  1. yeah.. waaaaayyy different.. BUT... you can (with mods) put the whole EJ22 (or other EJ engines) into an EA car.. makes for a better result too! my first conversion car worked quite well. noah has it now-
  2. I dont remember the name of the owner.. (sorry) but i remember the car.. it is the lifted hatch-brat (black one, with the chopped top) you came on the evans creek trip back in 10/17/04! parked outside of the carwash place off the second exit... i was up making a delivery to a body shop on 2nd... if i had more time, i would have stopped in.. but the day was runnin out!
  3. i actually need to take mine in now too.. especially after I reinstalled ALL the emissions hardware and hoses, AND a reman'ed carb!! (should make a difference right? ) sounds like you may have gotten yours a bunch closer! good luck!
  4. your linkage is binding up and forcing it out of 4 low (underneath the shift boot, not under the car) you could bend the linkage enough to make it stop doing this.. or, once in reverse, pull the lever back up for low range...
  5. Muahahhhah!!! and I have 2 in my garage UNOPENED OEM NOS!!!! BTW, there are only ****3**** left in the US in stock with subaru dealers... at least last time i checked...
  6. I agree!!! its a trade off though, there are more wires to deal with on the EJ engines, and more hoses on the EAs! but wires dont go bad or leak as easily... usually... and they are more colorful!!
  7. yep! it keeps things out... like wrenches, bolts, fingers, small animals the metal objects that could fit down there could cause big problems if they get stuck in there.. like if a wrench gets lodged in there at the wrong spot.. your engine may have problems spinning! if it stays on there, keep it on there till you need it off! if its crusty and likes to pop off on its own, then dont worry about keeping it
  8. the sound your hearing is the turbo bearing worn out, and the shaft is loose in the bearing.. its ocillating when it hits a certain speed (turbine rpms) which also means you are probably dumping oil into your intake which is choaking up the motor.. take off the turbo intake plentum, and see if there is a lot of oil in there on your throttle plate and such.. replace turbo with EA82 T unit and piping is an upgrade, but you will be without a car for a while, and it also sounds like your ECU does not work properly either (Mr Carbs turbo is broken in the similar way too)
  9. $400 for 4 of them, or $400 each wheel? I dont think i saw it specified there? (or i am too tired, and missed the memo )
  10. well, i dont have it anymore.. but before i was old enough to drive (by about one year!!) my dad sold this before i was able to own a car!!! 1969/1970? sambar delux van it ran, all electronics worked.. it even drove.. barely.. needed tranny work (2nd and 3rd were frozen, could not use those gears) clutch was about gone.. and there were no break lines.. but the body and interior was niiiiice
  11. there are a few differences... 80-82 EA81 heads have smaller valves, solid lifters, and they have 2 extra bolts down below the valve covers that bolt the head to the block. (they are reallllllly small and pretty much usless.. probably were there for extra brackets or something.) 83 and 84 they changed the EA81, got rid of the little bolts, and i belive the valves were larger. still used solid lifters.. ***except*** A/T subarus had hydro lifters before '85, after 85 (Brat, and hatchback only in the US, till 87 and 89) they used hydro lifters in all EA81s and big valves (not 100% sure on the accuracy of this info- but its what I have learned over the time i have been tinkering with these very engines and reading up on them in the various shop manuals) as for brake rotors, they should be interchangeable for all EA81 modles.. you may need to keep the particular calipers+mounts with the respected rotor types (sold rotor with solid caliper parts, and such) but i have been able to swap them out for one another... (good to keep them the same for both sides of the car too!) another cool thing- rear disc breaks from all EA82 Turbo cars (4wd or 2wd) will bolt onto any EA81 rear arms.. assuming you grab all the parts from it. backing plates, caliper mounts, disc. (this replaces drums woohoo!) and you dont have to worry about proportioning valve stuff, brakes on a subaru are cross connected (RR+LF/LR+RF)
  12. thats calebs house!!! hahah ive wondered where he went off to...
  13. so here is the big question.... when/how and if... can we get some AWD D/Rs shipped to the US? put me on the list! unless.. the EA D/R setup is cheaper than the shipping+tranny? all I know, i need an LSD and a low range!
  14. yep... I belive thats what Noah is putting them on?
  15. yep! use the legacy tops for the rear, and the rest should all bolt in as is...
  16. hmmm.. sounds like possible fun... does this mean I should drive my impreza out rather than ride my bike? (hows the weather anyways along the I-90 and I-94 corridor?)
  17. the forester struts I put on my impreza wagon, make it ride like a forester! now you can run a 26.6" OD tire... look at Zap's OBS tires on the XT6 wheels! those are beefy my setup- forester strut and spring set, front strut assemblys install directly onto impreza, rears need to have the strut top changed to the impreza top (the spacing of the 3 bolts is different) install and align!
  18. well, I will be in town again, the weekend of the 14th of may... and I think I will be taking a little stroll around to try and gather some more info, maybe talk to some places of hire.... and then I will be also taking a peek at some apartments and such...
  19. I actually chopped up the origional mounts on the A bar, then re-welded them to the bar at a different spot.. the rear mount is using the swaybar inner bolts (attached to the X member) and the front mounts are using 12x1.25 bolts with captive nuts I attached to little extensions on the sides of the A bar, wich screw thru the tow hooks using big washers to keep it all in there.
  20. oh my.... that is soooo funny!! (because I know what you mean!!) dont worry.. got those parts covered!
  21. I know there is a bunch of you guys out in the Minneapolis area... and I am thinking of moving out there around the end of summer if I can (late august?) and it will only be for about a year.. anyone know of any subaru related jobs out there that would pay enough? (ive got good things on my resumé due to working at carter) or other job ideas? anyone looking for a roommate or know of any cheap apartments? throw some ideas at me!
  22. painted!!! how does this look now? not too flashy..
  23. I mounted it as close as I could, so that it doesnt kill the approach, but it actually saves the bumper! I would like ti find some beefy metal to bolt to the bottom of it, as a skid plate now... got any leads on metal? I was thinking about boeing surplus... they have both titainum, and misc forms of "diamond plate" sheets for pretty cheap usually.. also the paint thing.. dont worry.. I will work on that soon
  24. a little EA-on-EJ modding...
  25. I used the impact gun and lots of washers.. and after that, i used a breaker bar and a 2' long 1/2" drive extension (to get leverage outside of the fender) and I cranked down on those top bolts.. all the squeaking/ratteling stopped but, i figured i would never remove them again
