1.6/1.8 Engines

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a 80-89 Subie and have a couple questions.

How do I tell if it has a 1.6 or a 1.8 engine?

Also, were all the 4WD cars during those years Dual Range?

Thanks.

if you are looking at the engine there will be a little number on the front of the left (us passenger) side of the block. if it says ea81 or ea 82 its a 1.8 liter

iirc ea71 is the 1.6

also try searching engine identification, the search function rocks

True with the ea71 or ea81 markings just by the alternator.

There are 2 versions of the ea71. earlier ones are physically smaller than an ea81 case. Theis is the one with the starter on the very top of the bellhousing.

any ea71 with a side mounted starter are compatible with ea81 engines(manifolds, exhausts) and transmission bellhousung

If it's an '82 or newer the only one's that came with the EA71 in the US are the "STD" model hatchbacks. Everything else made after '81 was an EA81 or EA82 by default.

To the left of the distributor on the block is printed the "EA71" or "EA81" indentification.

Are you sure? I thought that all EA71 manifolds were an inch short to fit to an EA81.

Thanks for the info so far. What about the dual range? Is it in ALL the 4WD cars between 80-89 or was it an option?

D/R was in all 4WD, non-turbo, manual transmission GL's from 81 to 89. DL's were single range and '85 to '89 GL turbo's were also single range.

not all transmissions were dual range. in addition to GD's list:

XT's and Loyale's don't have dual range.

RX's were all dual range.

curious - why 1980-1989? not 1979? not 1990?

I'm assuming he wants a D/R tranny - which would only be from '81 to '89 actually. '79 is a whole different body style and '90 would be a Loyale which didn't come with D/R..... but I'm sure *you* know that already :).

Yeah....sorry....I should have said 81-89. My mistake. Yes, I want 4WD, DR. So...I guess I want an EA81 81-89 GL non-turbo stick. I have been struggling with what had what and what years. I think I have it now thanks to you guys.:)
