November 4, 201015 yr My 82 Brat has a towbar and spent a good part of its life being pulled around behind an RV. The front left axle is starting to click, sounds like it wants to be replaced. I'm going to be moving across the country soon and I want to tow the Brat behind the rental truck, but I'd like to avoid paying to use a dolly when I've got a wonderful tow bar. Would flat towing in neutral on the manual transmission destroy the already damaged axle? I plan on replacing it when I get settled in at the new place, but I'd like to flat tow it without worry of the old one breaking loose and causing damage.

It could come apart whenever it feels like it... I would spend the 50 bucks for insurance
November 4, 201015 yr replacing the axle would cost alot less than renting a tow dolly... regardless, towing a brat in neutral is not really putting a lot of stress on any axles but you dont want it grenading on you going down the road at 70mph.
November 4, 201015 yr Unlikely that a clicking axle will blow apart unless it's under power. Probably be just fine. GD
November 4, 201015 yr I'm with GD on that, but a front axle from pull a part will likely cost less than the tow dolly rental.
November 4, 201015 yr Author I was thinking it should be okay without power being applied to it. I think I'll order an axle and if I can get it changed out before I go, that would be fine too. I hear good things about EMPI axles. Partsgeek seems to be out at the moment (I called) any other good places to get them?
