looking at a legacy today with blown timing belt

Featured Replies

he wants 200 bucks, says the lower idler locked up and flung the belt off, will the engine still turn over with out the belt on? i know it wont start. It is the 2.2 awd, 180 k miles. Any thing else i should look for?

Start with the year so you know if it's interference or not.

Typically when those TB's break nothing else gets hurt.

Probably TB, idlers, WP, some seals and some labor and you're ready.

the problem here is that since it will not run, you are taking his word for it that everything else is ok. it could have bad head gaskets, trans, axles, wheel bearings, etc.

as far as the engine goes, it probably will be good, most of them are. but you just do not know

for 200 bucks, put on a timing belt and go. no one drives on a bad head gasket waiting for the timing belt to let go.

while you are in there, do the water pump and engine seals.

but to just get it going, you will be fine just doing the belt and hitting the road.

If the fellow is correct about the lower idler seizing up, replace that too before hitting the road. I agree that it would be smart to do the water pump while you're in there. Seals if the general condition of the car warrants the extra cost in parts and labor.

$200 for '90 Legacy with 180K doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. With a little luck, it should be good for another 100K. If the general condition and appearance is good, this should be a great deal.

That's a good deal assuming the body and interior aren't totally hammered. You can definitely fix that for cheap with a $125 kit off ebay and be good for another 60k.

Do it.
