99 Legacy motor swap 2.2 to a 2.5

Re: 99 subaru legacy clutch replacment also motor swap 2.2 to 2.5

Ok thanks again guys for the help

I guess I need to start a new post

Another question I have is this:

The Legacy is my brothers and we are both going to do the work on it at my garage at my place. So we need to know if there is any of you that might have swapped a 2.2 over to a 2.5 japan He has a fresh 2.5 out of another subaru

What we needed to know is if this will work without a major investment in mods.

Thanks again guys

I forgot to mention that I have a car lift and a engine hoist to use. With all the tool I need. What I dont know is the difference betweent these two motors

2.2 over to a 2.5

question mark

Well I will ask, since most everyone will want to know.... why are you considering this?

That phase II 2.2 is a better motor, and the 2.5 is not a lot more powerful,.

Well Im not sure why.

I think the other motor has less mileage on it.

I have to tell you I know little about subarus. But I will soon. :)

I will have to ask him about the exact reason for the swap. the car looks to be in great shape except for a spent clutch.

and any 2.5L 96 - 99 or 00 - 02 maybe 03 has the likelyhood of bad head gaskets. if you plan on installing one, the only garantee you have of not going back and doing the HGs is if you do them before you install it.

Ok good to know. it sounds like you wouldn't change the motors if it was up to you.

a used ej22 is more sure than a used ej25.

the ej25 would have to be pretty cheap fore me to swap it in for an ej22, and the ej22 known to be bad.

if you want to do the swap you need to know if their Phase I or Phase II engines. A few things changed right around 99 and both Phase I and Phase II Ej25's happened to be available that year. You would first verify what EJ22 you currently have since that's the change over year just to be sure. the swap is easy either way if you have the right Phase engine. have the wrong phase and it won't work, electronics and mechanicals being different, etc.

but i'd keep the EJ22. the EJ22 is more reliable. if you need proof then type in EJ25 headgasket, EJ25 piston slap, EJ25 bearing failure in google or here and read of those issues all day long.

It's not actually a bad motor - but in Subaru terms it's a downgrade in reliability and not much power gain. and those "JDM" Ej25's are more novelty than anything else, tell him to just stop drooling over it, it's just an engine. lol.

Even an EJ25 is still a slow car, it's not like it's got mad power and pulls great track times, it's still slow in those terms. It is a nice bump in power if you're towing or do a lot of mountain driving though but hardly worth all the effort in my opinion. but i'm admittedly odd and abnormal in car terms.

My vote would also be to keep the 2.2L

If you want to put in a 2.5L might as well go this route link
