recently completed my 2.2l swap into my 97 OBW. it has a hydraulic clutch. i replaced clutch disk, pressure plate, release and pilot bearings. i also had the flywheel turned. after completion, i have a chatter starting off in first gear. shifts fine all other gears. kind of pissing me off and wondering why. was hoping it just needed to wear in, but after several hundred miles, still doing it. it never chattered before the replacement, but was VERY tight compared to now. its like butter now. any ideas/suggestions are appreciated. oh and BTW it was a complete clutch kit bought off ebay, supposedly an eaton brand kit.

its probably the clutch kit. the cheap ones they sell at autozone and advanced auto are junk. I've had the same thing happen. New clutch horrible chatter. It has to do with the springs in the clutch disk.

Where brand is a good replacement clutch... I think I have the same problem:-\ And I bet a set from the dealer wouldnt be very cheap.

I bought a Valeo kit off Ebay (the cheapest kit I found on Ebay, $109 shipped.) and it is working perfectly thus far.

 

Are you sure the "chatter" isn't due to a worn carrier bearing/bushing, or U-joint?

 

edit: BTW Valeo and Daikin (Exedy) make OEM clutches for Subaru.

Where brand is a good replacement clutch... I think I have the same problem:-\ And I bet a set from the dealer wouldnt be very cheap.

 

the way Subaru parts work you have to order each piece seperate anyhow, so just get a Subaru Friction disc and slap it in with your existing pressure plate and throwout.

As I've posted before get a Valeo kit off Ebay and pay a few more bucks for all USA and Japanese parts rather tan the cheapest.

didnt see that one when i searched... my kit off ebay was an exedy clutch (supposedly) and was 145 shipped.. i may just deal for now, as i really dont want to take the whole thing apart again. is it possible thou, that the people who turned the flywheel f---ed it up?? it seemed good, but you cant really tell by looking. what a PITA really. guess i shouldve known better and gotten one from somewhere local that i could have it warranteed. they all wanted 225+ for kits at local auto parts stores.

Yeah, I figured it would be kind a shady. The PP said Valeo on it, but the disc had nothing, the bearings that came with it said made in japan, but it looked like it was just kinda thrown together. From a few parts bins.

 

Did you happen to look at the disc and see it it had any markings on it? A real Exedy disc would have the Daikin logo stamped or inked on it somewhere.

 

Another thought... You did install the disc facing the correct direction right? The springs/hub should be towards the transmission.

Could be transmission shaft...the part the throw out bearing slides back and forth on. Its aluminum, and wears down, the slop between it and the bearing causes chatter. They make a kit...an oversize throwout bearing that comes with a metal sleeve that you put over the aluminum shaft/tube.
