This is what happens when an idiot uses something other than a right punch to remove the pin. It gets stuck and you have a nightmare to deal with.

Been down the road before man and yes, it does suck. Find your local Mac Tools dealer and get the Subaru axle pin tool (can't remember the PN for the life of me). Last one I bought was under $20 including tax but that was a couple years ago. Its also warrantied for life!

+ 1 to that. I have three of them and they are life savers. I had to drill some out once, it was awful.

No I have the pin driver. I bought this D/R 5 speed for my Brat upgrade. That is how I got the tranny and man what a pain in the rear..... But I thought the guys would like the pics though. :slobber:

Sorry if this if off topic but speaking of Nightmare has anyone else had fun with Escort/Mazda driver side axles? I have had to rebuild a couple in the car because they were stuck in so tight, and they are c-clip style:rolleyes:

Yup, and Volvo XC70s sieze into the transmission, Honda Passports I rebuild in the truck because you have to remove the front diff and pull it apart to get them out.

if (like me) you have parts scattered around everywhere, a perfect tool for getting those roll pins out is one of the starter bolts. the super long ones that hold the case together...

 

they work perfectly. never had any problems and they are plenty long enough to get the pins out.

Agreed, however the last couple off topic posts (my fault :eek:) referred to the simple c-clip style somehow getting stuck in the trans. I have a 6 foot pry bar that fell off of the back of a cement truck in front of my work that I custom ground the end on, air hammer with several custom made ends, BFH, ect. I have all but cracked a couple cases trying to get the first couple out. Now I just either rebuild them in the car or send them down the road to the local trans shop - he hasn't called and cussed me out yet:grin:

Well you can see from the pics I got the axle off but I just got the rest of the pin out the other day. Someone had taken a solid axle pin and thought they could drive out a hollow pin. But the solid pin drove into the hollow one. It was a nightmare. I sure hope I don't have to do that again.:banghead:

I had the same problem with my rear diff the first time I took it out. This is how I did it - I was able to re-use the drive shaft, its still in the subi now :D

^ removed the diff for a welded unit. Point and shoot offroading from then on! This is an old pic trying to show what I had done. The grey lines are the wire that was used to hold the CV in place - cable ties work well too ;)

 

I used an angle grinder to grind the pin down to the stub axle so I could get the CV shaft off. After this was achieved I then smashed the remaining roll pin out of the stub axle until I had it all clear again. Worked a treat and I would do it again if needed.
