brat tranny stuck in 4th

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have an '84 brat with a 4 speed manual trans. It would occasionally get stuck in 4th gear if I parked it that way and sometimes it would stick at a stoplight if I didnt shift before I stopped moving.

Well now last nite I put it into 4th accidentally when I parked it and now it wont come out!!!

Anyone with any helpfull info would be much appreciated.

Thanx

wow thats kinda weird..

Something is binding up inside the tranny I think..

Check your gear oil (tranny fluid) for metal chunks.

Mine has done that before. If you can roll in either direction try that. If not, you may want to try raising the front to take pressure off of the drive train. If neither works try starting it and attempting to move it. It will probably try to die but just give it a little more gas to keep it running. Then put the clutch in and try to force it out. It may take a few attempts but one of these should work.

Not to want to overlook the obvious,

does your clutch pedal only have an inch or less of free play??

Is you shifter so sloppy it's a broom stick in a bucket?

I have the same problem with my 84 wagon. I have plenty of clutch pedal. It will work just fine at higher speed and down shifting but if i stop or are going slow with it in fourth it is stuck.

My Brat does that sometimes - just slip the clutch and get it rolling a few feet. Should be able to get it to come out. The gears are worn, and are binding a bit inside the tranny. Don't force it too hard or you could break off the shift fork inside the tranny.

Add me to the list of people who's had a tranny stick in 4th if not disengaged before coming to a stop--my blue '84 GL did that all the time. If at all possible try to get it rolling in reverse with clutch depressed. Once you have some forward room, put it in four low and see if you can get it rolling forward and up to a bit of speed. While at speed back to FWD and then let the clutch out again. Hopefully you can now get it out of 4th and back to normal. If so, start thinking about a newer transmission. Best bet is to do a 5 speed d/r conversion. Best modification ever done to my '84 Brat.
