2010 MY: Gas Smell in Cabin

Featured Replies

I haven't seen any posts about this yet, so I'll ask it.

The company I work for has several new 2010 Outbacks, Legacys, and Imprezas in our fleet right now. I've noticed that many of them have a distinct gasoline smell to them..very noticeable. With the first one, I'd figured that there was some spillage during refueling. But in the last week or so, I've noticed the same smell in about a half dozen more of our new Subarus (2010 MY only). All these cars have less than 2000 miles on them, some less than 200 miles.

I've left them to "air out" overnight with the windows down about an inch or two (it's been snowing here), and in the morning the odor is mostly diminished, but when driven again with the windows closed and the heat on, it starts to really reek again inside.

We've got one of the Legs at the dealer right now, and they've not been able to locate the problem since leaving it with them on Thursday (Feb 18).

I just find this very unusual, as we've had hundreds of Subarus, all models, just during the time I've worked there, without any sort of issues (unlike those awful GM's, and more recently Toyotas and Hondas).

I guess what I'm asking is, have any 2010 owners here experienced this?

TIA

exhaust gas smell, or unburned fuel smell?

Unburned, raw fuel smell.

While you Find the Answer & Fix it, I Kindly Suggest to Avoid to Smoke a Cigarrete inside!

I Had that issue in my Old EA82 Wagon when I Swapped the Stock Hitachi Carb with a Weber Carb and mistakenly cap closed the Gas Tank's Vent Line... I Just re Opened it an the Problem has Gone Forever.

I Hope that Idea can Help: Maybe it has Mistakenly bad Plugged Vacuum hoses somewhere; I Suggest to take 'em to the Dealer... it Could be Dangerous.

Kind Regards.

Yes, thank you..I'll relay that suggestion to the dealer, where the car still sits.

Matter of fact, maybe I'd better call to check on that car. We've been so busy that I think it's been forgotten.

OK.. a morsel of info:

The techs have acknowledged there is something wrong, some sort of fuel leak.

Preliminary guess by them is a small leak on top of the fuel tank.

They are in the process of dismantling, and will identify/confirm/ hopefully repair.

I'll post with the results when they're finished and we have our car back in service.

OK, got the Leg back today.

Turned out that the small leak was above the fuel tank. One of the evap hoses was very loose, barely making contact to where it connects to the gas tank.

The tank had to be lowered from the car to do the repair. The tech took our Leg home overnight (about 20 miles away from dlr.) after that to confirm and verify that the issue was solved.

Many thanks to Michael Hohl (Honda/)Subaru for such great and courteous service!
