 GL Wagon 4WD.....I'm tired of replacing this pipe every other year or so, and the muffler looks like it might last another year......This winter stuff with all the road salt is wreaking havoc on my Soob, not to mention the ever increasing rust holes on my frame........or will there be any suppliers at Carlisle that may have parts like this in stock??????
