98 Forester parts into 95 Legacy

Featured Replies

I coworker has a 98 Forester that just kicked the bucket - head gasket and/or cracked engine. I can buy it from him for just a couple hundred bucks. I'm not so much interested in fixing the car at this point - I just want the leather seats and the wheels (he just got new tires). Will I be able to use these on my 95 Legacy L wagon? I have the stock 185/70/14 tires now, and I'm pretty sure he has 215/60/16. I searched some threads about the seats and it sounds like they will work, but I wasn't sure if anyone could confirm it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

he wheels will bolt on but the tires are too big. swap in outback struts and they will fit.

would the forester struts make them fit?

Yes, but the front end will sit higher than the rear- impreza/forester has different rear strut-mount height - see my POST. You can use 'saggy butt spacers' to even it out a bit.

If the Forester is the S model (likely w/leather seats), the tires are 215/60R-16 - I have an S in my shop right now.

I know the seats will fit, just can't confirm how much higher they are. If they have seat height adjustment you should be OK.

P.s. If you part out the Forester, please let me know...may be a few items I could use, if it's the gray interior.

I know this sounds like a stupid questions, but what sort of things would happen - i.e. would they just rub during u-turns, rub when going over bumps, etc?

Not stupid...gotta learn somehow....a Search would tell you that the tires will likely rub on the strut's spring perches, so although the wheels fit the hubs, the tires won't physically fit.

The Outback/Forester struts have higher perches, plus they're taller to provide lift (along w/body spacers, etc.).

They also may rub as you described.

just to let you know if your 95 is an automatic the entire engine will drop right into the forester (either manual or auto). it happens to be the perfect plug and play engine swap. bolts right up, plugs right in.

DOH! Yes, it will (if it's an AT w/the EGR)...good catch, MR. G.

All the 98 foresters I have seen had 205 70 15 tires. They do fit on a standard legacy, but it is VERY close to both the upper rear spring perch and the front of the wheel well.

The seats fit. The struts fit. If you swap struts into the legacy, use the trailing arm brackets off the forester, they center the rear wheel in the wheelwell.

But putting the legacy engine in the forester is a good idea as well.

Im glad someone posted the engine from legacy>forester. This would be the easiest path. But I know the forester look is not for everyone. Im into the look of legacys but several of my friends and girlfriend are into the Foresters. So no pressure her to cross over. Its fun the figure out what all will work on what....party on garth.
