240,000 Mile Service
Ratty2Austin replied to axgutt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXdont worry about the timing belt too much.. they can and have one some cars, lasted over 100k each belt.. and, you have the last of the non-interference EJ22s... so if it breaks, no problem (except for a car that wont start till the new belt is reinstalled) while your in the belt area, do the oil pump reseal (front crank, O ring, 3-bond) do the cam seals and O rings both sides, water pump+hoses+Tstat, and yes.. the idler pullys and tentioner would be good too) it will keep going, if you keep up the good maintenence- sounds like you have a good canadate for the 400k+ club! (as soon as you get there )

4" Suspension Lift on an OBS?!?!
CVs.. maybe.. after a lot of driving rough.. bearings, not any more than without a lift.. (the only thing that will kill the bearings, will be mud, sand and water)

PAP update
did it look like the front hubs were still on the legacy? Sparkster needs a good bearing assembly for his wagon (cheaper and a good temp fix for bad wheel bearings)

Taking a long trip... any advice?
Ratty2Austin replied to adwolf1's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXif it passes a breif inspection of the major saftey related parts, I would say just carry the above mentioned, and have a good trip!! (check on it every time you stop for gas too... fluids, tire pressure, ect..) I am also moving, this july, from WA to MN.. towing a trailer! (yes, towing with my impreza)

CEL and misfires
Ratty2Austin replied to JohnVT's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwhen the CEL comes on, the ECU goes into a default mode.. clean your AIC valve (thingy attached to the throttle body) it gets gummed up and can stick.. which can cause it to idle too high, or too low.. and the computer defaults and kills one cyl, (misfire) to keep it from possibly overreving this is what they told me, when I was checking my impreza, having the same problem (misfire) sense it runs fine some of the time... the codes can be reset by computer, but you will have to take it to someone who has a Subaru Select Monitor, or a ODBII scan tool if you can have someone (autozone does this for free) pull the codes, that will help determine the problem

Someone drilled holes in my exhuast pipe.
my old XT turbo had that similar problem... although nobody drilled holes in the pipe, the gasket and pipe came apart at the bottom of the downpipe! i took it apart and found there was cat material all down the midpipe.. scraped it out with a coat hangar, and it was as good as a real straight pipe!!! wooooooowwweeeee!! (faster)

93 Legacy, wheel bearing replacement, how? quick Q!!
just a quick question, I havent done a legacy front wheel bearing, but if they are similar to the EA wheel bearings, then I can do it.. so is the process the same? or do the bearings fit in there different? need to know soon if possible, trying to save sparky some $$ for the trip!! thanks a bunch!!

ok ok.. very rough estimates.. I might be just a little excited to actually do math right now sorry for the confusion but yes.. the 1st I leave on.. so I guess that makes it ~about~ 3 weeks right?? from today? hmm anywho.. about the apartment- umm.. this one in excelsior you speak of.. whats the name of it.. I just turned in an apartment app to a place that was a little cheap.. hopefully not the craphole you speak of.. but oh well. if its cheap, who cares right?

moving!! Excelsior, MN or bust! *update!*leaving 6/26!!!*
less than 3 weeks now.. I leave on the 1st, after sparkster gets off work, we hit I-90!! however.. I still have things to sell here, things to give away (yes, free subaru parts) you will need to drop by to get them though!! this weekend (11th and 12th) will be the Brierwood (in Brier, WA) neighborhood garage sale.. I am taking all my things there, if you have "claimed" something on my previous posts, but have not picked it up or pai for it.. now would be a good time, because its going to the garage sale... whatever I have left, I will probably be having a major moving sale next weekend.. (all has to be gone then, as I am leaving that week!!!)

EA 81 Turbo - Timing gears ever jump?
well, conclusions maybe jumped to.. but one thing is sure.. if your car runs at all or did at any time, i dont think its possible for a timing gear to jump.. if it did, that would mean there is some major damage in there..... you probably still have the disty in the wrong spot.. it happens to me all the time.. have you checked it with a timing light? (there are marks on the flywheel-) if you still have this problem in July sometime, I could come take a look at it, as I am moving to MSP area in the first week of July

daily driver lifted subarus?
the impreza is sorta lifted and its my daily... but when i had my previous lifted wagons.. (and hatch) I drove them as my daily! and the lifted hatch (the 81camohatch) was a pizza driver as well as an only car! and it was beat!! both the yellow wagon and my 83 lifted wagon (the light bar on top) had no sway bars, and they were fine everywhere i went! i have been thinking of removing my sway bar in the front of the imp.. to see how it handles then... it pushes around corners now...

ej15 octane?
Ratty2Austin replied to Ross's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI dont think they do.. I dont run anything but the cheap stuff in my impreza (mine is EJ18 USDM version) no pinging, and I even ran 85 octane in it when i was driving cross country (higher elev, they have lower octane available) and it still got 31mpg you could try running the low stuff in there.. if it pings, try the next higher octane, if it pings with the higher stuff, check your timing (did I hear somewhere that the EJ15s have a disty? i could be mistaken)

Some cool XT6 photos
it is very nice.. i have also seen that one in person... I also know the plans for the STi stuff, for I have seen and inquired about those components as well! (darn those 05 wheels being different than 5x100! ) red one starting to look good too, is it a new project?

Sparkster: the "Hornet2" legacy
passed my imspection.. needs wheel bearing, and valve cover gaskets.. and an oil change but a nice legacy for Sparkster!! yay for cameraphone (excuse the image lack-of-quality)

Intermittent Tachometer
its the distributor bearings... when they get loose (check for even the slightest play) they can get too close to the pickups, and/or the rotor can contact the cap contacts.. when this happens, it generates a large EMI pulse, wich interferes with the tach pickup- i suggest fixing it soon, a bad bearing in an old EA81 of mine seized up and stripped the teeth off the cam gear inside the block!

howdy fellow subaru lovers
if you drove the car with the heater on, and it did not overheat, that is the indicator that your radiator is not dispursing enough heat.. (the heater core is taking up the slack that the radiator cant handle..) replace the radiator with a new one, or preferably a 2 row from a turbo wagon (better cooling) for hot weather, some people like using 185 deg, or 165 deg thermostats (stock=195) to make it run slightly cooler.. and also make sure you are running coolant, and not plain water- the waters boiling temp is ~212º water+coolant is around 245 or more? (see the containter for the temp) but either way.. water wont work in most cases, it boils too low, and creates steam wich can blow HGs (it happened to me!)

It's alive! Pics of 80 DL hatch. 56k warning!
WOW dont repaint it!! that is the best paint i have seen on a subaru, as far as color changing paint!! the only reason i never painted any of mine that color, was the paint is soooooooooooooooooooo expensive!!!! thats the most costly paint there is i belive! good job on fixin it! hope you have fun!

moving!! Excelsior, MN or bust! *update!*leaving 6/26!!!*
probable departure date set now.. July 1st!!! a friday, we should be all heading out on the road towards MN... caravan so far- Me, in the impreza (or the bike if I cant get a trailer, which means second driver needed if no trailer either) Sparkster- in the wagon he is trying to buy? my Brat, if not sold.. will be carrying the bike and I would need a driver for the imp. I wonder how much time i should get between my last planned day of work and the time that I leave? no days? 1 to 3 days? a week? how much time does it take to load a couple cars, a trailer, and pack boxes?

How fast can your lifted Ru go?
heh... i pegged the speedo in that same yellow wagon, when it had the EA81 in it... with slightly smaller tires (like.. 25.5 inch) the sad thing is, i topped out the impreza wagon, at about 95 or so too...
-
How fast can your lifted Ru go?
well, when i was driving the EJ22 lifted '80 wagon, with the 27" bfg all terrains, i think i got it up to about 100 actual speed.. (speedo was pegged at 85)

I am just going out on my adventure/school and such.. then I will be back! besides, I will probably be here to "visit" each summer if I can afford it... (and to get my stuff too!!) an evans meet sounds good! as long as I dont break my impreza too much

moving!! Excelsior, MN or bust! *update!*leaving 6/26!!!*
aiming for the Minneapolis area, will be searching for a job, and a place to live for one year before moving again to wherever... move out date not set yet, hoping for the first week in july.. (i think this will make me miss the subaru show!! ) so I need to finish clearing house.. got lots of parts still to ... give away... tools to sell, toys and computers too... moving sale will be soon, but always here too if you want to stop in and see what i need to liquidate! I will be looking for a hitch for the impreza, and a small util trailer, one large enough to haul my motorcycle, and some large tool boxes, and my junk.. (lots of small boxes) anyone got one to sell? any soob guys in MN need a room mate to share rent? know of any places hiring? it would help me out a lot if there is! thanks a bunch ahead of time

paint ideas for Hass's XT (Dave)
playing around with some prismacolor colred pencils last night to make the rough ideas, then finalizing with Freehand (vectoring art program) came up with this idea for a paint job, using the colors of paint Dave has already in hand.. (yellow, blue, black) using real automotive enamels of course.. what do ya think? too "ricey" or does it work for the XT.... (ignore the dirty white, it was an old picture, and we have white paint to fix those parts too.. there will probably be black trim striping outlining the colors as well, decided of course, after he paints the colors on...
