is there any aftermarket stereo option available for an '86 GL that won't stick out of the dash? the one that's in there now doesn't work, but the hole isn't seep enough for most applications.

Short answer: No.

 

Any standard DIN stereo will stick out about an inch, which is why the install kits have the spacer included. The only way you could fit a stereo in the stock space would be to get one that doesnt have a CD/tape player internally, or have one custom made by a Custom component shop (big $$$). The second option is done by some custom/street rod folks.

Using metra kit part number 99-8900 a standard din fits quite well into any ea82. still some pains wiring it all though. Here's a good write-up.

mine has a kenwood with a removeable face that sticks out less then a inch it really does not look bad. other then my dash being light blue and the face being black you almost would think it came there. Besides having a CD player is so worth it. besides allmost all the other knobs are black anyway..

yup. It looks fine with the black and black stereo. although if a person cared enough they could paint it.

If you check http://www.crutchfield.com, i think if you look for "E" sized decks, they will not stick out. then go on the internet and find the deck cheaper. I think alot of European micro sized cars have this size

where mine sticks out, I wrapped it in black electrical tape so you can't see the metal.
