97 legacy wagon--stalls

Featured Replies

Hey I have a friends 97 legacy wagon/auto. When you start it up cold and drive it there is a hesitation and when you come to a stop it occasionally stalls. On restart the AT oil temp light flashes a couple times and goes out. After it warms up it runs a little rough at idle and lower rpms roughness goes away as the rpms increase. Seems like more than one problem to me. Throttle body? fuel injector? water temp sensor? Haven't torn into it yet. Just wanted to see if anyone had run into this scenario. Thanks

Could be the temp sensor. Cleaning the IAC is always a good idea. If it has not had normal maintenance (plugs wires air cleaner) do those as well.

If it's a sensor cam or crank it should be setting a code and the CEL would be on.

the AT Temp light blinking at start up means there was an electrical problem with the trans the last time you ran the car. usually this means on of the solenoids in the trans isn't working, but some one recently posted, i think, that the the throttle position sensor can also cause this.

i don't know, but logic would suggest the that the TPS being off / bad could cause rough idle??

just a thought.

Yes, the TCM monitors and can output trouble codes for solenoids, certain data from the ECM, engine and vehicle speed sensors, the ATF temp sensor, and the TPS (plus a few other things, depending on model). Reading any trans code that was triggered could help with the diagnosis.

I agree with the suggestion of cleaning the Idle Air control. this can be done by removing the big hose and spraying it with??? (check the search feature and see what is most used) I know what I use but they may be something better.
