August 8, 201015 yr So I have noticed that some 2.2 have adjustable lifters and some have hydraulic. Does anyone have a preference on which they think is better. When I messed with VWs the buses had hydraulic lifters which were nice and quiet but I used to run into problems with them freezing up and holding valves open or freezing up and making the worst valve tap ever. I have run into the freezing up and making loud noises with the 2.2 hydraulics Thanks, Craig
August 8, 201015 yr Up through around '96 they had the HLA's, then they went to solid lifters. The HLA's are nice because they never need valve clearance adjustment, but sometimes the HLA's get noisy if they get to the point where they can't hold prime. Subaru switched for fuel economy reasons - the solid lifters are a little more efficient than the HLA's.
October 25, 201015 yr can you swap the hla set up for the solid, they bolt right up but could it make the engine misfire?
October 25, 201015 yr You can swap them, yes. I prefer the manual lifters personally. They are easy to adjust. GD
