Electric vs Clutch

Featured Replies

Ok so, i took off the dead electric fan today and have just the clutch type one from the AC unit. I was curious of the offroaders prefer this type of fan since it wouldnt fail buy getting wet. Or if anyone could recomend a aftermarket fan that fits into that compartment. You can pick up some 14 or 16 inch electric fans for 33bucks or less.

if you're going into water. you need to be able to disable your fan. so no, offroaders don't prefer mechanical fans. the extra resistance from the water will bend the plastic fan blades.....right into your radiator.

a fan also throws water/mud around the engine bay.

the belts do a pretty good job of flinging mud/water as well..

mazda protege's,626's,and 323's had killer small electric fans.i never ever had any probs with mine.

and they only cost about 5 bucks at the yard.cheers, brain

Clutch Fans under water also increase load on the engine which reduces the HP that makes it to your wheels and in the end you're car ends up stalled in a creek or a hole somewhere.

twin electric fans on a switch cannot be beat.

I use both.

I have the factory one plus I'm using the AC fan off another Subie as a backup fan.

The AC fan fits because it's Subaru. All the holes are in the right place.

The wiring harness is already there. I use a switch to turn it on & off.

Go get a junkyard Subie AC fan and install it on the other side or the rad.

Heres something that might be beneficial for the offroader. If you see you are going into a mud pit or a water hole and you had your electric fan on a toggle switch you could just kill it until you were out that way you dont mess up the fins. Or am i alittle late on this thinking.:)

your late......cheers, brian
