5 speed into EA81 wagon

Featured Replies

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be able to go up to pull and save and pickup parts for a 5 speed swap.

From what I understand I will need:

5 speed DR transmission

5 speed linkages

two piece driveshaft with carrier bearing

EA82 flywheel

EA82 clutch/PP

Then for the install I just need to bash the tunnel(where?) and install the carrier bearing.

Anyone have any pics of where to bash the tunnel for clearance? Also is there anything else I missed?

If you have an EA81 with a 225mm clutch already you can keep your flywheel and just put 4 to 6mm spacing washers between your starter motor and gearbox.

Then just use the EA82 friction plate in the EA81 flywheel and pressure plate.

Only the '85/'86 EA82 disc will fit in the EA81 PP opening. It has to have the small, round center spring section to fit. The '87+ discs have a sqaured-off spring section that doesn't fit at all.

If you want to make the trip over the mountains to Missoula, I have a 5 spd. DR trans, the flywheel, shifter linkages, and the driveshaft you are looking for in a parts car. Let me know if you're interested.

You will need to either make a set of mounts or cut the ea81 and ea82 mounts apart and reweld them together. Also may need to grind down the lower part of the engine block where the inspection plate bolts up to.

Eventually I plan to put an EJ the car.So would I prefer that some of the mods mesh well with each other. So I was thinking of useing the EA82 clutch/PP/disk and flywheel.

However I have found out that the bolt holes on the EA82 flywheel are slightly larger than the bolts for the EA81.What can be done there to make sure they are tight?

Nothing need be done about it. Eyeball the bolts to the center of the holes and lock them down. Use blue loctite. The crank and flywheel are C flanged for centering. The holes being a bit large will not affect it in the least.

I have a d/r 5 spd in my brat and didn't have any problem with the larger holes in the flywheel.

The EA82 presusre plate bolts right onto the EA81 Flywheeel.

Keep you're EA81 Flywheel and use EA82 PP and Disc.

That's true but the step on the flywheel is different so you have to have it machined to EA82 specs or there is a possibility that it won't grab very well.
