  1. I think your lot is banking on the Impreza getting *almost* 30mpg:rolleyes:. Happens here all the time--I saw a couple original English minicars--an Austin mini and what looked like an older Morris hauled out in peoples' front yards trying to sell them off:grin:.
  2. Since it's on a lot, they'll probably want top dollar--be prepared to haggle. It is a nice car, though. I've had my 95 for a year, and after we got the maintenance caught up, it's been a peach.
  3. I'd use something a little heavier than a beer can, you can get scraps of galvanized steel from a local HVAC contractor (ductwork scraps). If the body metal isn't too bad, just rivet the corners of the patch from the outside and glop it up.
  4. BrucyWV's post reminds me of a trip I made to Pittsburgh a few years ago in my old 86 Toyota truck. It started snowing really bad and I was going about 35 on I79 since the plows hadn't gotten out yet. Somebody went flying by in a new Dodge pickup--probably going 55-60, and splattering all kinds of crap on my windows. I just kept going. Four or five miles later I saw some blue lights in the distance--surprise, surprise, that same Dodge nicely teetering on its roof. I just tooted the horn as I rolled on by.
  5. I was doing fine yesterday in the 95 legacy wagon, got to work, no problem. Coming home, I got hung up on an ice patch on an incline at an intersection--couldn't get backed up to try another run because of all the traffic! What these people were doing out in this stuff at 6:30 PM I don't know--if I hadn't been called out, I wouldn't have left the house.
  6. Not a good deal. Nothing like a good deal. I bought a 95 Legacy AWD in October in WV. Put brakes and struts on it and I don't have that much in it.
  7. Also the LUV engines went into the first couple years of S-10's. I had a '78 and a '79 longbed--my (ahem) introduction to Hitachi carbs.
  8. When I had chevy LUV's I learned alot about cross-referencing parts. Let's see--same alternator, cap and rotor, rear brake cylinders, etc. A local part's chain (Gatling's) printed all the app's on the boxes their parts came in, and they were all out in the store, no hassling somebody to look them up--I miss that.
  9. Mine is at 161,000, got it about 3 months ago--so far changed the fuel filler tube, back brakes and rotors, rear struts, and starter. Still need to do the heater control unit, but I think that's about it.
  10. I had the leaking filler tube on my 95 Legacy when I bought it--if you don't fill it past 1/4 full, you won't waste so much gas until you fix it. Thinking about it now, it's not a surprise the previous owners traded my car in--brakes and rear struts making noise, mileage falling off--they probably thought it was gonna blow up any minute.
  11. I just replaced the contacts in my 95 Legacy a couple weeks ago--cheap and easy to do, but I still had a few "non-contact" moments over a few days. Being a well seasoned Subaru driver, I took a small hammer and tapped the solenoid--then it started. Now it's been several days without a hiccup, and fingers are slowly uncrossing.
  12. I doused the buttons such as I could with contact cleaner--now they punch up like they should, but the air's still coming out the dash outlets. I can imagine the previous owners being careless with the cupholders (there were paint stains on the seats--fortunately latex). If I need to, I can get another module locally, was hoping for an easier fix, though. Any other ideas?
  13. A month into owning the new car, and the only problem left is the control module is stuck in the dash position. I've tried pushing the other buttons, which light up but don't change, and the dash button doesn't pop back out. Is there a simple solution for this, like drilling a small hole in the button and "helping" it back out, or should I just plan on changing the module--I've already found the link for that searching the forum. Thanks.

  15. The reason the blue book is that high is $3.00/gal gas--that's what the other guy's insurance co. gave me for my 93 loyale 2WD! last month. Company policy wouldn't let me buy the car back, and I couldn't find any decent EA82's either--ended up with a 95 legacy wagon, now I'm spoiled, 45 more HP and it gets the same mpg. The beauty part, the loyale was a $200 parked in the yard special--what a country!!
  16. Yeah, so far, I'd say I got lucky. Had it out for a couple hours this PM, about ten miles on the interstate and some bumper to bumper time in town--no ticks or clicks, temp stayed low, and it tracked straight. My friend had been letting me borrow another 95 wagon he had completely redone, so i've got a good idea of what one in spec is like. The interior's got a few stains and bleached spots, but I'm not going to worry about that too much--hey, she's 11 years old!
  17. Well, after almost three weeks of looking, I now have a car--a dark red 95 Legacy L AWD, auto. It was a trade in at the Subaru dealer down the street from me--my friend the mechanic found it. It needs some work, probably front brakes and rear struts right now, and some minor body work (mainly somebody was doing the hummina-hummina on the hood ). Otherwise it seems like a pretty solid wagon with 160,000 mi.--With a little luck we can get it fixed up and stay below $2000.00. This is my fifth soob, oddly enough, almost the same color as the first one.
  18. Sounds like a deal if the rusty spots are easy to fix--sounds a LOT better than $4000.00 for a touring wagon I looked at Friday. Sure, it looked nice, but not THAT nice.
  19. When I first got my 93 wagon, the blower didn't move much air--then a couple weeks later, it just quit. We pulled the blower and it was full of yarn, scraps of fabric, twigs--your typical mouse nest. We used a shop vac on the ducts and fortunately didn't find any mice. One other thing that will help with the old Japanese car smell is a few chunks of charcoal in a paper bag for a few days.
  20. Thanks for the replies--I'd rather have a 5 speed too, but my arthritic knees usually won't cooperate, oh well. I drove a couple legacys a friend had through his shop and they seemed to have just enough more power to drive like a fairly peppy car. The reviews still call them slow, but you haven't seen slow till you've driven an EA81/3AT like my first soob.
  21. Hi. I'm from the old generation side--was on my second 93 loyale when it got rear-ended a couple weeks ago. The other guy's insurance totalled it out and gave me a nice check, so I'm thinking about an early 90's Legacy, probably a wagon. I searched google images and saw that some had a straight roofline while others had a raised section like an Outback--is this just certain years, or just a certain version like a touring wagon? Also I'm going to be looking for an automatic, I know the old trannies aren't great, but is there anything I should watch out for? Thanks.

  23. If the rest of the car is good, you still did OK. I need to find one of those, since State Farm totalled out my 93 after getting rear ended a couple weeks ago and today's the last day for my POS Pontiac from Enterprise (hate to think about filling the tank up later:eek:). Luckily, a friend's going to let me use one of his spare subes for a few days, so I can keep looking, lol.
  24. Yeah, I think your buddies are razzing you--I've had four subes over the years, and I've never seen 30 mpg out of any of them. 'Course, driving in WV. is all stop and go driving--mainly because these other guys stop or won't go. I did have an 82 Honda Civic that got 30city/40+hwy but it rusted away--it was fun while it lasted.
  25. A few days ago, a guy in a Wagoneer hit the back of my 93 loyale wagon, put a nice crease across the tailgate at the level of the license plate and took out the tailight on that side. Is it possible to work a prybar into the latch and get it to open? i could just drill out the lock, but I don't want to really change anything before the insurance adjuster looks at it next wednesday. Any ideas? TIA.
