Exhaust on a 86 ea82 gl wagon

I was just curious what you guys had done as far as exhaust systems on your ea82's. I want something that sounds kinda loud, but doesn't rob me of any of the little power that I already have. I'm not really sure how the whole exhaust system operates so any tips or just what you did would be cool.

Cut off the muffler and replace it with a straight pipe. Best bang for your buck.

 

There isn't much point in trying to optimize the exhaust flow on a sub-100 HP engine. Just lose the muffler and it will sound plenty beefy. Might even gain 1/2 HP.

due to the head design there is almost no benefit from bigger exhaust. If you must go bigger don't go over 2 inch. Bigger is not better in the case of an N/A EA82

Ive heard keep the muffler but get rid of the midpipe. That accounts for a more throatier sound but not so annoying.

I have an 87' GL Wagon 4x4, EA-82 with dual exhaust. 2" pipe, a crossover about midway back for pressure equalization, then exits right in front of each rear tire. It has a really nice deep sound. Oh yeah, with 2 like 18" glass packs.

Whatever you do, don't change the stock header. It's pretty well tuned to the engine and if you change it you will likely lose the scavenging properties - you can gain on the high end but lose torque on the low end if you lose your scavenging.

My lifted wagon has an allmost identical setup as crooner's minus the tip resonators, wich does make a much different sound.

 

The tip resonators were added to keep the valume down :lol:.

I like to install a cherry bomb to the y pipe flange, and 1/34 to the rear diff and a 2" turnout to the side

 

this is what i had on my sedan

 

the best practical use was on my 87 fwd wagon, i cut out a section of the mid pipe and installed the cherry bomb. I then used the leftover pipe to replace the muffler itself, and welded on a rebar piece to mount it up

 

my favorite is open y pipe, but you lose low end grunt, but sounds cool:grin:

I had a cat-back straight pipe, it was very loud. It sounded cool, but got annoying on the freeway.

So whats the deal of "unequal headers" to get the subaru boxer rumble? Is it even possible of the older ea's? I would love to make my ea81 sound better(love the subie boxer sound), but not obnoxiously loud.

Straight pipe it. You will get that rumble. It's defiantly cool, but also loud.

Yeah My ea 82 has straight pipe duel exhaust and its only loud when I get on it, but it also has a deep throaty sound.

I miss that car, sounds so smoooooth. IMO the best exhuast i have personally heard on a subie yet.
