  1. turn it into an EV project.... its the perfect canidate I would if I had it! no more gas or oil!!!
  2. you should buy my brat when I am finished, it will be all rust free!! (the tailgate has a spot of rust, but its getting refinished, with an NOS tailgate trim piece too! so it will be all original 87 brat!! also has a "new" reman hitachi carb, with all intact factory emissions for the computer feedback carb... and i could deliver
  3. I think they will, as long as you use the XT6 backing plates and all the lil parts that are off the XT6... its like doing a rear disc swap isnt it? i dont know for sure, i have not done the XT6 swap myself... but I have thought about it! (for my brat!)
  4. if you wont use junkyard axles, but will consider cheap remans.. you might as well only buy the OEM axles.. i have had better luck with every junkyard axle (lasting loger than...) than the alternate parts store remans (almost every cheap reman has broken on me.. way worse than the JY axles! ) so... reccomended, if this is a restoration project.. get OEM new or reman... you cant beat the quality in my opinion...
  5. save up a lot of money..... the people that I know that have done that same thing (about 150hp out of an ea81) spent big $$ to accomplish it.. not to mention a lot of accurate measuring and professional machining of parts... it would actually be cheaper and easier to cram an EJ22 out of a liberty wagon, and then you would have MPFI too! trust me.. i did the EJ22 swap on my previous 1980 GL wagon (look here! http://usmb.net/gallery/album292 )
  6. so the other day, I was idleing in a parking lot.. and randomly the CEL comes on , and the engine starts running real lopey/rough... so i turned off the car, and waited... then started it up again and it was fine... so I took it to work the next day and scanned it with the select monitor, and it said there were no stored codes at all! has anyone had an ECU die on them to where it still operates the car, but doesnt store codes? (94 imp L awd 5spd EJ18)
  7. bummer! sorry to hear- this is not normal, nor is it going to get better.. in fact.. the more you drive it the more broke it will become! I have heard many stories about people that just keep going on them, hoping the problem will go away, but eventually they will find themselves faced with a problem of having a "no-wheel-drive" subaru! and one big towing bill sounds like a 4EAT typical problem.. you will need new transfer clutches, and the transfer clutch duty solenoid from the sounds of it.. but the most typical repair, is a MT swap! or getting a nice reman/low milage junkyard tranny replacement!
  8. the one on the back of the manifold can be plugged.. it was there for emissions things (like ASVs and such) that do not appear to be on that engine- correct on the one on the front of the carb- thats the disty advance! the one you have marked as disty advance, can be plugged, or yes.. the defrost flapper (recirculate) under dash canister goes there... but you can also (and need to) connect the tranny vac line there (use a T fitting if needed) that just supplys a vacuume that manifold seems very simple compared to the one i just finished reinstalling all the hoses and solenoids onto tonight! (87 brat, ea81, hitachi computer controlled electronic feedback carb! ) it also looks like there is a coolant leak near your disty! you should fix that soon, it will lead to bigger problems! (and in case you dont already know, dont use stop leak whatever you do!!! its worse than letting it leak!)
  9. I was riding in Carl's brat (MrCarb) and i belive I remeber waving at the cop that was behind us... he never pulled us over, just looked at us funny- a friend and I were riding out in the seats going home on a rainy day!
  10. well, the problem with installing WRX drivetrain into a brat/brumby is that the 2 cars are... different widths 4 lug/5 lug 3 bolt front struts/3 bolt rears on the WRX, and 2 bolt front and shocks+ tortion bar in the brat.... what I would reccomend... if you just want suspension only (including 5 lug hubs so you can use all the cool wheels out there) redrill your strut towers to accept the 3 bolt strut tops (unless you can change the strut top to the 2 bolt from the EA81 body onto the WRX struts) using XT6 (5 lug) hubs for front and rear (so that the WRX front struts bolt at the carriers) custom axles for the front- probably need to order these online- ask for halfshafts with XT6 CV (outer) axle end, EA81 (brat) axle shaft and DOJ (inner) so you get the right length... I have not done this conversion, but this is the jist of it- check in other threads for XT6 5 lug swap for more info relating to this topic
  11. I have passed 2 cars here with gutted cats... one ea81+weber carb, and one turbo MPFI ea82... they dont do a visual inspection here... at least they never have for me... just a sniff test.. and a dyno run (2wd mode only)
  12. http://usmb.net/gallery/album118 enjoy!
  13. I have a complete SPFI manifold and parts that go with it I could ship out to you. see this thread- http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34090 (and dont worry, I can get more of them too from the J/Y if someone else buys it and your still interested) let me know if interested, but shipping may be a little more to Austrailia-
  14. interesting.. but check to see if its only the FWD tranny... i have an EJ18 AWD impreza- and its a 5mt also... '94.... this could be a nice suprise for those who want an EJ AWD conversion.. but hey.. FWD works too!
  15. samo- you also accidently left one of your fine flatbladed screw drivers in my imp from the stereo install.. and i also discovered i need to solder those big 4awg connectors at the amp, they popped out on me!!! i am here in the evenings- or weekends.. just IM me on aim!
  16. well, I always seem to follow in the footsteps of my hero- so heres my new mods! forester struts, and rally tires! and... best of all.. bling bling spray-on-gold!
  17. ahh, but you see, the cost of kWhr for 240vac is cheaper than gas of any kind... not to mention, per 100ish miles that i dont even drive in a day except on longer trips, I have to recharge myself anyways! (sleeping) which means that if I use it as I intend it, (work commuter, grocery getter, etc) i will only have to charge it when I sleep or park it.. which is a lot of the time. so the charging part is not a big deal! not to mention the idea of dragging a small biodeisel generator with me might be a good idea too.. this company makes generators for this purpose! http://www.fisherelectric.com/f_electric_vehicle_tech.htm I also found some sweet fast-EV stuff here!! like an 12 second 1/4 mi RX7 using pure electric drive! http://www.suckamps.com/ more WA located EV parts!! with an online store! http://www.evparts.com/firstpage.php and no, this is NOT april fools.. I really am considering this.. in fact, if I can figure out the $$ issue, the gas engine would already be pulled out of the brat and it would be stripped for battery and wiring prep! and.. if I want the subaru sound, I could record my favorite subarus, and play them back on the stereo!
  18. well, as an addition to the EV conversion, one popular thing is to tow a trailer behind (or use the bed of the brat!) and have a small generator "range extender" trailer... a small desiel/gas generator that keeps it chargin' while you drive!
  19. well, the idea of my brat is not to offroad it, especially with 1000+lbs of batteries onboard...
  20. I have been considering making an electric vehicle for a few years now, and didnt really consider it seriously untill now.. with fuel prices going the way they are.. and the price and availability of EA engine parts, the reliability and such.. it just makes more sense to have an electric powered car.. not to mention, electronics is what I would rather work with than a gas engine... no oil, no coolant no gas! only ohms law and math! (well, and a lot of Li-Ion/NiMH or Lead Acid batteries some high voltage controllers, and a wall plug!) I have been looking at the current available kits for EV conversions, some companys make generic kits for particular vehicle weights and power requirements. there is also DC or AC kits, regenerative braking (like compression braking, but it recharges the batteries when you slow down) there are also kits available for particular cars- like VW rabbits, or porche 914s... the AC kits are more expensive but are more efficient.. the DC kits are more affordable but less efficient. but still waaaayyyy more efficicent than gas engines... I have a few links for parts needed for the conversions, like electric motors and batteries.. and speed controls and chargers.... I am aiming for a 120V DC regenerative system, which will probably cost around 6 or 7 thousand for the parts needed... the good things once complete, the usability- approxametly 100 miles per charge range.. around 80 mph top speed! (thats faster than the EA81!!) no oil changes (except gear oil every 15k or 30k) no fuel! (unless I build a range extending trailer) no need to tune carbs/ clean parts! NO emissions testing ever!!! (zero emissions!!) i think there is some sort of tax break or legal benifit to use and EV? higher acceleration and top speed than an EA81 but... its expensive, and I will need to have an adaptor plate made to fit the tranny.. and a flywheel adaptor for the electric motor to accept the ea81 flywheel. how does this sound? would anyone else want to have an electric car made? (converted) i would like to do this, but funding is in short supply, but I think with enough people chipping in, if some people have the money but not the know-how, or..? (i could sell the brat all restored with the EA81 and use that money to buy a deceased ea82 with a nice body and make it electric!) I hope this is making sense, cause I feel like I am just rambling on and on! links to *some* (not many!) of the EV sites I have found this first one has a lot of parts to do the conversion- http://www.kta-ev.com/catalog/index.html http://www.electroauto.com/ http://www.ev-america.com/ http://www.uqm.com/ http://jerryrig.com/convert/step6.html this one is cool.. the fast stuff! http://www.acpropulsion.com/tzero_pages/tzero_home.htm here is the AC drive system... http://www.acpropulsion.com/Products/AC_150.htm (somewhere on this page, it states that the efficiency of a good running gas car is about 20% eff. where, the AC driven EV would run at about 86% eff. under load, and 91% peak eff.!!!) I have also considered doing this as collage material, but I dont know how it applys, or where to go to put this to good use..? any more ideas?
  21. I got a set of 3.5 '98 forester struts.. (one of them was bad, so i only got the RR spring and strut top...) so what is it I need to do to them before I can bolt them onto my impreza L wagon? do I use my imps rear springs, or tops, or.. ? which also means I am looking for a RR forester strut (just the strut.. needs to be used but not broken!)
  22. sounds like fun!! I will see if I can make it.. i just got my struts in the mail, so i need to install them now.. and i need to get a skid plate too.. :-\
  23. also try looking on http://www.nasioc.com , which is specifically an impreza board! the conversion is a lot of work but its do-able... best thing to do if find a wrecked car with the internals you want, that way all your engine and electronic parts will match up and you will also have most of the parts needed.. finding a impreza wrx parts car rather than a legacy turbo would help too, all the parts will fit better seeming as how you have an impreza...
  24. call the parts department at Carter Subaru (in Seattle,WA), and you could probably get them pretty cheap there too... I know they ship all around the world and gaskets should be pretty cheap to send to canada... just my 2¢
  25. http://usmb.net/gallery/album318 some before and after pics in here of some of the progress on the imp..
